kristof65
GEM - here's hoping Cathy has a speedy recovery. I have been fighting the urge to bang my head against my desk all day. My coworkers have been as frustrating as the customers today. TL/DR: Customer wanted quick solution but didn't like my quick solution, managed to waste another tech's time and they took 3x as long to fix it as my solution would have. Spoiler One of the other techs sent a customer a board that had some of the wrong settings in it. Possibly not his fault, someone* saved a programming file into her site files 2+ years ago with the wrong settings, up until now we apparently had no idea it was wrong. Anyway, I wouldn't stay on the phone with her this morning because I had given her all the information she needed to resolve her issue. Basically, all she needed to do was get into the menu of one of her working units, write down all the settings there, then use that to go through the menu of the board to figure out which settings needed to be changed. Using the form that I provided her, this is a 15-20 minute job tops. She just wanted me to tell her what settings were wrong. Since many of these settings are site specific, programmed by the installer and the equipment has no remote access, I can't tell her. After 30 minutes I flat out refused to wait on the line while she ran back and forth between bays. I kept telling her - just print the form out, fill it out from a working bay, and then when you're done, send us a copy so we can fix our programming file. So what does she do? She calls back, and asks for another tech. She gets the tech who sent her the board. And what does he do? He keeps messaging me asking me what she needs to change, saying he doesn't understand why the board he sent her was wrong. I kept telling him the same thing I told her - don't worry about that, just use the form to get the right settings, and have her program from that. After 30 minutes (during which time I proved that the backup file was wrong), I stopped responding to him, too - and he still fumbles around trying to help her for another 30-45 minutes beyond that. She did apparently get it fixed, by him having her go through some screens one at a time, running between two bays, and on other screens just experimenting with the settings. So over 2 hours of tech time that was just basically verbal hand holding. And she told him several times "it will take too long to fill out the form" which means she's probably never going to fill it out and send it to us. Which means this is going to happen again. I tagged the file as being wrong, but I'm sure that will be ignored 1

He's in Italy so it's very late for him to do the show for Reaper after all day streaming. 12
haldir
So I'm making up a gnome(rock) artificer for the game tonight. I make all my characters at 2nd level & then tell the DM, I'm just using the DM experience I've obtained while DMing here in the store. They are usually ok with this. Anyways, I get the Item infusions. Since this is officially my first time playing a artificer, some of the choices aren't hard, just dificult to make. I know for sure I want the Repeating one (lt crossbow). Currently I've got these: Repeating Shot (confirmed) Replicate Magic Item (most likely a Wand of Magic Detection) Enhanced Defense (+1 AC) Toss up between Enhanced Arcane Focus (spell attacks +1) or Returning Weapon (melee weapon, returns after throwing it) Since I'm not going into combat, all range stuff is what I want. I do like the fact that I can give these items to other players. Currently spells are: Cantrips Mending Ray of Frost (1d8 cold + -10 feet movement) or Frostbite (d6 cold + disadv on next attack) 1st level: (2 spells per day) Faerie Fire Cure Wounds Sanctuary Tasha's Caustic Brew (first attack in line up to 30 ft long/5 ft wide each creature in that line makes a Dex save or take 2d4 acid damage. Start of each round take 2d4, up a minute. Creature can use a action to wipe it off themselves or someone else does. Concentration spell) Also, I've decided to take advantage of the Tasha's Guide origin modification. He grew up with dwarves & he learned his craft through dwarves, thus he doesn't speak gnome. Since you get dwarf as language through artisan guild background, I took orc as my base language so he could know the language of one of the main enemies of orcs. Makes for a interesting backstory. I kept the initial stats as INT is my main & Con is always good to have a +1 in it (when my AC is already 16) Any ideas?

I'm letting her know that everyone here is pulling for a swift and easy recovery. - The story you relate is real world evidence that you can't fix stupid. Unfortunately, all you can do in your circumstances is document it, and refuse to act as an enabler [like the other tech did]. Meanwhile, make it painfully expensive for the one being stupid to continue engaging in this sort of behavior. There comes a point when some people need to be told "Maybe you need to find a different way to earn a living. Something that doesn't require any technical thinking or competency.". Sylverthorne
Wlp. WE're back. Andi has apparently not lost any foot bones (I asked, and even if he had, they probably couldn't have given it to me. Apparently, fighting the pathology department for it would have been an option..). Anyway. No lost footbones. He's home, curled up in bed, pinned with a cat. Food has been poured into him, and he figures he's fine. His foot is almost round, thanks to a ginormous bandage, and he's definitely limping (no weight on the front of the foot!), which I'm hoping will keep him from doing anything silly. I may be hoping in vain. Time Will Tell. Hospitals are still white, freaky mazes. Now, you go in, they make you scrub your hands with foamy stink juice (hand sanitizer), give you a crappy paper mask (I went in wearing an N95 under my cute fabric mask.. but, fine, I'll put their stupid paper mask on over my N95 instead), take your temperature with a wand (I need one of those!), and off you go to wherever you need to go. I ended up reading in their spacious-but-bland family waiting room with a goodie bag (I did not get into it; didn't feel like removing my mask indoors), until they came and got me. Andi ended up with the water; they gave him some, and some apple sauce when they woke him up, but I figured he'd better have the option; he's supposed to be staying hydrated. *grumble* Hospitals. *mutter* Didn't even manage to finish my book.

Crowley
Productive evening of painting. Finished the owlbear nest, and 2 treasure tokens, got the fruits and veggies in the pig cart all painted up, and painted the 3 eyed slug monster from the Bones 4 sci-fi set. All in all a rather colorful night. Now to walk the corgi, and get to bed. SLEEP!! (and coffee in the morning)
haldir
D&D at the FLGS was fun tonight. DM Jay was a very cool person & you could tell he loved the game. Something I didn't doubt as I've met/talked with him before when he was/still worked at Gamestop in town. Most likely I'll go back next week, as I like my character + we had 6 people (rock gnome artificer, wood elf fighter, human cleric, lizardman barbarian, high elf wizard & a forest gnome ranger). Hell, just fun to be back in the store gaming again, no matter what side of the screen I'm on.
haldir
Ok, just saw a new (to me) Dodge commercial, more or less it was Ricky Bobby & Cal Wells from Talladega Nights movie as kids & the actor that played RIcky Bobby's dad in it. Even better was the background music "Shot in the Dark" by AC/DC. Funny stuff. https://www.motor1.com/news/447071/dodge-talladega-nights-commercial/

WhiteWulfe
For the first time in a while, my PC rests overnight. Tomorrow, a maniacal fox performs surgery on it, also know as hardware upgrades... All I know is I don't care how cold it is outside I'm blowing out the CPU's heatsink outdoors! (or "cheating" and using my airbrush booth with no filter to vent it out - that's probably better for staying warm) Seven years now, this rig has served me well. It shall continue to serve me well with other things in the future, just not tomorrow. Definitely looking forward to some seriously improved average and minimum framerates in games, as well as the G-Sync Compatible mode for my main display actually working. Not quite looking forward to reinstalling things, but I shall survive. I'm definitely not looking forward to learning the intricacies of Windows 10...
