Love the pictures, @Kuroneko. Thanks for sharing, brigtened my day.

Thank you! Seeing him was the highlight of an otherwise uneventfully windy, rainy two hour walk so I'm glad I could share.

Coincidentally, we were watching a documentary on wildlife in cities last night and it featured some very accommodating otters from Singapore. So cute!

First day back at school for my little munchkins.  Masks, COVID questions at the door and we haven't been called to go get them yet, so here's hoping day 1 goes ok.  :upside:  My wife refuses to bet with me on how many weeks it will be until they close the school again...  (I'm betting 5)  After having had them home for so long though, I miss them though.  My daughter liked to bomb my work meetings which was cute and my son would do drive by hugs when I wasn't on calls.

Time for more coffee and more meetings now...

Aspects of academia are somehow worse than government work. My instructor ID was supposed to come with building access so I could get into the building after hours to teach my after hours class instead of going through full security every time. Supposed to...

HR told me to go to the ID office. The ID office told me to bug my dept head. I expect the dept head will punt me to the professor who hired me or to HR. I happened to talk to building security while they were on break and this is apparently a common problem this term so far.

Government works better than this.

Hopefully, since you've spoken with security, they'll be understanding about it and make it as painless as possible. I also suggest bringing them snacks or drinks (if they're able to accept it). If there's further issues, it'll help on that end.

I'm helping! ::):

Little surprised I haven't heard from some of those already tbh. I am on some unfortunate lists.

Got one of those "a warrant has been issued in your name!" or whatever calls the other day. Went out of my way to stay on the line and broccoli around with the asshat on that one.

Ugghh.  Just got asked if I would go to the Amarillo TX area in a couple of weeks.

The manufacturer I contract with makes some non-car wash stuff for another manufacturer that sells systems mostly to cities. That stuff is usually installed and maintained by their techs, but their installer is Canadian and can't cross the border now, so he can't do the install job.  He's been pushing it off as long as he can, but their customer in TX is getting antsy about getting it installed soon.  So I was suggested as an alternative.

Something about 2 weeks quarantine each way when crossing the border has discouraged a lot of us. I need to go 30 miles from home for some things all year but haven't yet. Probably will soon if I can skip the US side quarantine. Life at home is basically self quarantine for me anyhow. I'm personally not particularly worried about the virus and I haven't heard anything about the tiny towns I go to having any cases. But then the canadian towns I live next too are supposed to have a bunch of cases and nobody knows any of the people who've tested positive.

So, I’m sitting at my desk, getting ready to paint. There’s a window with an AC unit right in front of me. I’m all happy and cheerful, until I start smelling smoke. Like, tons of it. I look outside and it’s suddenly very hazy and brown, where a few minutes ago it was clear and sunny.

Turns out there’s a pretty big fire north of here on the Montana border.

My lungs do not care for this situation at all.

Every fall we usually get heavy smoke from somewhere in the mountains. Yesterday was the first time so far that we've smelt it here. Probably not the fire you mentioned because you're straight south of me and it's rare the winds come from that way. Don't enjoy the dust and smoke of fall much.

This has been an exceptionally good week for me. First, Charlie Brown happens (I already posted about that), and now the Mario remakes rumor is confirmed...

Makes me think of this:

But with me rolling a twenty instead.

Oooof...

I think government work has instilled in me a discipline and empathy these students have never experienced or heard of before.

Some TA never showed up for his section so the professor handed an entire class the access codes to my zoom lesson. So I've got a double session of like 40 people that I'm lecturing to and answering questions for and at the end of it not only do I have all of the other section wanting to join my class permanently but they'll be crashing my office hours. I'm not getting mad at people for asking the same question three times, I'm not insulting anyone, I'm explaining concepts, I'm telling stories (it's the safety lecture you are legally required to tell 'cool scar' stories), I'm directing people to better sources when I don't know a thing, I'm doing everything a teacher should be doing. I've got students thanking me and praising me and begging to join my class and...

So now I'm unsure if the professor will be mad that I'm making his grad students look bad or if I'm going to be teaching 40 person classes from now on.

I needn't have worried. Crippling impostor syndrome strikes again ::P:

One of last night's class-crashers was in the office hours today with myself, her normal TA, and the professor. Student made the plea to switch sections, saying in front of her own TA "and [Neb] actually taught us"

First, no nobody is being transferred to my class and that's fine. I'm already teaching a 28 person section when it's supposed to be 10 students max. Second, the professor waited for everyone else to leave and then begged me to stay on next term  Not sure the IRS would allow it given filing season and all but I think I'll have the opportunity to teach all of the Fall Semesters I want from now on.

Sometime, yes when are are having a bad time, but we are a family here. Yes be polite to everyone, but if you are having a good week day hour minute, we want to hear that too. It is not your fault, if we are having a bad one and sometimes (for me) seeing a family member having a good day helps me. Now I know did not suffer as bad as others, so this is just MY OPINION. I may call you bad names..., But please feel free to share.
