I apparently spec'd my older machine really well. my desktop is at least 10 years old at this point and it still performs well for everything i want to do. (okay in the latest battlefront i am down to 40fps but it performs and my scores are no higher than when i play on an optimized machine -- I am comfortable enough with my skills to admit the problem is the operator, not the rig ) and still dont need a new toy. I have to admit though, the best investment i made was the SSD on the home drive. Later, i also added a 1TB SSD storage drive and again, great choice. The speed is increased and the noise is significantly reduced. I have been there and i feel for you! what i sometimes think i need to do is set up an exchange program with someone on a regular basis to just send random boxes of minis RPG books and toys back and forth (and maybe some cookies!) so that i can have a package to open and get that new toy thrill without increasing the total stock of stuff in my house. I know the BoGW is there, and I love that because I get to "receive" a whole box of minis and then get to ship most of them back off to someone else! but it would be fun to do it more often I hope things get better for you and remember, its okay to reward yourself every once in a while. The dwarves opinion of them is WAY OFF from what I expected. The dwarves are the ones SPONSORING the drow refugees. They used to be friendly nations, until a demon war a generation ago. A Dwarven generation. The dwarf focus turned outward, building surface alliances. The drow turned inwards, isolation and paranoia., and their empress is nuts, sending her armies out on slave raids. The goblin, ogre, and orc refugees fled the drow. The dwarves mobilized and fought back, expanding into drow cave systems, but being clear that they are at war with the queen, not the drow. And built a home for the drow refugees in the city. Noting can ever be simple. The dead drow crown agent was going to retire from service, after marrying into one of the noble families of the city. Mine is technically only seven years old, but the generation the parts are from would be eight or nine (I bought my 4770k based setup when the 4790k had been announced, but wasn't available for another two months). Technically this rig still does the job, but it's running into more and more memory issues (there just isn't enough for most workloads!), and more and more of my stuff is USB3, which my current motherboard doesn't have much of. Not going to lie, if I can pull it off I'm definitely looking forward to a Ryzen 5800X based setup with 32GB of ram, although it's rather tempting to try and squeeze in 64GB. I'd love to consider the option of the 12 core 5900X, but then I would definitely also have to shoehorn in 64GB of RAM, mostly because I know astrophotography stuff would greatly prefer such with so many threads, and also partially because I build my rigs to have a minimum of 2GB per thread. 8 cores (16 threads) and 32GB of RAM meets such, but for a 12 core (24 threads) CPU I'd need 48GB. Thing is though, 64GB kind of feels like going beyond overkill for most uses this rig will see. I am looking forward to having a PCIe Gen4 NVME SSD though. I won't see much in the way of improved game load times compared to my current solid state, but yeah, SSD's are rather lovely indeed. I think the biggest thing I'm going to like the most though is having enough USB ports on the back, without having to rely on add-on cards... I tend to focus on building with a slight overkill mentality, as I want my rigs to be able to handle 3-5 years of service without needing much more than drive replacements (we tend to do such every 2-3 years for mechanical ones) and maybe a graphics card upgrade. My current one does fine with gaming, but it gasps for breath when I ask it to do anything rather processor intensive (then again, not many rigs will say "sir yes sir, right away sir!" when you throw 700 some astrophotography subs at it to register align, and stack, and also clicked the higher resolution options alongside several other processing methods...). It will also see a rather decent upwards bump in minimum framerates with the upgrade though, as the new gear can process things a lot faster, and I'm not even upgrading the video card.. Yet. Video card will probably be either next year, or two years from now. I strongly suspect I won't play games any better, but I am hoping that that same astrophotography load on the CPU will be chewed through a lot faster in the new rig, as well as my photos not taking anywhere near as long to edit. In my case, my weakness is micro-transactions in phone games, so when it becomes a problem I will find phone games without micro-transactions (they do exist), or else find a game I already own (my overflowing Steam library is helpful). I discovered I LIKE having driders as an elf thing, not just a drow thing. It was one of the best things in his Borderlands game. Dancing elves, with driders plaing the fiddle. I think I will add them to Eberron, too. CITY driders! Building their webs between the buildings, nesting in the gables. And, yeah, some Undying Court driders too. Because friendly happy undead driders are just too fun to pass by. The other races will be creeped RIGHT out.
