Actually....sunspots are the cooler areas of the sun, not the warmer areas.

Relative to the hot areas, yes.

A reduction in sunspot activity is related to the reduction in magnetic flux line breaking through the outer layers of the sun, related to the Maunder Minimum.

That's the very basic level explanation.

If you want the actual mathematical explanation I defer to Dr. Michio Kaku and several other well know physicists with specific expertise in this area.

Announcing the arrival of Baby Hamster!

I said goodbye to Lucy this afternoon. It was time. She went peacefully.   She was a good girl.

The lovely piece I commissioned from @kristof65's wife arrived safely!            EDIT: This picture doesn't show it, but some of the glass pieces are iridescent.

I'm watching the 90s Addams Family movies. They're as good as I remember. And they have such healthy relationships.

Yup.

So, in thinking about how to raise the Hamsterling, one thing I've been thinking about is music, and wanting to make sure he's exposed to a LOT of it, and a wide variety of it. So... I found a list. Rolling Stones 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. I'm a couple of albums into it, and have the thought that maybe I should record my thoughts on each? If nothing else, it's something else I can write about for my blog, though this definitely falls well outside what I usually write about. And I can't imagine I'll be writing more than a sentence or two for each.

Really thought I would do the same. Exposed them to decades and genres wide and far! And so what do my teens listen to?!

Musak. Specifically, Italian mellow sounds by Generic Instrumental Group #2515. On CD.

Bleah.

I’m not entirely sure they don’t have a years long troll going.

Kinda shocked it's not Lo-Fi Hip Hop Beats to Study/Relax to, but maybe that was so last year?

Man. That's legit kinda depressing. They're so close to good things. I can't help but offer a totally unsolicited plan of attack:

Try to make the jump from muzak to bossa nova, Antônio Carlos Jobim or Getz/Gilberto, or throw on some Milt Jackson for xylophone done right (Bags & Trane with Coltrane is killer, and I absolutely adore his later Sunflower). If they have any bent at all for an electronic/post-rock/jazz vibe hit 'em with early Tortoise (TNT or Millions Now Living Will Never Die).

Honestly literally just try anything to save them from the soulless Lawrence Welk of our day and age.

A part of me can't quite believe I've lost most of the day to a completely, totally silly anime that makes absolutely no sense, but pmenty at the same time...

Gundam Build Fighters.

Oh well, it's been fun to watch, so there's always that I suppose ^_^

Yah I failed big time with my son as far as music goes, but he is his own, so at least I'm proud there.

Snow, snow & more freaking snow......let's get a season worth in a week in late February instead!!

I kept our freezer food safe by putting bags of snow in there.

I was gonna get a box of some sort, take whatever I cared about keeping cold, shove it in there, and set it on the back porch if the power had failed. It was below freezing out there.

Hope it stays for the second hit this weekend.

It is supposed to go up above freezing by  Friday….? Should be a touch less cold in your neck of the woods. So good news?

On today's date in history:

  • 1674 – England and the Netherlands sign the Treaty of Westminster, ending the Third Anglo-Dutch War. A provision of the agreement transfers the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam to England, and it is renamed New York.

  • 1985 – William J. Schroeder becomes the first recipient of an artificial heart to leave the hospital.
