Out running errands this afternoon I heard that IKEA, instead of having a Black Friday Sale is doing the complete opposite.  They will buy back their old assembled furniture in resell-able condition for a percentage of what it cost and issue a voucher that may be used to purchase new IKEA furniture.  I figure most of us have some of their stuff and might be interested in the exchange.  Sort of a twist on the "new lamps for old" racket.

Getting ready to mix up some hobbies. Here's a homebrewed barleywine. This rather timid looking beer is supposed to be an English style barleywine but after discussion with some guys in my club it ended up being sort of an American style instead with belgian yeast that topped put at 13.5% alcohol. For reference, 11 ounces of this equals about three 12 oz cans of miller lite. I was assured by everyone in the discussion that I couldn't hope to get more than 11% out of my little stovetop system. So I made this to prove them wrong. I had to double mash (imagine making a cup of tea, removing the bag, then heating that cup of tea back up and adding another bag), and about two weeks into fermentation I had to remove it from the yeast and then add a really high gravity Belgian strain of yeast to it. It tastes just like a big barleywine but with just enough fruity esters coming from the second round of yeast to hide the alcohol. I've got a five gallon keg of it and I'm looking forward to the weekend when I'm brewing in a competition against other club members at a local brewery. I'm bringing a few gallons and am going to prove some folks wrong. Cheers all.

Quite the opposite, I've been trying to buy two of their "Lack" side tables (The large square ones) for about two months but they aren't shipping and the two closest stores to me are in Virginia Beach and Charlotte.  Both are about four hours away and requiring you to order online and schedule a time to pickup as far as I have been able to ascertain.  I can't waste a full day to spend $20-30, much less the money I'd have to spend on gas to drive that far in a vehicle that gets about 20 mpg.

@TheAuldGrump I would ask some harsh questions before I attended that interview!

One can't be too careful!

Questions that NEED an answer

  • How much cheese are we talking about exactly?
  • Are we talking one kind or several?
  • Will there be the right wine to accompany said cheese(s)?
  • Are there figs/dates/grapes to go with the cheese or olives and mustard?
  • Will there be a doggy bag for left overs?
  • Oh..and what will we be coordinating? More Cheese??

A 2 lb mix of cheeses, cheeses, cheeses, and smoked sausage.

Actually a sampler from one of the companies backing a Farm to Table drive - they have too much food, they need volunteers.

Volunteers need a coordinator.

Giving it away can come off their taxes, keeping it means having to pay more taxes, throwing it away goes against their grain.

Gouda 'nuff for me. ::):

Sadly, way too much of a commute - but they are considering branching south to Portland, which is close enough.

The cheese was an incentive for showing up for the interview.

Some of it ended up in the fondue pot on Friday. Fondue is Scandinavian, right? Vikings are Scandinavian... Viking fondue! ::D:

***

I think Crazy Crow has a new human friend - he was saying 'Say nevermore'... I picture someone telling him 'Say nevermore' and giving him treats. ::): But CC was saying 'Say nevermore' not just 'Nevermore'. ::P:

How menacing was Crazy Crow while he was saying it? I gave him a treat.

Remember when I said LA Comicon had announced a December in person Convention? :bday:

Remember when so many people questioned whether it would come off? :blues:

The minions of Governor Mof Tarkin Gavin Newsom have sealed the conventions fate with a big thumbs down.

These are the same people who are keeping "The Happiest Place on Earth" the Emptiest Place on Earth [in an urban environment]. :grr:

The Organizers of LA Comicon are saying "September for sure".

Has your dad's balance been checked out by a doctor?  Or do you think there's another reason he's having trouble?

Balance check: Not that I am aware of, but my dad is an incredibly frustrating man when it comes to doctors. If one asks him a question, he'll downplay the answer or find a reason himself to dismiss his answer. It's infuriating. Won't get a colonoscopy done because he can't remember dressing himself after the last one... a ridiculous reason that also cause me great fury.

His primary care are a bunch of quacks; they don't do any type of physical exam for prostate problems (they only use blood tests), and they waived off any connection of his memory problems possibly having to do with a very bad concussion from 13ish years ago that did cause him to have short-term memory issues for well over a year (and nerve damage to his eyelid). He only lets someone go with him if it's a visit to a specialist doctor (he's finally admitting that he can't remember some things that the doctor should know). And due to HIPAA, I can't make him let me go in with him if he doesn't want me to be there.

He may need physical therapy after this heals, and I will recommend the therapist check his balance (I know several of the PTs in town, having shadowed them for PT school application hours, and know they have a machine to test balance).

It's possible his pride is also getting in the way. Still having a hard time acknowledging that being 72 is not the same as being 32 or even 62. What can I say, he's crotchety.

I will be thinking of you!

Let's all hope that Dixie will be clean after he surgery.

And I hope your dad will get the hang of using those crutches so he doesn't hurt himself.

Thank you, Dixie thanks you as well! As for dad and crutches... let's hope he doesn't have to learn the hard way... though I am not optimistic.

The interview a month or so ago passed me up for something that was basically me + one other skill.  The interview a Monday ago appears to have been a friendly bust as well.  Back to the job boards.

Sorry to hear that.  Hope your luck changes soon!

Well, he SAID he was Mary Poppins.

It is a pretty ugly trophy. Beyond that, I don't really pay attention to it all that much.  Some people go nuts for it, but it's just too expensive to go too.

Ugh, similar problem here. One week you can order delivery, but three quarters of what you want/need to justify the delivery fee is out of stock... Next three weeks it's curbside pickup only... To which I go "Uhh, with what vehicle? They won't let me on the bus with bookshelves - kind of why I want delivery in the first place..."

Wow!  If putting together the furniture didn't kill your relationship, taking it apart without directions or tools might do the trick!::D:

The best sale I ever got out of IKEA was when they offered free shipping on all orders over 250 with no exclusions.  I bought 14 bookshelf units!

I got kicked out of my office (they are selling the location so I need to rethink my home office as a permanent location aka. Where am I supposed to put my stuff?

Good looking beer!  Sounds pretty tasty too.  It is perfectly possible to get high alcohol brews of a stovetop setup, it just requires a high enough gravity wort, a good amalyse barley and a long time at enzyme temperature to break down the starches.  Of course you also need a good alcohol resistant yeast.  I used to finish my dubbles and quads with a champagne yeast and my tripples with a second injection of yeast I started and got up to a 1 gallon starter about 1 week after the first inoculation.  Best I got was a samiklause clone with s 14.1 abv

I hope you wow them at the meeting!

Let me help you with this.

It's your place so Your Stufftm has absolute priority over their stuff tm.

If you need additional space for their stuff it needs to go in the garage/carport or on a porch.

If this isn't satisfactory to the people who have dispossessed you then tell them you will need more money for a larger apartment with enough space for  their stuff to be taken care of in the manner they wish.  Since they are no longer paying for the office space you formerly occupied, this shouldn't present any problem from a financial standpoint.

This is a little bit ahead of the curve but don't be surprised if this becomes a significant topic of discussion in certain circles, specifically the circles where revenue [especially tax revenue] is being lost from all the now vacant office space and people working full or near full time from locations that are zoned residential.

Not trying to get political, just looking at how the "new normal" is going to affect my friends, who are being forced to make sometimes unreasonable adjustments in their home life in order to maintain an income.

I would also be concerned with them wanting 'extra' work. Your office is already there, so it's no big deal, right?

I wonder why this has to become YOUR problem?

They are selling the location, they should offer you a new workplace?

If they expect you to keep working from home from now on, you will need to inform them that you don't have the space for it all.

Can they offer some compensation? Rent a smaller place perhaps for their employees?

It's a bit much to just say, hey we're selling the place so everybody has to make arrangements for themselves.

Your office was determined to be an acceptable containment zone for the possessed IKEA furniture that they are trying to gather back from people's homes. The new for old "deal" was brought about by the realization that the layout of the store inadvertently (or purposefully) acting as a spirit trap, and that some of the more malignant ones over the years had found a way to escape by possessing the furniture kits. (which goes a long way towards explaining why they are the source of so much frustration, the spirit feeds off that)

Possibly this whole thing came about by design and some higher up has gone rogue by trying to stop it, or the company crunched the numbers and realized that the cost of a recall hidden as a buyback was far less than the damage caused by the situation being made public, or maybe this was the plan from the beginning and the company is now trying to "harvest" the human suffering caused by the assembly....

But since Kangaroorex's office seems to lie on some manner of layline convergence, it was bought or muscled out by IKEA who hope to use it as a safe place to store the possessed furniture and extract the suffer contained within....

@Thoramel YUM!!

@Froggy the Great Keeping my fingers crossed that something fantastic comes along soon.

@ManvsMini Sorry to hear about your crotchety dad. Hope he recovers quickly, and doesn't drive everyone nuts along the way.

Everyone keeps asking us if we have everything we need, which is frustrating. I have no idea. We have a lot of stuff, but is it what we need? I've never done this before.... Actually got some sleep last night. He was a lot less fussy. Not going to say anything foolish like "I think we're getting the hang of this" because that's only asking for trouble.

COFFEE! and as soon as I finish the first cup, WAFFLES!
