I almost stood on this lovely Common Hawker sunning himself on the path, so I channeled my inner Disney Princess and helped him find a safer place to warm up. Apologies for my pasty white hand- I just don't tan at all, even after being out pretty much everyday.

I don't know why, but this had me ROFLing. Maybe it's just too early in the morning.

The question is, which Disney Princess was it? Most would have sang to it, but Merida might have put an arrow into him...

Probably Belle, she's pretty good at making friends with vicious beasts :poke:

Edit: it's hilarious to see people do a double take when you're walking along with a dragonfly on your hand :)

Depends on the era. The first USS Texas was 140 feet shorter. HIJMS Mikasa is 20 feet shorter. HMS Brittania (1904) was 3 feet 9 inches longer.

Fun fact: It's just Mikasa. The Japanese don't use a prefix before their ship names. Neither do the French or Russians, among many others. A lot of the time when you see them, they're unofficial prefixes by folks who are used to talking about British or American ships. NATO also likes to add superflous prefixes, I'm guessing because their paper forms were first made by same Brits and Yanks, and you just GOTTA out something in the blank or it's Not Filled Out Properly.

I got a really weird message from one of my cousins this morning. He just like messaged me like we had just talked. We haven't talked in 2.5ish years going by the time stamp on our last FB message. He mentioned that he appreciated the Xmas card but I haven't sent one out in 2 or 3 years now. He also mentioned my Sibling which that whole bit is another can of worms I won't get into on here.

We're not even friends on FB anymore. We have/had some very radically different ideas on politics that I found inexcusable so I quietly unfriended him probably about the time of our last messages. I'm not sure if I even should respond. I'm very confused.

@Kuroneko It was sent this morning like right before I got up, so about 5:30 am here.

That's....odd.

Personally, I'd be inclined to ignore it. I've got questionable members of my extended family who occasionally try to play nice with me, but it's always because they want something(money, a guarantee, place to stay etc). I ran out of patience a long time ago and find that not responding is usually the best option since they can't figure out what "no' means <_<

Yeah, it really is. I'll talk it over with my therapist. I asked his sister-in-law if he was okay and apparently he's cut like everyone off so no one is really sure.

If he's cut everyone off and is feeling it now, then this may be an attempt on his part to reach out to family members he feels will be less threatening to his self esteem (whether he's making that decision consciously or not).

That doesn't mean that it's good for you, though.

The cats are all up in my business today. One just wants all the loves, one wants to play (and knock things over), and the other is insisting that he be allowed in the unfinished storage part of the basement (he's not, we'd never see him again). I am unpacking, so all the new smells and things moving around.

And empty boxes

I have seen it both ways. Online and in print. Particularly, specifically, and most often with regard to the IJN.

I’ve decided it is a quibble over how to translate from Japanese.

“...prefixes by folks who are used to” [writing in English] “about British or American ships” [for an English speaking audience].

Adding the prefix serves a purpose or three: it confirms to the reader that the name is the name of a warship, it lets the reader know it is from the period when the Imperial Japanese Navy was a going concern, and as you mention, it’s a matter of completeness.

It is a choice to conform to the normal practice of the new language (English) rather than not only bringIng in a foreign word (from Japanese) but also bring in usage habits from the original language.

I don’t remember if Mikasa is also a Japanese prefecture like Yamato.

***wanders off to watch Anne and look that up***

X-mas card?

It's August!

Most important thing, you decided to unfriend him for a reason.

Ask yourself if you're regretting that decision and miss him or if you were at peace with it.

Follow your heart and instinct here.
