Query for Sept. 10th:

Do you base coat an entire figure first, then go back and add details, shading, etc. —or— do you complete an entire area first before moving on?

I get all the skin painted up first, and then work around the mini completing each part as I go.

Step one is to make sure that paint gets into all of the hard to reach areas, but I rarely base coat the entire figure before I start working the details.  I work by color rather than area, so large figures may be completed in what appears to be a patchwork manner.

I'm pretty much a base coat first painter. It's how I learned and I'm comfortable with it. On the other had when I look at someone who paints in sections I can always imagine me mucking up the completed sections (since I do it enough with my normal base coating....). Probably doesn't help that I tend to base coat figures when my shoulder is acting up and I'm too shaky to do detail work.

It depends, but usually no.  It happens more when I don't have a firm colour plan so getting the bases down first can help before going too far.  Even then, it's usually the larger areas and not the whole figure.

I basecoat everything first, then detail. Too afraid an errant brushstroke from the bigger basecoating brush would ruin all the work if I did it the other way around. The base color may change after I detail an area, but I need to see color all over the mini to know if it looks like it'll work.

I also don't work from inside to out, though I probably should. I just pick the largest area/item and start with that.

It seems to depend on the model, but typically I'll take a hybrid approach.  Whatever winds up helping paint get onto the mini itself..

I usually refer to "base coat" as the white over black layer that some folk would call priming.

I start with the skin & do most all the base colors. The face & skin are finished before any other work is done beyond the base colors.

This is the method I picked up from a Imrie/Risley book when I was first starting to paint. It has worked for me.

I'll basecoat the entire thing first, mostly to see how the colours work alongside each other. I love the idea of finishing an area, but I find it difficult to be that focused. The only exception is when there is a dominant colour on the mini. If that is the case then I'll basecoat the whole thing that colour, apply washes/highlighting and then pick out the details. This happens a lot with Infinity minis for some reason <_<

Query for Sept. 9th:

Do you typically paint your figures just like the manufacturer sample, (i.e. the box art), or do you get creative?

Probably more than 50% of the time I'll end up painting the mini like either the box art or close to what someone else has done. Not exactly, I usually end up changing something, but close enough that anyone familiar with the box art would recognize it for it's inspiration

I'm all over the place. I don't complete anything before moving on, except maybe the face on humanoid figures.

It depends. Sometimes I will do base coat first sometimes I'll do sections at a time. Of course this also all depends on how big the mini is.

Depends on what paints I have out....

and what I'm painting

Vehicles and 15mm figures it's normally the former, 28mm figures I think it's normally the latter, or some mix of the two

hmm

I almost always Do entire figure, getting most of it to table-top then picking our specfic areas and adding details one at a time.

although a human-like face is the first detail I work on.  if its a monster the face could be done anytime.

I go around, and around, and around.

So overall base coat. Then I focus on an area. And while it's drying, I switch and work on another section.

I don't remember ever working on a single part only, and sticking with it till the end. The one exception being during ReaperCon classes, where time constraints and class subject have specific elements to focus on.

I have no confidence that anyone at Reaper reads or cares about what we think.

They do, but this forum is a pretty tiny part of their overall outreach.  It does sometimes get less attention than it perhaps deserves, but compared to the overall social media presence and reach this forum is only a small sliver of the actual community.  Jon has been working super hard, harder than anyone ever, to improve Reaper's outreach and communication across every channel.  I would even say a lot harder than many of you know or appreciate, because he hasn't been treated especially well on here and I find that grossly unfair.  I know how hard he is working for the Reaper community.  Where information has been lacking with regards to Reapercon or other announcements, failure to mention it on here is not, IMO, on him.  He's working the equivalent of like 5 jobs and I'm pretty sure he hasn't slept since 2019.  But those of us who saw that information, like yours truly, could (and should) have exercised some initiative to come here and make sure it was all posted to help give him some relief and also make sure everyone is on board with what they need to know.  In the future, I will make a greater effort to do that.
