What robs a beehive?

Other bees. Having bee fights at the entrance to the hive is a troubling sign. There are all kinds of little tricks. Throwing wet burlap over the hive can stop it. I have robbing preventative entrances on the other hives. It has a screen on the front where all the robbers try to get in (following the smell), but the actual entrance is at the top behind solid walls. The bees that live there know the way in and out but the visiting bees don’t know how to get in.

Unfortunately, this all happened on my horizontal hive, which didn’t have that screen. Completely different kind of entrance. However, upon further inspection yesterday, the bees didn’t die and then get robbed. They just flew away.

Experts aren’t sure why, but sometimes the hive just ups and leaves.

How about Hornets?

We we're lucky yesterday, we got a visitor we haven't seen in a while

@Glitterwolf

Hornets can be a problem, too. But usually hornets and wasps don’t descend enmasse to attack. The bees will send thousands of robbers and overwhelm a weaker hive. Or, several hives could send several thousands each and destroy a strong hive. Hobbyists have to keep watch quite a bit during dearths when nectar becomes scarce.

But, from what I saw, the bees just up and left. Happens. Called absconding.

Finally getting food out of the garden.  It's been too hot for the plants to set fruit, so even though we got tomatoes earlier than ever before, they didn't set during July, and this is all we're going to get until it cools down again.

This is a normal sized tomato, some Sungold tomatoes which come about the size of a marble, mini yellow peppers (I'm the only one that eats them so they don't need to be giant), and our first cucumber.  I think the dark green peppers are anaheim.

We didn't really plant much of a garden this year as that part of the yard is going to get torn out and redesigned in the future. But I did plant a little herb and pepper garden in pots and that's doing well. Brought this in over the past few days. The yellow peppers at the bottom are Hungarian hot peppers. About twice as hot as a jalapeno and great for cooking. The orange above them are Tequila sunrise. They're a sweet pepper that tastes really good raw. The lone purple pepper is a sweet pepper of unknown variety because I lost the tag. But it's very tasty. The bigger red ones are an Ohio heirloom Sheepnose sweet pepper. They've been growing like mad and have been in a lot of dishes lately. The mix of colored peppers at the top are all Ajit Crystal and their flavor changes depending on color. Doesn't matter though, they're about ten times as hot as a jalapeno. So that's all you remember. And the little red ones are a mix of Jingle Bell and Fireball peppers. One is not hot, the other starts out kind of cinnamon flavored and then gets hot. I keep them mixed up because I like surprises.

I'm definitely planting a few of these next year.

Time to harvest the pear tree!

Got two. Not two trees. Two pears.

May heavy snow broke most of the blooms and branches. Lucky to get those two.

Also finally got a lime from the indoor tree. Colorado is not exactly known for citrus so I am good with that. It is slowly being consumed for various drinks.

So the Pothos plant I "adopted" at work has been under the weather for a while. More and more leaves turning yellow, not growing as much, etc.

Looking closer (it's on high shelf, so I had to climb a step ladder), some roots were poking out the bottom drain hole. Probably time for repotting in a larger planter.

So it was a *little* root bound. 😱

And those roots were quite stuck to the old planter. I had to take a knife to scrape it off the sides.

So after loosening the roots as best I could, I repotted it into something larger with some fresh soil and a good amount of water.

It'll take a while for it to recover, but it should do much better.
