Randomness XVII: The Madness of the Quorum

Recommended Posts

I accidentally fasted from ~9pm last night to 5pm today, except for tea.

I biked from home to downtown to get the dragon more bugs, then to a park on the way back (and tested the pull-up bars at the park), then home. Then fed the dragon.... then realized I should eat too. I made myself a veggie burger with goat cheese and avocado and ketchup and hot sauce. All energy then diverted from my brain to my stomach and I felt weird. Sir Cyr is getting me a sushi roll now because I still feel a bit off as calories get distributed and aren't really enough.

AT LEAST THE BRATTY LIZARD GOT FED. Dragon was making all kinds of "why haven't you put bugs directly in my mouth?!" faces at me this morning.

Gah. Need to remember to eat before going out for errands on sunny days.

I finally got my latest Kickstarter shipment through FedEx.

The box in question.

Now eagerly and impatiently waiting for a shipment to arrive is pretty normal. Especially if you have a tracking number. But this time it reached a new level of ridiculousness on account that I moved within days of it being shipped.

Since I was moving more than 50 km from my old residence, the shipper had to make the address change. They contacted FedEx, and from there I thought everything would be fine.

Boy was I wrong.

Here's the itinerary according to the tracker, excluding tons of smaller depots:

Notice how some city names keep repeating again, and again, and again.

For clarity: Woodbridge and Vaughan means Toronto, and Dorval means Montreal. ~550 km between them in a straight direct drive.

When I realized after a few days that it kept going round and round, I called their service desk, multiple times. Everyone agreed it was not supposed to happen, and they assured me it was on the way.

But it kept happening. I kept calling, and each time the service desk was looking at their own data with ALL the stops and going "What. The. Elf. Is happening?!" gradually realizing that something was definitely wrong. Their system *was* showing the correct final destination address, but along the way it got blocked and shipped back.

It reached the point where every depot had to get the local manager to physically confirm that my package was going where it was supposed to go.

I was upset at first. But I decided to go all the way and enjoy the ridiculousness of it all. How far will my little package go? Quick estimates is that it traveled well over 10,000 km, somewhere between a quarter to a third of the Earth's circumference.

As a comparison, here's what a road trip across Canada would look like. Crossing all 10 provinces and two territories; all the capitals and most major cities; including Prince Edward Island.

409864365_Roadtrip.thumb.png.2317f61b49a865fb05dc80c490b21184.png

The mileage my package traveled was competitive (ignoring all the smaller depots I couldn't view but FedEx could).

It's only yesterday that I finally got confirmation that it reached my local depot, with the added notes that my address could not be located and got corrected. And the confusing part is that their "corrected" address is the same as the "unreachable" address, just a little more rough looking (but still legible).

But it's finally here, and everything looks fine.

Not wrong

Venco Menthol Kruisdrop, very addictive!!!

It has to do with traffic and roads.

If I have to drive for more than two hours in the Netherlands I'll end up exhausted.

I've been to Arizona and those roads and the maximum speed etc, it was relaxing to drive there for me.

When I got back I had to drive from Germany to The Netherlands ( I took a flight from Dusseldorf ) I immediately felt stressed by the speed, crowded traffic, aggressive drivers etc..

At one point I was talking to a visitor from Iowa about how far apart various towns in my area were. She became frustrated with me for the fact that my first answer was invariably a measurement of time rather than distance.

Why? Where she lived distance was distance. 100 miles would take about 10 times as long to cover as 10. Here in the dense and twisty Northeast, distance is not nearly so helpful. Google says it is around 9.5 miles from my place to my old office, but 6.5 to my dentist. It is much more useful to know that the 9.5 mile trip will take 15 minutes in the middle of the day but the shorter trip will take 20.

It’s a funny kind of place.

So we are actually going to play D&D tomorrow (our regular game) after 2 weeks being off due to reasons that people haven't been able to make it. I don't know, I'm just not feeling the urge for the game this week. It might be due to the game table is full of junk I need to clean off but that is a normal routine I do every week we play. Might be I was going to use today to gather up the final minis & other stuff I need, but due to work, I didn't wake up until later & we went out of town for dinner tonight. So I've either gotta do that later or just get it all done before the game tomorrow.

It might be cause work was once again a major PiTA. This whole re-grand opening thing is getting annoying. At least the "little" boss helped up this time around, then again corporate was in the store, so I guess he was trying to look the part of helping...whatever. I noticed last night there is a small pallet of 6-wheelers. Hmmm all be, they actually ordered the equipment we need. These have a shelf you can add to them, which in our case is worthless, so I go up to the little boss & request that the shelves not be added to the wheelers & his reply was "Oh I'm not entirely sure those are ours...." Huh??? He said those might go to the other depts & we'd just continue to use the ones we have (without the other depts using them). My response. "So we keep using the junk then." & walked off.

It was anther long night, 9 1/2 hr shift. Not to mention the waxitos were in last night waxing floors for the "MIGHTY GRAND RE-OPENING!!". Idiots waxed the floors around the time clock, so we couldn't punch in & had to write out a slip for our time. I really wish the aliens would come back & pick up their people.

Co-worker was suppose to go on vacation next week, but I don't think he is getting his time. This won't go over well with him (he seems to get shafted every time he tries to go on vacation) + it's gonna screw up his timeline of requests. He already delayed this request for the idiot they hired (& fired already) cause he wanted state paternity leave for the birth of his child. Again, whatever.

Dinner was good, my wife & I went to the "big" city over in Nampa, Idaho tonight as we were gonna go to Olive Garden but it was packed & the line to get in was even longer, so we opted for TGIFriday's. Its been awhile since we had go to this particular one, so it was a nice change, even if we were in the mood for Italian. I will admit, I didn't go into the place with a mask & it felt good. I'm starting to get mask fatigue & with the new CDC guidelines in place, I just didn't care what anyone else thought (then again, Idaho, so I don't think anyone noticed or cared). I've used my mask from the beginning of this whole ordeal, followed my state governor's requests (for the most part), I'm vaccinated, so why should I be punished further for people that won't be responsible to others. I've said enough on that subject.

Nice evening here, yesterday it was hot, but at least some cooler weather came in afterwards. Thumper is enjoying the weather, as you can't get that bunny inside now. It's ok, she is welcome wherever she wants to be.

Should I be worried that I consider anything within 300km to be comfortable day-trip distance?

I live roughly equal distance from Boston (160 km) and New York City (215 km), and on a number of occasions have been in both cities in the same day...

Yet I've had arguments with customers in Hartford CT who were unwilling to drive to Springfield MA to pick up parts because "it takes too long and I'd have to cross a state line!"

Rhode Islanders are the worst - you can literally drive around the entire circumference of their state in under an hour and a half, and yet they refuse to leave it because CT is "out-of-state"... There was even an old car dealership commercial making fun of how people who live two minutes from the state line won't cross it to go somewhere two minutes on the other side...

I was also going to ask this but I didn't want to be That Guy.

So. I was suppose to get three packages today. They were "Turned over to Agent for final Delivery." Which, according to Google, probably means my apartment manager. Who is asleep right now and not in the office until Monday. I sent an email, I might call the office tomorrow and leave a voicemail, in hopes that she gets it and I can get my stuff.

You can loose Rhode Island in San Bernardino County and a number of other counties across the nation.

And a torture powered walker with a naked lady chained to it!

It took me a while to track down the source for the files - my brain told me 'Topless space nuns? Must be Cults3D!' - but it was My Mini Factory.

The walker model is actually pretty impressive - much better looking than the GW original. And jointed in such a way as to be very, very poseable.

An unpainted print of the PG rated version of the Battle Nun Punishment Engine -

I will also send her a link to a less... scandalizing... model, for when/if she wants to play in stores or other public places.

Again, I like it better than the GW original, though it does not look nearly as poseable as the... screaming naked lady version..

It took me even longer to track down the 'shibari daemons' - sadly, I finally found it when I searched for 'shibari' on MMF. Called Lustmon, they are, in fact, shibari demons. (I did not know what shibari was....)

No pictures for those - there is no 'PG Version'.

His text back was "Jen?"

Why do I think there is a story there?

In my collection of miniatures is the topless Reaper Miniatures Naughty French Maid by Werner Klocke - that was Jen's player character in an O! Canada Spycraft game.

Also in my collection is a topless Chaos Mage (also by Werner Klocke) and her stark naked four armed Daemonette summons - which she played in a Pathfinder game as a summoner and her eidolon.

In the Spycraft game, her fae French Maid (stripper) spent much of her time trying to seduce my recovering alcoholic disgraced Mountie.

In the Pathfinder game, her eidolon kept crawling into bed with my paladin. (Completely innocent - but also completely naked. Eventually, he ended up marrying the eidolon. Trust me, it made sense in game.)

Guess who she had paint those miniatures?

Embarrassing her GMs and fellow players is part of her enjoyment of the game. ::P:

Not right now - she is currently back with Dennis: the Younger. They have been together, off and on, for twenty odd years.

She is also a very active member of our local LGBQT community. (Or, why I was less surprised than Megan... this time.)

The Auld Grump - I haven't played WH40K since 3rd edition - and have never played Kill Team.

There seems to be more and more mini places that have 'alternate' versions of Sisters of Battle and Slaaneshi these days, it's hard to keep track of them all.

And I imagine that this O! Canada Spycraft game cleaves very much to the stereotype of what people think Canada is. ^_^

There is one more factor I would like to add to when something is considered a Day trip or not.

Costs!

Aside the fact that our traffic is hell and a two hour drive here irritates me more than a full day trip in the USA, our fuel prices are through the roof compared to yours.

In some places we already hit the €2 per Liter!

In the southeast USA prices are very close to that currently, due to the hack of the Colonial Pipeline system.

I will go for the early retirement.

So in three years and four months I will retire.

About one year and a half before that I will start looking for a job so I can build up more savings towards the real retirement.

Some stuff that happened on today, May 15th:

  • 1618 – Johannes Kepler confirmed his previously rejected discovery of the third law of planetary motion (he first  rejected the idea after some initial calculations were made).

  • 1940 – Richard and Maurice McDonald opened the first McDonald's restaurant.

  • 2010 – Jessica Watson became the youngest person at age 16 to sail solo, non-stop and unassisted around the world.

And that's your daily history trivia. Have a nice day!

Change is scary. The important thing is preparing as best you can and doing everything in your power to make sure that your course of action is seen through.
