Group of Minis WIP

Recommended Posts

So I usually work on 3-12 minis at a time. So I can work on one and switch off to ones after I get bored with it. This group is a bit bigger than normal, but it gives me options as I paint/get bored with one/or want to try something different. I had finished two in this group quickly a Rogue/Assassin and the Halfling with a lantern. I added a couple of PCs to the group working on and it stalled a bit... so throwing up a WIP on the group to get motivated.

Below are the guards from Bones 4? and then the halberdsmen from 3 maybe (they looked like they belong together)... anyways, I liked the green and Bronze combo someone posted on these forums, so I went with that. The 3 I completed the bronze on have different bronze or gold, and after a wash of Argax Earthshade, the armor ended up looking basically the same. Added the Halberdsmen after, so trying a different undercoat - Worn Olive. Will try a recipe I found on a Blog 'Jen's Mini Page'.

Next are some PCs I am trying to get completed...For fur, I like how Russett Brown looks over white primer.

Next are ones I started with, and are almost'ish done. I put many coats of green on the Tortoise to make it bright, but not cartoon like.

Many days later, and finally got some painting in.

So on my guards, I put a base of Reaper Muddy Olive down, and today managed a quick layer of Scale75 Negro Gold down. Next will likely be shading, not sure if I will go with the dk olive/purple per JenMiniPainter formula or combo of GWS Argax Earthsade/Drk Olive/Purple to keep in line with other guard minis I painted already... not sure if I want to keep same look or try new.

(JenMiniPainter formula I am emulating>RMS Muddy Olive, then a base coat of P3 Brass Balls. I shaded it with RMS Rotting Wood and then RMS Violet Shadow, and highlighted with Dragon Bronze).

The Wizard I shaded his cloak with Army Painter blue ink... made it a bit dark, but can likely fix with layering purple back up.

The dwarf looks like a squished Santa. Worked on cloak, now just need to fix Armor. Tried a quick Frost Blue and Steel wash on it, but ended up blotchy. Not sure what to paint the cloak hood trim... thinking a golden tone, and go with Reds/Golds for accent colors. Any C&C or hints welcome on these...

Newer ones pained with Dark Olive wash, and then Imperial purple as wash on under/shaded areas. Then went back over high areas with S75 N Gold. It has nice look, like under calfs and if you look up under arms, etc, but washed out a bit. Older one with Argax Earthshade wash on left. I like how it has deeper contrasts. Think I might try a liner on one to define armor pieces and other just do an Argax Earthshade wash on all, and see what looks better.

On Right is Argax Earthshade and Left is lining... I think if I did again, I would do both are needed and then a last light highlight of S75 N Gold.

Next to finish them up...

Basically done with the Guards. More fiddly bits than I expected - Horn, Dagger, bolts on the shields, etc. Used Micron pen .005 on iris/pupil for first time. Worked out fine for that, especially since I had to go thru hole on helm. On the two halberdsmen, I used Reaper Steel Wash over the white primer, and happy with that quick process and look. Just a bit of touch-up needed. So on to the next mini... thanks for looking.

Tiefling-Demonborn - some of the components done, staff, bottle, lamp, etc. Touch ups and fiddly bits work to be done...

Barbarian Work - i have all the unpainted sections blocked in with a base coat down now. Will do metals in Bronze using the Jen's Mini page formula. Will likely leave the tanned sided of the pelt that buttery cream color, a nice elk skin has that smoothness to it.

Worked a bit on the Dwarf. Used Armor Grey HD and went over high areas of armor to bring the blue down and did a heavy wash of black. Put a layer or two of Chestnut brown on cowl, I think that looks good, and will look to work yellows in. Not sure what to make the buttons/badges/gems in the cuff/cowl, but maybe red gems. For his hair, not sure if to go, black, black w/grey streak, red, blonde or brown... I will think on it. Do not want it to blend in too much to the gold/yellow, grey or red that I have, but complement it still.

Bit more work on the dwarf, trying to finish off the armor. Plus hood trim work on the gems to block those out.

Not much progress in last couple of months. Work is keeping me busy (good thing I guess). Barbarian and Wizard work. Barbarian did some padding and added some shadow to elk shin smoothside, and mainly weapon and metal work. Where metal work ended up being half NMM and highlight of metal paint... not able to fully drag myself away from the sparkle...
