Mischevious, playful, all sorts of sillyness, and not as awesome as foxes but boy are they tempting... And they sure know how to get across hard pack snow in style! :P

Usually I do, I might dial back if it's a very bad sculpt or a damaged print. I do need to feel a connection with the subject, that's the main reason I would never do commissions. Think what would happen if I should be forced to paint a Halfling for example...well maybe, If it got trampled by a nice dinosaur.

To paraphrase an old saying, "Minis are never finished, only abandoned" I'm never happy with my paint jobs, I usually only stop painting them because I've burned out on them or that they need to be used in the game that I'm painting them for. After that, I carefully pack them away to stop myself from going back to them and changing something. My list of unpainted minis is fairly long and I'd never get round to painting them if I was constantly 'fixing' my old perceived mistakes. 15 minutes ago, malefactus said: I always give it my best shot...poor as that sometimes is. Poilu_1914
I'm with Glitterwolf, gotta have a connection to the figure. But I try my best even if it's not there but I tend to get overly critical with figures I can't connect to and overdo them.

I do. There's always that little critical voice in the back of my mind that urges me to make it better. Even if it's Bones disposable monsters for a RPG quick combat and no one will notice the finer details. Mixed results, but the effort is there and I got to explore all the nooks and crannies of the figure. We all know how adventurer minis have crazy amounts of detailed gear. And of course, the damn eyes. We all instinctively notice if they're straight or not. Curiously, it's during ReaperCon classes and activities that I dial it back due to time constraints. Still decent results, but always feel I need to go back and touch it up some more.

CashWiley
1 hour ago, TaleSpinner said: Thursday, July 30: Do you always paint to the best of your abilities, if not, in what circumstances do you dial it back? I've done a few minis casually and I try not to obsess over game plastics. For the most part I try to learn new things with every project, because that's how I am. In traditional, I've only done a few portraits in paint, but I did a small landscape that was just for fun and not very technically well-executed. But I do tend to work at the limit of my ability in general.
Moderator TaleSpinner Posted July 30, 2020 Author Moderator Share Posted July 30, 2020 I asked this question because for the past few years, I have been trying to develop a "Quick Style". I just can't spend the 10 to 40 hours on every piece like I would when I give it my all. I really just want to get more of my gaming Bones minis painted, so I am trying to pull it back, and yet still do a good job. Some of the older Bones minis help with that as some of the details are so distorted that I just can't get into the painting too much (I'm working on the Tre's Ettin from Bones 2, but several features on its belt are unrecognizable lumps). I am finding that I can dial it back for Bones and use some speed techniques, but if I pull out a metal mini, its going to get all I have to give it.

I think I always try to paint as skillfully as possible, no matter how limited my skills may be. Luckily, I almost never have a reason to rush a miniature. When I have some kind of X deadline, I work way ahead of time and my deadlines are very infrequently imposed, only in occasions for birthdays or gifts, stuff like that. I could definitely do better, but there always comes that moment when I actually just want to finish and have to be satisfied with what I've done up to that point. If I started really getting into free hand, I'd never finish. Edited July 30, 2020 by 72moonglum
Zink
2 hours ago, TaleSpinner said: Thursday, July 30: Do you always paint to the best of your abilities, if not, in what circumstances do you dial it back? I honestly rarely paint to my highest ability. I paint to relax and try and finish the plastic horde I have. 80% of what I do is a very fast tabletop standard, often only a base coat and some washes. Roughly around a half hour per mini for the troops. Characters/leaders or if I'm doing smaller warbands get a bit more detail maybe close to an hour each. Every so often I try to push my limits but even then several hours is usually my max on a single man sized mini. I think around 7-8 hours is the max I've ever spent on one. I'll never be a top quality painter but I'm good enough to impress the uninitiated and not be ashamed to show off my work to those that know more.

I've been working on being faster on some things, but adding in touches here and there that add to the mini without taking up too much time. I'll never have a force ready for Carbonite next year if I take 25+ hours per mini. What perplexes me the most though is I have minis I've put 1.5-2 hours of work in, called done, and absolutely love how they turned out, so if I could get my painting down to say 6-9 hours per mini but still with a decent tabletop quality for most, I'd be happy ...And I'd be ecstatic if I could get it down to the 4.5-5 hour range for most things.
