Randomness XVII: The Madness of the Quorum

Recommended Posts

-10 C and a couple inches of snow on the ground. After a long hot summer and fall winter came early and hard. Forecast isn't predicting much above freezing in the near future either. Not ready for this yet but what can you do? September was a mess for me and I didn't accomplish much or I would have been ready. Now I get to play in the snow and wet. Ah well the last 3 years the weather was even worse much earlier so I'll try not to complain too much.

COFFEE!!

My disdain for coffee has never been stronger than it is today. Imagine a silent house, before the sunrise. You are in that sweet spot where you are barely awake, trying to snuggle into the warmth for a few more precious minutes...

And then suddenly an elfing coffee machine breaks the silence, because it sounds like a dang jet engine taking off, awakening slumbering dogs, and humans alike. And then added is the cacophony of a dishwasher being started, and the banging of a pot being dropped in the sink... all because your houseguest decided to get up early, had to have coffee immediately, and can't stand dishes left in a sink (which wouldn't fit in the dishwasher, which is why they were left in the sink and would have been washed in the morning).

My current feelings towards all you coffee drinkers: GRRRRRRRRRRR.

My never-changing feelings towards houseguests who don't act like a guest and act like the inhabitant/owner: GRRRRRRRRRR.

Always chilling to experience the turn-around-and-find-them-waiting.

At least that's more of a, "what's he doing now?" expression than, "Wait until he falls down and we can eat him" expression.

This! I usually don't react to flu shots, but this one made for a pretty miserable day after. Just felt off and sore all over. Temp was higher than normal, but not fever high. It helped make this a very long week.

I've never actually gotten one before. I usually forget or worry about shortages and rather someone who needs one gets one.

But, yeah, I just want to lay down all the time. Thankfully, I got it on my Friday so I have the weekend to recover.

First day of Navaratri, the nine nights before Dasami when Durga vanquished the buffalo demon Mahisha. I'm vegetarian for these days and I'm liking it! Praying for all on here to be happy, healthy, peaceful and having calm and wisdom evermore. :)

Happy holiday to you.  Just out of curiosity, do you ordinarily find a vegetarian diet difficult?  I’m the designated cook in my family, and do about half vegetarian cooking; my wife would miss meat if I increased that, but I wouldn’t, especially ovo-lacto vegetarian.  I would need to expand my cooking a bit to go vegan and not be a bit dull.

Have you ever seen the move that they made from one of his books?

The Legend of Hillbilly John.

Based on the John the Balladeer series. I will not say it is a good film.

The Auld Grump - I used to tell two of the stories from that series - Oh, Ugly Bird and Mandy, Mandy.

I have not, but I am vaguely aware that it’s out there.  Someone ought to revisit the idea now; with all the rest of the urban fantasy in the idea-stew, it could be a hit.

Did you do the story-telling in dialect?

Mmm... Not sure why your coffee maker is so loud. Sorry you have an insensitive but helpful guest.

I've cut myself off for the rest of the day. Hoping to get a nap in around 4.

Until then I'm doing a little basing, and waiting for the laundry to finish.

Not sure either because I don't drink the stuff. I think it can grind coffee beans in addition to using pre-ground, and that may have been what they were doing.

I have attempted to make coffee for someone once in my life; was never asked to do it again. I'm totally fine with that.

As for a helpful guest... that's up for debate. If being unable to control the compulsion to impose your timetable and will on any and everything is a definition of helpful, then sure, we'll call it helpful. I'd probably go with a different word though.

EDIT: I've also successfully managed to capture one yellow jacket in the basement. Since I still haven't found out where/how it got in, I don't think I can risk a catch and release scenario.

If it sounds like a jet engine gargling rocks you can pretty much bet its an electric grinder firing up.  I have a reasonably nice one (Baratza Encore) and when we used it regularly I'd wrap it up in a winter hoodie to keep the noise down.  Nothing quite like the morning ritual of hugging a coffee grinder at 5:30 and hoping it doesn't wake up the upstairs neighbour's dog.

Grinder doesn't get used anymore because said dog always woke up. I have two hand grinders for a reason, and not just because I can make coffee two different ways more readily... Hand grinder is fairly quiet.

...But at 5:30am, soon to be 5am...  I have a Keurig for a reason... And it just isn't because of staff discounts. It's insanely handy. Does it make coffee as rich, aromatic, and tasty as my Clever or AeroPress? Nope. But even a "still three quarters asleep" fox can operate a Keurig.   A Clever has way too many easy ways of injuring yourself that early in the day, doubly so when you are NOT a morning person! (no seriously, 5am is a good time to contemplate going to bed, or tuck in with a nice book, then sleep two hours later.  If I let my schedule wander during vacation, my body will literally make a push for getting me back onto night shift hours in two days.)

If I had my way, there would be only one 5 o'clock, and it would be followed by a PM... the same for 3, 4, and 6 too.

And there wouldn't even be those times for the rest of the world that uses 0-23 on their clocks.

Just a giant pause for the entire world.

Got up at 6AM this morning to go brew beer for a club competition. It's probably the first "social" gathering we've been too in 6 months outside of some folks hanging out with us in our backyard. I put social in quotes because we were all at least ten feet apart everyone was masked up and you had to raise your voice to have a conversation. But, being a bunch of home brewers, there were sanitizers everywhere. So probably fairly safe.

The competition was to brew a popular charity beer being brewed across the country right now and then vary the recipe in some way to make it your own. The club got the ingredients from a local place selling grain kits to make it, and donating the profits. We made around 70 gallons as a group and raised about $150 bucks for the cause. My wife and I are turning an imperial oatmeal stout into a chicory coffee stout. Unfortunately the guy who came up with that idea and was going to brew with us had to start quarantining due to possible exposure a couple of days ago. Stupid Covid. But we brewed an extra five gallons for him so at least he gets to participate in the fermenting process.

Here's a few pics...

This what 70 gallons of worth of ingredients looks like.

When I say distanced, I mean it. That's our set up. There were other setups right and left, but they're too far away to get in the picture.
