Errex
I remember hearing or reading about a saw that was, basically a lenght of wire that had inset a series of teeth made from either diamond or another suitable hard material. The closes description that comes to mind is that it'd look a bit like barbed wire, with regular shaped barbs. Thing is, I've asked for it at hardware stores, some jeweler's shops and apparently nobody has even heard of it. I was wondering if somebody here can confirm the thing even exists and, if possible, Where could it be found?
Moderator Froggy the Great Posted July 29, 2004 Moderator Share Posted July 29, 2004 I've seen this sort of thing, but it was a jeweler's saw blade made specifically for cutting the rough shape of a wax master, for lost-wax ringmaking,
Rodnik
Well...it depends on what you are trying to cut...but yes, they do make one. I own one for use with PVC pipe. It's basically a wire garotte that one would use to get into tough places. It's called a "PVC Wire Saw". Most of the guy at home depot have no idea what it is...so you'll probably have to look for it. But then again, this one may not work with your application. There are SEVERAL diamond wire saws available from hilti, etc....all are power tools used for concrete and such... Now...they have a NATO commando wire saw that can be purchased for 9 bucks here: http://www.bestglide.com/Wire_Saw_Info.html Again..if that suits your needs. Hope that helps...I'll see if I can find somethin else. ebay: http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewI...&category=20768 http://www.covington-engineering.com/wire_saws.htm
Errex
Great, Thanks, Kev. I was beginning to think I had invented all that. I want it for cutting minis, of course. I think the finer wire saws should do a better job than normal hobby/jewelry ones. Now that I know what it's called, I have a pretty good idea where to search for it. Enchantra
No you are not dreaming. I have seen this too. I have seen jewelers saws like this.
eastman
I have seen wire saws done as Jeweler's Saw / Coping saw type frame saws. They have the advantage of being able to change the cutting direction without turning the blade.
thrush65
The blades that resemble barbed wire sound like Spiral Wax saw blades as Frosch mentioned. My Rio Grande jewelers supply catalog also has Diamond Hand saw blades the smallest being .o425" and 140 grit. For cutting minis I prefer Laser Gold Jeweler's saw blades from Rio Grande.
