Query for Sept. 14 Monday:

14. Would you consider yourself numerate or innumerate?

Um, numerate, though once you start adding letters my basic math skills fail me.

Flying, battling space galleons (except one of them looked like a slave driven galley…oars  and all). The other one had a giant auger for a nosecone. These things fought each other in the sky over a mountain range. Inside the mountains was a super secret base with prisoners in cells, guards! guards! guards! everywhere (who could not shoot their way out of their brightly colored jumpsuits for love or money), falling debris clearly made of bouncy styrofoam, and some heroes who had a guy in a Not-At-All Wookie suit wielding a glowing blue battleaxe tagging along. None of that was the main action. The ship battle was where it was at. The Oars ship used them as laser-zap-barrels. The Auger ship fired that auger like a missile, which narrowly missed Oars ship but crashed into part of the mountain side (and you guessed it) half wrecking the base.

The unholy union between drilling equipment and Space Battleship Yamato is the noble ship Gohten, a prop that was expensive enough to make several appearances, like Commando Cody's flying suit.

numerate, somewhat

considering I work out army lists for my favourite game in my head without the rulebook...

Some say I love math, or am good at math. Just keep the letters out of the picture, and I'm average. It's an okay thing.

No, I'm not providing a concrete answer, math is integers and numbers and whatnot, not construction materials! ::P:

Numerate.  Although I let the computers do most of it now....

Except in the realm of miniatures.  There even basic math breaks down.

How long will this take to paint?  My answer: 4-5 hours. Reality: Range of 2 months to infinity.

If I take 20 Bones figs and 20 metal figs and put them in a box, how many are in the box?  A: 20

If I have X figures, and paint Y figures a year, how many Kickstarters per year should I back?  A: All of them.

Weekend Queries for Sept. 12 and 13:

12. Are there TV shows or movies, that you have seen, where you now only remember one stunning or thrilling scene, but not the plot, or the title of the film?

13. Can you describe the scene(s)??

All of can think of is some sci fi kung fu movie where a large passenger jet landed in the mountains and turned into a giant robot just before touchdown. Lots of people got punched. Never figured out if the robot was an alien or a transformer rip off (which I guess is still an alien). I cannot remember the name of the film and I don't remember enough of it to google it.

Numerate. Strangely enough I was never any good at math in high school. Then several years later the concepts began to make sense. Ended up getting a Masters in economics, taking it as far as econometrics and optimization. Now a days if I have to do that kind of math I just write a line of script for SAS and let the computer do the math for me. I still do some original math though. In recent years I developed a set of simple equations to determine the amount of credit awarded to ecological restoration projects that have failed a portion of their goals and requirements through no fault of their own. We've used it on a couple of long term projects and now have a team working on user guidance for this methodology. Hopefully we'll have it rolled out to the general mitigation community in the next year or so. Once that is done my next big math project is using the cost of water treatment from areas downstream of hydrologically connected wetlands as a proxy for economic loss associated with changes in natural landscape features. Going to have to find a grad student at the nearby university looking for something publishable to do most of the heavy lifting on the math for that one though because it's unlikely I'll have the time to get it all done by myself. I could go into details, but I don't want to bore any of you good folks to sleep.

I'm reasonably numerate in basic math.  Maybe.

If we're talking basic skills, yeah I'm ok.

When math stops being basic and starts including triangles, letters, and greek symbols that's when you lose me.

Definitely numerate.

I've demonstrated it with the amount of math classes I've had to take in college and university. Arithmetic, algebra, geometry, trigonometry, calculus, statistics and probability, applied engineering mathematics, goblin, etc. And I still frequently watch mathematics YouTube videos.

The more advanced the class was, the more it seemed only to exist as a requirement for the next math class. I have yet to use an inverse Laplace transform in my career. Trigonometry and statistics on the other hand are always used.

12!

Now I wonder if you're excited about the number "12", or if you meant "479001600" (12 factorial).

Yes, I am especially good at mathemagics.

You mean 20!

See? He gets it!

Or maybe I'm still confusing passion about "20" with a huge number.

Numerate. Although once you get past geometry and start going into trigonometry you lose me.

Yes.

Seriously, I'm generally good at solving equations, however, knowing which equations should be used in in which situations is where I get lost.

I love Geometry though, and I largely credit that to the RPG Traveller.

Welcome to Getting to Know You, NOVEMBER 2020 Edition.

The rules as they currently stand ( we all know most of you rebellious lot will ignore most of it, but one can try)

      1. Every day, or so (unless I am out or ill or something) I will post a question.
1.5. Should I be unable to post a question for the day a crack team of deputy quisitors, former quisitors, and random forum members are all chomping at the bit to step in and post one...
      2. In theory there is a 24 hour span to answer that question before the next question is posted.
2.5. (Rule 2 is the most frequently ignored rule.)
      3. Questions are going to be posted between 8:00 hours and 12:00 hours CET. ( Central European Time)
      4. Everyone is encouraged to suggest future questions to be posted via PM to me...
      5. You do not have to answer every question to play...
      6. If a question is TMI or N/A simply wait for the next question.. ..or post that you decline to answer (clues regarding why can be fun...unless TMI).
      7. Weekend questions will usually take the form of two or three day quests, starting on Friday or Saturday.
