Probably 6 or so for most trips. I plan out where to stay, main reason for going and how to get there. The rest is up in the air. I enjoy spontaneous activity, but the anticipation is an important component, as I have discovered. I am generally happier and more productive when I have a big event to look forward to.
Zink
2 hours ago, TaleSpinner said: July 13: From complete spontaneity (1) to obsessive planner (10), where do you fall on the planning scale and why? Probably a 7 or 8. For work and travel I always have a list of priority things that "must" be done and then some slack for unexpected things or delays. When making purchases I often do a ton of research into what brand/make is best and hunt to find out where is cheapest. I rarely make impulse purchases and even more rarely make expensive impulse purchases. When travelling I like to have hotels booked ahead because it's a major pain trying to find something not roach infested in the middle of the night with a vehicle full of kids in a strange city. I also like to know where things are so that I'm not wasting hours driving back and forth if I can do a single pass without backtracking. I'd probably lean towards totally obsessive except that the world often doesn't agree with my plans so I've learned to be flexible. Just because I have my list of plans doesn't mean they'll all get done exactly when I want. I try not to set many hard deadlines. When I was young with no responsibilities I kept a toothbrush with me, a change of clothes in my vehicle and would take off anywhere on a moments notice. Worst case I crashed on someone's floor or in the vehicle and had to wear the same clothes for a few days. Hard to do spontaneity like that when you have to look after a farm and family first.

MusicalFeline
4 hours ago, TaleSpinner said: July 13: From complete spontaneity (1) to obsessive planner (10), where do you fall on the planning scale and why? Generally, about 3.5. I'm more of a spur-of-the-moment kinda guy, but when it comes to big stuff, I plan stuff. Not very much, but I plan it.
ManvsMini
5 hours ago, TaleSpinner said: July 13: From complete spontaneity (1) to obsessive planner (10), where do you fall on the planning scale and why? Really depends on what aspect of life I'm dealing with. Meal planning? Eh, probably a 3, as long as I have food to eat that's about as far as I think. Normal daily stuff nowadays is still probably a 3, maybe a 2. Without work, I just keep the day open to do whatever tasks pop up suddenly. My painting generally suffers from it, because inevitably if I try to paint, within five minutes something pops up that eats up the rest of the day. When it comes to travel/work/pandemics, I'm a Cylon, because I have a plan.

redambrosia
6 hours ago, TaleSpinner said: July 13: From complete spontaneity (1) to obsessive planner (10), where do you fall on the planning scale and why? I range, probably from 3 to 8, as someone else said. Trips of any length are more of an 8, going to the grocery store, more like a 4, getting my drivers license was like, a 10, because of documents.
Cranky Dog
9 hours ago, TaleSpinner said: July 13: From complete spontaneity (1) to obsessive planner (10), where do you fall on the planning scale and why? I... spontaneously plan obsessively? I'm having a hard time figuring out a reasonable answer. I know I can plan some things long in advance, but end up changing my mind at the last minute, or decide at the last moment to do a thing that requires organized thinking. The times it looks like I'm well organized is when time schedules are not of my own making. So if I have an appointment at X o'clock, then I have to be up by this hour, get coffee, leave no later than that hour and take into account any traffic. Don't want to disappoint people. But if I'm home, on my own schedule, my own projects and pastimes, with no constraints. Stuff will happen when I feel like it. The other people aren't there to observe and appreciate the effort, so screw it.
Dilvish the Deliverer
I will avoid the cop out by saying it varies. So I'm going with a middle of the road 5. I typically plan things for a certain time/date, but I don't really bother planning any specifics unless there is some sort of deadline involved (i.e. classes at RCon). I find it much easier to just wing things when I get there. Generally I find the experience better if I leave myself open to any developments rather to have to pass up things because I have already made detailed plans. Again, depending on the importance/expense this can vary dramatically.

It really depends on the situation in question. In my hobbying, I'm 5 ish; I make plans and sometimes I stick with them, but it's ok if I don't as long as I'm enjoying what I'm doing. At work, I'm more like 7 or 8; I want all the details/information I need as well as my tools and supplies available and ready to go when I start a project. That way, I can get left alone to do what I do. Stuff like Reapercon: I'm an 8 or 9 when it comes to organizing and planning the getting there and home safely part. Everything in between the arriving and departing is a 2. I have noticed that I am more into planning stuff now that I've gotten older; having a family has tamed me somewhat. When I was younger and alone, I was all about making it up as I went along.

Generally, 6ish. I like to have a plan. I don't need one, but it makes me more comfortable. However, even in my most detailed plans I tend to build in time and opportunities to for deviation, or unstructured time.

It varies, for work I'm about a 10 and for home life it's about a 5. The only exception is if we're planning something that involves a booking at a certain time(i.e. ferry, cinema, exhibition etc). Then I'll go into full plan for all eventualities mode. This came in very handy last year when the road that we were traveling on last year had a massive accident an we had to take a 60 mile detour to get to where we needed to be on time. As promised, here are some photos showing why I love staying where I do. Make no mistake, Its certainly not in the middle of nowhere and I can hear distant traffic anywhere in the site, but its proof that nature can flourish if we just give it a chance. All of these photos were taken in the last couple of weeks. Spoiler Sometimes we even get sun! These aren't the best shots, but it's not often you see a Roe Deer with her fawn. I was about 200 feet away and she just gently guided him into the undergrowth. Absolutely gorgeous and a real privilege to see 11
