Wizkids Athrogate conversion

Recommended Posts

Ok lets talk about this mini.

I got it two years ago in the Legend of Drizzt boxed game and just never use it. Why? Because it just looks weird for a dwarf and it is overall lacking if that makes sense. But I believe it has potential to look pretty cool and become one of my favourite minis. This isn't the first time that I dislike and convert a Wizkids "hero" mini but this conversion will be the most drastic so far.

So lets begin. First of all, the thing that bugs me the most are Athrogates flails. I've found some artwork online and here's how they could look like:

And, if you take a look at the first image above, they look like a pair of maracas:

This obviously means that I have to do a weapon swap. I will also change his hand position to make the pose more intimidating.

The second thing that i dislike is his spiked armor, it is supposed to look cool I guess but to me those spikes resemble crystals and it just looks super weird to me (kinda like the dark souls crystal armor) and doesn't go with the overall vibe of the mini

That means I will also remove the spikes from his helmet, shoulder armor and boots and make them look different and hopefully better.

I'm sorry for a long post, and I will keep you updated. Thanks for looking!

Sounds like an ambitious project but I hope it comes out like you envision.

I have cut all of the spikes with an exacto knife, next i will use fine sandpaper to smoothen the surfaces. I decided also to add horns to the helm, i will make them out of greenstuff.

As for the weapon swap, I have some decent looking flails in my bits bag, but I believe two axes will suit him better, or maybe a two handed axe. Here are some handaxe heads I found, but I probably have more laying around that I will look for later.

Also for everyone watching If you have any tips or tricks to share you are welcome. I really like doing conversions and I've done a bunch already, but I always like to hear suggestions and comments from other people in this hobby. :winkthumbs:

Here's some progress, I've sanded the parts that needed to be smoother and I put pins in his helmet for the horns and in his arms to change the hand position.

I've stuck the hands back. I believe this altered hand position makes the pose more dynamic. For the axes I've chosen for his right hand an axe from 03403: Na'Kaat Female Half Dragon Paladin, and for his left a two handed axe from the North Star Gnolls Sprue. Next I will fill the gaps with greenstuff and sculpt him some horns.

In my continuing effort to continue at least 1 dragon a month, here is my next entry, the wizkids gargantuan dragon.  I believe I should name this one PanicusMaximusNecakus because this one presented special and exciting problems because the dragon has apparently decided to do the flamenco feather dance and his wings were a major obstacle when trying to paint the left side of the dragon's body.  I realize the cause was because they were trying to get the dragon in the box but man was that difficult to work with.
I wound up spending a lot of time with one hand pinning the dragon and the wing to the table while I painted with the other.  It was not the most convenient method of painting.  He was also very prickly... very, very prickly!
because its such a big base, I wanted to provide some interest for the game.  I used the old road stamp from Basius to generate some pieces of broken road amongst a clearing in early fall.  I was thinking of adding a smudge of snow but if I did it would conflict with the ruined stone.
Overall though I like how he came out and I really like the results on his tail and his crown of horns.
Hope everyone like him.  This is still tabletop quality as I have been trying to produce quantity over quality.

More vintage minis from my childhood.  Been soaking a dozen or so in isopropyl  for about a week to get the 40 yr old enamel paint off them.  With much scrubbing some of them came out pretty clean!  Will post as they come along, here's one of my all-time favorites. I remember when I bought him in a little attic hobby shop in Ithaca, NY. Unfortunately I don't remember the packaging.  Such a stoic little dude...any ideas?

My next project is another ranger. I already have a cool male elf ranger, but thought it might be nice to add a female version. So going through the Bones minis I came across Nienna.
Unfortunately her face detail was very shallow and detail was overall a bit hit and miss. I love the pose, though.
Out comes the scalpel, greenstuff and bitz box.
Two evening sessions later I swapped the head and weapon, shaved away some of the front detail and resculpted the area.
I am not entirely finished yet, but soon I can establish the base colours.

Durgam Deepmug, one of several figures I picked at random to paint for table use during the early weeks of covid-19 lockdown.  I tried a little magical/ ice effect on his sword.

So this is me trying to paint non-metallic metal for the first time. The mini is one of the dwarves from thehnolog's castlecraft line. Since it is my first, I'm pretty happy with the result. I hope I'll get better at this over time. All comments and suggestions regarding NMM are welcome. Thanks for looking!
