Riders on the Worm, Dune-inspired sticker

Recommended Posts

Young artist, first Kickstarter project. Seems to be well planned.

"The goal of this campaign is to fund the printing of high-quality stickers that are both UV resistant and waterproof.  Each sticker will be 4" x 4" - large enough to enjoy the smaller details in the artwork, printed on waterproof and UV-resistant 4mm vinyl."

KS page doesn't say if s/he has the rights to make the stickers.

If it's anything like how Fantasy Flight Games tried to get the rights for the Dune boardgame (and didn't), s/he probably doesn't.

I just may have dropped off a message to Herbert Properties LLC...

Way to go! Crush their spirit while they're still young and impressionable.  What do you think Herbert Properties will object to most? The use of copyright protected art, or the stunning likeness of the main character?  Or is it more of a "look and feel" violation with the sand worm?  You ought to write Universal Pictures, too, I believe they did a movie with a giant sand worm.

Couldn't care less about the movie. A gigantic yawnfest from start to end.

Please note that the artist is already selling a previous version of the sticker, so is already making money off of someone else's property.

Where do you draw the line?

What if someone made 'collectible stickers' with pictures of the minis you've painted?

Without asking first...

If she was using my photos, or my art, or anyone's art but her own, you'd have a point.  As far as I can tell she has not copied  anything except the concept of a person riding a giant sand worm. Concepts specifically cannot be protected by copyright.

Thus my question, what do you think Herbert Properties is going to object to?

The fact that she's using the word 'Dune' and mentions the book specifically?

And if they have something to complain about, it's way better that they say it now, rather than after the project has ended and money has been collected.

She should have cleared this with either Herbert Properties or a lawyers specializing in this type of law, and written about it on the project description page.

Lawyers and IP owners generally doesn't believe in the 'it's easier to get forgiveness than permission'...

Our hobby is already suffering from IP theft. I it OK for us to look the other way when it happens to something outside our hobby?

My final rant on this.

While I think it's unlikely she got permission, they've been more open to licensing recently. The Dune board game is even back in print now.

Whatever they and their lawyers can get away with, and whatever *they* think they need to do to protect their IP. Legality doesn't matter when it's "big vs. small". All "big" has to do is send a C&D letter if *they* think there's a reason (and sometimes even if there's not), then drag out court cases until "small" runs out of money. Sometimes "big" fails, such as GW vs. Chapterhouse, sometimes it doesn't, such as Mirmax's C&D against CMON, and some Nintendo (?) vs. a Legend of Zelda fan KS.

Regardless, delays are no good for a KS project, and backers usually have little recourse when a project runs out of money. OTOH, It's not like you're really losing money backing this KS.

I doubt they would care unless a lot of people make a fuss. Its a $400 fan project. I doubt they want to be seen as the bad guy and imo dont think shes "stealing" anything. Ive lost count of the games with big worms in it. :)

I just came in to say, when I saw the title of the post, the song "Riders on the Storm" by the Doors popped into my head, but with "Riders on the Worm" as the words.

I need help.

Wait, isn't that the whole idea? I just assumed that was the reference, which is why I backed it without reading the page.

I can't say I know specifically what they were going for. If that's what they were doing, then mission accomplished! :D

      Hello everyone,
After a first contact with STL products, we have decided to change the way we sell them and we would like to announce the launching of a new Kickstarter campaign only for STL products, because more and more people is asking us about this product, we think is a growing sector and we want to be part of it.
In parallel of the launching of the campaign, we will begin to create content through a new channel, Patreon, focused on the STL sales. Over the next few days we will give more information through our social media.
This don´t mean we are going to put aside the sale of physical miniatures, we are going to continue to maintain our habitual sale channels, the web store, and future projects launched through kickstarter. Some of you may have seen we are already working for a couple of months in our next project, focused in the Zodiac, this project will be launched after this STL campaign.
We are updating our range of products in order to reach various sectors.

      Story
Echoes of Camelot: Arthurian Legends is a project that will expand our 75mm resin miniature range with new and exciting models based on the Matter of Britan, particularly around the figure of King Arthur and his Knights. We have many cool surprises prepared should you help us bring this dream to life.
These miniatures have been sculpted and painted here at the Big Child Creatives studio with the collaboration of some of the most talented miniature artists out there. And what is more, they will be manufactured by our own talented team of resin casting experts. This allows us to monitor the process closely to ensure the best quality in the market and a timely delivery.
We have learned a lot from our previous campaigns, and we want to put all this experience to good use, repeating everything we did right, improving upon it, and correcting our past mistakes. We invite you to join us in this journey of discovery throughout the Matter of Britain and its amazing cast of unique characters.
This campaign is a journey of discovery, full of surprises such as custom bits to make your miniatures even more striking than they already are. Some of these kits will be Kickstarter exclusive, so those of you who choose to support us will be able to proudly show it through unique miniatures, even more full of life and character than our regular releases.

      Hadn't seen this here yet:

You enter the cavern with water dripping down from overhead. The smell of rotten meat is thick in the air. From up ahead in the distance you hear the loud battle cry of your enemy SQUEEEEEEE!
Painted by Ben Rodman      Pig faced orcs.  The most iconic encounter of any classic adventure. We have a nice variety of these little oinkers in the pen.
We enlisted the help of Bobby Jackson to sculpt the porcs and Jason Wiebe for all the pork besties. They did an awesome job.
Fortress Figures will be casting these beauties up in lead free white metal.
Any support for our small family owned business is greatly appreciated.
Painted by world renowned artist Rob Wheeler Painted by world renowned artist Rob Wheeler      This project is for unpainted, white metal and/or resin figurines. Models are provided NOT painted. Models are scaled to 28mm toe to eye or 1:60. Models are provided with a plastic tab/slot base. Figurines are not toys and are intended only for adults. Models may require some assembly, may have sharp or pointed parts and are a choking hazard to anyone prone to put them in their mouth.

I backed for the Ettin(ess) Bodyguard myself

All miniatures are in 28mm scale to realistic accuracy. Dinosaurs are scaled per paleontological reference. Dinosaur: 1944 is a cooperative strategy game about army men vs. prehistoric monsters. In it, you and up to 3 other players control brave soldiers in a World War II setting, struggling to save the entire world from the threat of a Mesozoic rebirth. It is in part a battle game, as you maneuver around the map and fight the enemy. It is in part tower defense, as you place ambushes to help take out or slow down the incoming fiends. Each hero has unique strengths and weaknesses – your victory depends both in mastering your own hero and cooperating with your friends.
As the game progresses, you face more numerous foes and dinosaur bosses enter the field. Eventually you face the final boss – defeating her wins the game. Beware: if the dinosaurs devastate your base camp, you’ll be stranded on Kyuryu Jima, prey to the horrors therein.
