Scythe Leaders

Recommended Posts

Been a long time since I've posted in Show Off. But hey, a load of painting, some procrastination, some waiting for new brushes to come in, and some more procrastination will do that.

So, recently I've been painting the faction leaders from Scythe by Stonemeier Games. Love that game a lot, and so I decided I'd paint the minis from it, 'cuz hey, that's what I do.

However, I wasn't in the mood for painting bland old mechs four times over, in addition to the leaders, so I just decided to paint the leaders. Seemed the sensible thing to do. So, here they are in order of, well, the order I painted them in.

First up we have Anna and Wojtek, of the Republic of Polania. When I have the choice, I always play as them, so I wanted to give a bit of extra love and attention here. However, love and attention are two very difficult things to give when your brushes are fraying and honestly just aren't very good. So, bought some new brushes. Unfortunately, I had no desire to go back and repaint, as that would certainly blur out of a lot of detail, of which there wasn't much to begin with, so I decided to keep what didn't look so great and apply my new skills to what wasn't painted.

As you'll also see with the other minis, I tried to apply the faction's color as a highlight color of sorts. I didn't want it to be the main color, as that'd make it lose its specialness, but I wanted it to catch the eye as it swept across the board. In this case, the faction color of Polania is white. Thus, Anna's cap and scarf are white. You'll see similar stuff done later on with the other minis.

Next up we have Olga and Changa, probably my favorite of the bunch. This pair from the Rusviet Union was an absolute joy to paint, especially in the case of Changa. I'd never painted a tiger before, and man! It really had never occurred to me how incredible these creatures are, despite all my zoo trips and whatnot. This was also my first major attempt at painting good eyes, keyword being good (Wojtek's black dots don't count). I think they turned out pretty good, but the left one is a little wonky. Hey @Corsair, you should make this one of your questions in "Getting to Know You". Which would you fear more, a tiger, or a pretty Russian lady with a Tommy gun?

Coming in at number three, we've got Gunter, Nacht, and Tag, from Saxony. Being German in heritage, I immediately knew which dog was which* (And no, he couldn't have pulled a switcheroo on me. It's in the rulebook of which one is which. No joke). However, I thought that it wasn't quite fair to Tag to have only Nacht on the mini. Plus, I didn't want to have to paint the dog completely black, as that's no fun at all. So I decided I'd make the dog on the miniature a mix of both dogs. Maybe it's their child, I guess?

*For my non-German-speaking friends, Nacht and Tag mean night and day, respectively.

Next up, we got Bjorn and Mox , from the Nordic Kingdoms.

Being from the Midwest, you have no idea how hard it is to not put a Minnesota Vikings joke here.

Anyways, this is probably my second-favorite of the five. One major reason would be this was the first of the Scythe minis I painted where the human and the beast weren't standing side-by-side. This was a ginormous boon to me, as I was getting sick and tired of painting in the itty-bitty space between the two.

You'll also notice I took some artistic liberties with his hair. Deal with it. :B):

Somehow most of the extra pictures were lost in cyberspace, so this is all I've got. At least the ones that remain sure do nicely showcase Mox's eyes.

Well, I must've really lost my mind on this one, becasue those are NOT Bjorn and Mox, rather those two are Zehra and Kar, of the Crimean Khanate. Ah well, I mean, we all make mistakes, don't we? Don't we?

Anyways, I really don't care for these two. I didn't feel inspired at all and it just seemed like a very bland mini. But hey! It had a bird, and I love painting birds, so shut up, self.

I also am a bit put off by the color of the base. It just doesn't seem right...

Note the little speck of white near the bottom of the base. Any good painter will know why that's there, but only bad painters will know how it's still visible. *sigh*

Overall, these were some really fun minis to paint, despite the low level of detail. I look forward to my next game and getting to see them on the board!

Couple of extra notes:

Yes, I know these aren't all the Scythe leaders, but I don't own the expansion, so I guess those'll have to come later.

You might notice some dust on the minis. This came from my clear coat, and it rubs off upon touch. Rather than waste my time brushing it off, I left it there it so it gets rubbed off during play and normal handling. One bird, zero stones.

Wait, that doesn't sound quite right. How does it go again?

Curses and befuddlement! Sorry, fellas!

I'll put the .zip files here. Won't be formatted nicely, I'm afraid, but hey... They'll be there.

That is also very odd, as they're showing up perfectly for me. But maybe that's because I uploaded them? Maybe because I already have them on my PC?

Weird stuff, man.

My first Reaper Forum post! Please give constructive criticism if you have any suggestions!

At first I was going to make this dark priest Caucasian, but then decided to go for a “Abdul Alhazred” feel, complete with human flesh scroll and inscribed in blood.

I am glad to be on the forum and will post more on my extended “sinister graveyard cult” that I am working on!

Mold lines, it seems, are my weakness.  Fortunately, this model, which I absolutely love, had lots of wrinkly bits that I could use to try and hide them.  :-)

My D&D group's cleric is a follower of Chauntea, a plant goddess. He wields a scythe. He's also incredibly short for a human. He's absurdly chipper. He's the city's marijuana grower and distributor.

For some reason, the player picked this figure, one of the townsfolk, to represent his character. I don't like this figure. Player stated that I could do low detail on him. I'm not sure there is a sufficient paint job to give him a cheerful face.

C&C as I go is welcome. He isn't going to be one I super nitpick but I'd like him to be generally tidy. Might attempt OSL for practice.

Oh bother. I thought I was in the WIP forums. Serves me right for doing this on the phone. Mod help pretty please?

I do have a princess mousling to alleviate the death and dead stuff painting I've been doing. But I couldn't resist putting a face on this one. Any resemblance to FLOTUS is entirely coincidental, seriously. I think the shading/highlighting toned it down, but the figure does have the angular structure on the face.

To conceal the mold lines I failed to remove on her exposed leg and arm I'm going to freehand some tattoos. I really should do better on removing mold lines. Oh well.

My Bones III Kickstarter fulfillment arrived a couple of days ago, and I've been happily sorting through them. I've engaged in all three Reaper kickstarters so far, but I doubt that I'll do another — it's not that they're not a good deal, but there's always a very, very long wait for them to arrive, and they've all been very heavy on the character figures, of which I really do have an ample supply. I mainly want the monsters, and it'll be simpler just to buy them individually when they eventually appear in the shop.

I chose this one to start the painting with, mainly because it would be very quick and easy to do, and in fact it only took about twenty minutes. It probably would have taken longer if I'd actually removed any of the mould lines, which I kind of forgot about in my enthusiasm.

I don't know what its SKU is; I couldn't find it with a (fairly brief) search in the online store.
