Randomness XVII: The Madness of the Quorum

Recommended Posts

Well. Crap. Rain skipped us over.

At this point, my window unit has been taped within an inch of it's life (all the gaps around it that I can get to have been taped shut and, in a few places, gap-filled with rolled shop rags). Thanks, @pcktlnt for the suggestion.

Might not work for the exterior doors, but I'll come up with something. *mutter*

I have seal strips.. if I have to, I'mma tape plastic to the exterior door frames and install the dratted things.

This sounds like something I need to consider.  my sinuses are like little nurseries for bacteria these days, at least that's what it feels like. Ho do you get it to dissolve into the saline solution?  all the ointments I have are oil based, not water based and I don't know how I feel about a slug of petroleum jelly getting lodged in my sinuses.

1.  Warm the water first

2.  Use a small amount of ointment

3.  Shake vigorously.

You'll only get a suspension not a solution, but it works well enough.  And I'm grateful that my days of never-ending sinus infections are behind me, it's been years worth of allergy shots, sinus surgery, etc, but it's been a good couple of years since I needed antibiotics and I'm honestly thrilled.

So, I got an albuterol inhaler and I feel sooooo much better! On the other hand, I’m coughing a ton so I also hurt more, but hey, I can breath!

And all sorts of happy blessings and fortunes to the folks at the pharmacy who found a coupon for me, lowering the price from $82 to $18. Crying at the pharmacy counter is really embarrassing.

I'm so glad you're getting better!  Probably the combo of smoke and pneumonia was Bad News.  And yeah, times were rough when we had our first, and the cost of medication for both mom and kid was stressful.  So you have my sincerest sympathies, and I hope you guys have better times coming soon.

Should. All the good ones are.

My “home office” for the last six (!) months has been the kitchen counter. I have a barstool and a laptop. I have yet to sit down and have both aligned from where I arose. Both are heavy enough not to be affected by gravity as I move about the room.

I suspect Strawberry Shortcake and her criminal gang of fiends is behind this.

One thing I will never understand about doing service/phone support.

How do the calls always manage to come in surges?

First two hours of the day, it was dead.  Zero calls, so I could catch up on other things. Then in a span of 15 minutes, I get a dozen emails and another half dozen calls.

OK, not really - it was only 4 emails and 1 call.  But sheesh, when it goes from 0 to 5 in less than 15 minutes, it makes me wonder if my customers are all conspiring against me.

Since it's slightly on topic, I'll say this:

"Any GM/DM worth their salt has an internet browsing/search history that could be made to look very suspicious by law enforcement."

Especially if they hang out here.

Don't forget writers.

Worked on session reports tonight, and a blog post about ReaperCon. It's nice to get in a little writing, though I really hate blogger's new interface. It tries to be so helpful. It fails... Really should think about hosting it myself, but... effort. Also managed to miss it's 11 year blogiversary.

Yeah... I keep trying to switch it back and Blogger "helpfully" changes it back. I'm seriously thinking of finding another place to host or something. I don't really have a following so it doesn't matter.

For the second time in a month, I’ve been cursed at under a stranger’s breath.

First time I didn’t buy a guy anything to eat or drink at a gas station while filling up when he asked. “Sorry, can’t help you today”.  Had to walk in to get a receipt and heard MF as I passed him as he was waiting for the other guy who agreed to get him a drink. Maybe he was talking to the suitcase he was struggling with. Maybe it was a directed insult.

Then today was a home improvement salesman who I told I wasn’t interested twice but still insisted I make an appointment for a free estimate when I was available. So told him, “sorry, but I’m really not interested“ and closed the door. Windows are open, so “GD don't just close the door” came through pretty clearly.

I don’t think I’m being a jerk in all this.

Maybe carrying a rusty and bloody sword might help. But, I don’t think I can do the whole “crazed lunatic so let’s be polite when told no” look.

You are not a jerk. People who can't take no for an answer are jerks.

I do the ordering for the kitchen I work in and it has been an adventure this year. I still have jerks that come up to me saying "We're out of this. I need it." And then do not take 'sorry, nothing I can do.' for an answer. And, no, I cannot drop what I am doing and run to the store for you. One, I'm busy. Two, corporate really frowns on circumventing their systems (even when they don't work), if there is even money available on the card (end of the month, there isn't). I can't just pull stuff out of my back pocket. I have made sure we have something to serve for every meal so far. I'm pretty proud of that, actually.

At least my boss appreciates it.

I wish I had some Greek ones, to celebrate the 2,500th anniversary of Salamis, but I'm having to make to with Roman, geared mostly toward the Republic era. They're paper ships from Roman Seas, and I'm printing them out at 1/600.

Yeah, between the eternal choice of money for ships vs time for ships, I had to choose money. Because my wife is much happier when I can also buy her things like food and dice.
