Reapercon questions, it was a nothing for me. Timing just didn't work out for me to check things out.

Query for Sept. 9th:

Do you typically paint your figures just like the manufacturer sample, (i.e. the box art), or do you get creative?

Rarely. I browse a lot of minis and fantasy/scifi artwork and usually have a good idea of what I want to do. Occassionally I'm stumped and I search for examples of how other people painted the mini I want to work on.

I can't say that I've never followed the box art (or studio paint scheme, where no box exists), but it is very rare.

For some games I will follow an interpretation of official or "historical" paint schemes, but even then I'll usually drift or embellish a bit.

This except I do go historical on US Calvary.

Last minis I can think of getting that even had box art were some major ships for Babylon 5 Wars. I try to paint those as they appeared on the show, which does also tend to match the box art.

Aside from that, I tend to do my own thing.

Normally I just do whatever I feel like.

Sometimes for games I'll try to go with the colours the faction is supposed to be according to the fluff, like my Lion Clan army for Clan War was yellows and browns, and my German tanks will be (if I ever get them finished) Dunkelgelb.

But right now I'm painting Imperials for Star Wars Legion, and I'm trying to get as close to movie accurate as I can. (I mean there is only so much you can do with just black and white anyway.....:poke:). But that is just my choice for the Imperials.  The Rebels will be "inspired" by the movies but I'm not actually trying to in any way match the actual outfits. Maybe the named characters....
But that is more about the universe, not the actual box art, which (I've just checked) is drawings of the characters anyway, not examples of the painted figures.....

I'm really referring to fictional history, rather than real history.

If I was into genuine historical gaming, I would most likely cleave a little closer to history.

@Lord of the Dish Pit I only saw the animated version of the hobbit recently, but I think you hit the nail on the head. I had a super old, battered, hand-me-down copy of the Hobbit as a child and this was the cover.

Subliminal childhood conditioning for the win!

The artist that created that image used on the cover was none other than J.R.R.T.

If you are wrong to think of Dragons as red, you are wrong in excellent company.

Thanks, I didn't know that!

It's interesting that he drew him as a "proper" dragon, rather than the giant wyvern that's in the recent movie adaptations

Unless I want a mini to be particularly recognizable as such, like army factions colours, or classic chromatic dragon designs, I'll do something original.

Though I will generally stick to normal trends. Weapons will more often than not be shades of metallic grey, humans will have realistic flesh tones, skeletons will be bone coloured, etc.

The real creativity comes from large surfaces. Open canvases that just beg to have something extra put on them. Capes, cloaks, large wings, banners, you name it.

box art no.

anything for an RPG is getting painted how ever I feel at the time.

miniature games I usually stick to the general color palette for things that have one for their factions, but don't pay a whole lot of attention to exact markings.

and then sometimes I just go with whatever. like my infinity combined army is blue/purple with green glow  because I none of the official schemes matched at the time.

Never, thus far but I have thought about it for some of the Malifaux stuff I have picked up as I haven't come up with a personal scheme as yet.
