Serious question: for those of you with spouses/kids that don't share your hobby interests, how do you manage to hobby without anyone feeling ignored (or the chores left undone)?

Good question. My husband hobbies more than I do. It's his zen time. I enjoy it, but don't make time for it as religiously. And, truth be told, even though I understand I do often feel ignored. I try to get over it, though, because I know it's his happy time and he needs it.

Less often than I would like, honestly. But we try to arrange times when she plans to do stuff while I get to hobby.
Assembly and even airbrushing I often do after she goes to bed (I normally am up a couple hours after her), but I struggle to paint that late in the evening (my eyes get tired and my shoulder gets shaky).
And she'll hobby with me on occasion, even though its not really her thing.

Can't comment on the kids aspect of that. But I encourage my wife to develop her own hobbies. Then, if one of us feels the desire to go do some hobbying, the other one has something they enjoy that they can do on their own. My wife spends about as much time practicing her piano or ukelele as I do painting.

The chores aren't really an issue. My hobby time usually doesn't begin unless I'm satisfied with the amount of chores I've done for the day.

And yet, the aggregate death toll for the year in the USA is down from the average of the tally from previous years.

It's down by close to 100,00 people according to the people who keep track of these matters.

A bit of a data nerd here. Curious as to your source for that number?

GEM never said, that I remember. I found this:

I don't recommend trying to look at usafacts.org (the source) as the page is a Kludge-Fest for which the designer/webmaster should be soundly punished in some cruel, unusual, and corporeal fashion.

I was under the impression that, in the US at least, 2020 was on track for an increase in the number of deaths even if we discount the extra mortality due to Covid. The last time I read a paper on this it was looking like excess deaths (that is, the number of actual deaths above the estimated expected deaths averaged based on prior years) in the US was around 16,000 people. Once again, that does not count Covid mortality.  Of course these studies have limitations in how accurate they can be, but that seems like a very major discrepancy and I'm interested to see why that is.

I know that all seems pretty morbid. But for a while in grad school I taught an undergrad course on population stats and I've had a passing interest in it ever since. Hence the curiosity.

Two different articles online, both quoting data from the CDC.

I always ask if it's okay that I want to paint.

It always is.

My girl will bake/ make a puzzle/do things she likes to.

There are chores for me and there are chores for her.

Doesn't matter what the other is doing at that time.

I got Molly back from the animal hospital! I want to say she was happy to see me, and that it was the painkillers that kept her tail from wagging at me, but she definitely did not wag her tail or look enthusiastic. She's made at me for leaving her yesterday. And will probably continue to be so for the next two weeks, as she can't do any form of running, jumping, getting on furniture otherwise she might pop one of the internal sutures. Now I have to keep a very active, very strong labrador calm and practicing restraint... I think I can already feel another hernia coming...

Poor baby didn't eat for them at the hospital, I had feared she would not take food from strangers (which is a good thing, right?), so she was very hungry when she got home. Resting comfortably. Dixie got her labwork and imaging done too, so she is set for her eval next week.

Right now "hobbying" is problematic as all of my energies are going towards organizing both the move and details for the new property.

When we do finally get moved we will have one room that will be mostly for crafty type hobby stuff for both of us.  I'm trying to figure how it can be arranged to have two tvs that can be tuned to two different program sources so she can watch her preferred programs and I mine.  I don't mid most of what she watches but she gets bored very quickly by the Nat Geo/ History Channel type programing that I like.  We'll be able to do whatever crafty projects we are currently interested in more or less together.

Painting Platinum! #042 -- started at 3:03 PM.  Sadie is painting 03001 Phoenix.

They are giving away Phthalo Blue, Phthalo Green, Clear Orange, and a bonus paint, one set for each five subs.

In your instance: when you are having hobby time that should be his get his chores done time (no idea how the two of you have chores divided) or your hobby time could be his naptime or his catch up on professional reading time.  When he is doing his fun thing that you think is —meh— that is when you do the her chores, organize the fridge, clean all the cleanable things…

But it needs to cut both ways and be close to even.

Better still: your hobby time could be his RPG prep time of all the secret things you can't see until your play in his next campaign. You paint; he draws new dungeons.

Good that she's back!

She will forgive you, dogs always do.

Give her some treats she's fond of, good luck with keeping her calm!

Parallel play is an option. It lets you two do your own things while being in the same room together. My wife and I used to always do separate things together.

Interesting (well, not really). I'm typically using stats data from the National Center for Health Statistics at work, which is under the umbrella of the CDC. I wonder what the reason is for the difference between numbers within the same agency is? May have to look through some of the stats being published to see why next time I'm bored and thinking about math. Thanks.
