Great job with everything! I especially love the sheen of the jade statues, and your OSL is coming along quite nicely.

I think I need to extend the green to meet the red, but I'll leave it for the next session.

I think you're right, if would benefit from that. I think it could be cool to try overlapping the different color lights a little. Though if you do that, I would keep in mind that this is additive color mixing, not subtractive. So you'd have yellow in the overlap of the green and red, and magenta between the red and the blue.

Looking forward to seeing its progression!

Thank you everyone for all the kind words, I haven't had much painting time lately so here's the progress I've made in the last couple of weeks.

First of all, I filled in the gap between the green and red glowing runes. This is as far as I'm probably going to go with it as it's supposed to draw the eye towards the portal, not be the focus of the piece. Which is a shame because I genuinely enjoyed painting them- I think I must be a glutton for punishment ::D:

Apologies for the blurry photo.

Emboldened by David Diamondstones Reapercon Twitch OSL class, I started work on the glowing eyes on the "dormant" side of the portal. I highlighted the eyes and surrounding areas with Pure White...

...then glazed/layered over the white with the colours of the respective dragon heads. I had to redo this step at one point because I mixed up the positions of the heads and red and blue were in the wrong place. Heres how it ended up.

I need to do something subtle with the Foo Lions, but I'm not sure what at the moment.

My plans for this week involve weathering the 'inactive' side of the portal. Something hidden away in a dungeon for so long is sure to have some native flora growing on it, right? Mosses and lichens don't need much light, so I took some photos of this wall today as inspiration. I'm hoping to get some hobby time tomorrow, so here's hoping I can get started on it.

Thanks for reading my ramblings everybody. As always, all comments and criticism are appreciated.

I think the lichen growth would look pretty good, if you are leaving them as stone statues (are you?). Will the eyes of the dogs flare with energy on the active side of the portal too?

My current plan is to keep them as statutes on the inactive side and give them the same weathering as the portal. I'm considering doing the glowing eyes on the active side, but I'm wary of messing up the finish on them if I get it wrong. I'd need to make the eyes blue, yellow or white so that it would stand out from the green.

I also realize that I need to do something with the orbs that the Foo Lions are holding. I'm considering making them black with a mix of the 5 different dragon colours in the recesses. Mostly because I never go for the easy option, because where's the fun in that?

Hey all,

Sorry about the lack of updates, my hobby time has sporadic at best recently. Progress has been made on the portal, as can be seen on this tidying up shot of the inactive side.

171030887_DSCN32361.thumb.JPG.baa2f2e8ee3b2ce262d05fcf95062d83.JPG

I spent a bit of time mixing up various ratios of artists texture paste, sand and mica gel to see how they worked with washes and drybrushing

and I finally settled on the 30/30/40 mix. It took about a day for it to cure properly, probably due to the artists medium.

I used the Wilderness Green as a base, then worked in the Turquoise and Yellow in alternating layers until they blended in together

The colour was getting a bit much  at this point, so I reinstated some of the original grey from the paving stones

792854073_DSCN38711.thumb.JPG.9e06aadfeb43d23feb0c0ea507f1c08b.JPG

I wanted the moss to almost look as if it was the start of a slime or ooze, mostly to distract my players from the real threat. I've used weathering on a mini to suggest 'wrongness' before, so hopefully they'll take the (wrong) bait this time ^_^

Next up for this week is finishing the active side of the portal. Thanks for looking everyone, as always all comments and critiques are welcome

Great work on this!  I love the glowing eyes.  Your work on the stones and mold really pushes it over the top.

Thanks for all the encouragement and 'likes' everyone, without your support I probably would have talked myself out of finishing this awesome mini. I have a bad habit of getting to a certain point and then carefully putting the mini away "to finish it when I'm a better painter" You'd think I'd figure that was a bad idea after more than a decade, right?

This afternoons painting was brought to you by some seasonal goodness, Trick r Treat and Dr Sleep. There wasn't even many feline interruptions either, mostly due to my housemate keeping them occupied. Apologies for the bad photography.

Today was mostly concerned with all the fiddly details

1150292557_DSCN41721.thumb.JPG.5337521c8335dab10b3cf94e9fa44f32.JPG

I continued the magical energies from the floor up onto the paving slabs. This is where this thread was invaluable as I'd completely forgotten which colours I had previously used :)

1493799709_DSCN41771.thumb.JPG.51f82a3f19eef8707f89e4f34c7a03a4.JPG

I worked on the glowing eyes of the guardian statues and tried to lighten up the balls that they were holding.

(posts photo of paints for future reference)

So this is how its looking right now. I think I need to tighten up some of the details, but I'm going to sleep on it and look at it tomorrow. I think I'm almost done though. Any comments and suggestions are, as always, warmly appreciated.

I'm really enjoying watching this come together. Great stuff. Especially that magical energy spilling out onto the floor thing you've got going on there.

Beautiful work, love the dragons and guardian statues. I think the OSL on the floor is a tad bright, but the idea is awesome and well executed.

Of you make the light source brighter it may work better.

Thanks for everyone's kind words!

I did a little bit of tidying up and tried to pop the highlights in the statues eyes.

Here's a link to the Show Off thread, thank you so much everyone- I never would have finished this awesome mini without your encouragement!

(Yes, the title is a throwback to a contest I ran years ago on here....no I'm not running another one, with today's shipping rates, ugh......)

This is where I'm going to work on 3D printed terrain pieces for Star Wars Legion, most of which currently are going to be spaceships.  Because why use generic terrain when you can be shooting Rebel Scum hiding behind X-wings and the like?

      Up first is this:

All the FDM bits are there, but most of the resin bits (guns, ramp, interior) are still in a bin waiting to have their supports removed and cured.
I figured I should get a thread started as maybe that will get me over that initial hurdle of actually starting.  This has all been printed for a week or two and just sitting there....plus I'm gonna need that airbrush booth for other things sooner or later....

I will, of course, be attempting to make this look somewhat like the original episode 5 version, not some retconned prequel sillyness.

Now to go listen to some Prism.

2020 has-been rough on everyone but some people have had it rougher than others.  A friend of mine is disabled and has had a really hard time just trying to keep basic necessities done.

I thought I would send her a little friend who's got simpler an cuter problems. Purple is her favorite color.  He goes out in the mail on Monday

      Hope you like him too...
