GenCon

Anyone participating in GenCon? I have been super busy and totally forgot about it until seeing a comment online about it.

What do you think? Am I missing out? What is worth it?

I signed up for tickets yesterday afternoon.  I didn't get the email confirmation until after I went to bed.  There are a few things I'm somewhat interested in watching but I'm not super exited for it.  Plus I have to work, so that limits what I can see today.

There discord is really lively with about 2400-4500 people on given the time of day, with allllllll kinds for stuff going on, I've been monitoring it closely. there twitch channel has a consistent 3000 people watching throughout the day for panels, interviews and games.

I was on most of the weekend from Thursday evening until tonight.  It was much better than my modest expectations, though, as you might expect, miniatures-based events were a little scarce. I was in three roleplaying sessions on a mix of platforms, all of which were quite good (barring a few technical issues...)

My son and I did a little personal 12 color, 60 minute, speed paint challenge today on the side, to make up for it.

This was his:

I think I had fun.  It felt like a real convention to me - including the Saturday afternoon emotional slump I usually hit at Gencon and Origins.  Miniatures were basically missing.  No cool tables to look over.  No paint n take to stop by.  The vendor hall though was a visit to my FLGS.

What I really felt missing were the friends.  Stopping by for a chat and a visit.  Sharing a meal.  Grabbing a beer.  Comparing loot from the vendor hall.  THIS is what I sorely missed.

Starfinder went pretty well, using discord for voice and roll 20 for the map and dice roller worked out better than using roll20 for both.

I've heard that is the way to go for virtual games. It'll probably be what I use for my RCon Online game.

Yah, that sums up I think every one at a virtual con vs the real thing. I know I'll miss it at RCon this year.
