It’s 50 years since the Kent State Massacre

It’s been fifty years today.

 

On Monday, May 4, 1970 at 12:24 PM Ohio National Guardsmen opened fire on unarmed students, killing two protesters and two innocent bystanders and wounding nine.

I was not there although I grew up outside of Kent.  I was at school in Cleveland at a protest rally.  When I went home to my dorm I heard about the shooting.  I then heard about a group sitting in the street on a main road that ran thru campus.  I joined them.  I was one of the students that sat until the mounted police charged. You never know how scary that is until you have them chase you even up the sidewalk.  Had to dive up a retaining wall to get away.

That summer I worked in a gas station across the road from the campus.  All summer the jeeps with guardsmen would drive past.
