Query for Sept. 14 Monday:

14. Would you consider yourself numerate or innumerate?

Numerate.  I mean, my long-ago degree is in engineering, and I can do small number math in my head.  When people used to carry coins and pay for purchases with cash, I could hand the clerk exact change including sales tax on small purchases (e.g. a couple of books)  before they rang it up, which puzzled them a lot.

We also play Charge! for horse and musket wargames, a fun 1960s set of rules from England that assumes that most people can do fractions in their heads, so that you can throw 3 and 5/8s dice and cause casualties equal to a quarter of the result (halved for long range, say, and halved again for cover...) rounding remainders of less than 1/2 down to 0, but remainders of 1/2 or more up to 1.

Given all the math I've taken, I'd lose my physics degree if I said I wasn't numerate. Calculus, differential equations, vector analysis, linear algebra... the crazy symbols they invented for quantum mechanics so they didn't have to write out long equations. That's why when in organic chemistry I was like "wait, you want me to essentially just draw pictures, and the hardest math is counting atoms and electrons? This is f'n awesome!"

12!

You mean 12 factorial, right? 12 x 11 x 10 x 9 x 8 x 7 x 6 x 5 x 4 x 3 x 2 x 1 = 479,001,600

Yes, I know... this rightfully applies to me (and I will never get tired of this meme):

Um, numerate, though once you start adding letters my basic math skills fail me.

I always told people that math is like learning a new language. You just have to learn what each part means and how to string it all together coherently.

If we're talking basic skills, yeah I'm ok.

When math stops being basic and starts including triangles, letters, and greek symbols that's when you lose me.

What she said.

Sadly, my math teachers were more interested in berating the trouble makers in class than teaching the shy girl math.

I used to let my tutees/tutored students go nuts with colored chalk... it makes everything better. Make sure Sephy gets some for her sidewalk mathematics.

Since we're talking math, did anyone else read this story about dustless chalk originally from Japan? I never knew such a thing existed, all my professors either kept it to themselves or didn't know either. I want to try some, but I have no use for it now.

Numerate.

Got an A in calculus 3, a B in differential equations.

During WoW Classic, I used calculus to come up with a way to prioritize mage gear based on contribution to damage done.  It was stupidly complicated, but it worked.

I like to think so but I feel like I'm getting dummer by the day. Basic multiplication/division and geometry I can do easily. At one time I was good with low level physics. Now my oldest taken high school calculus and I can't help him at all. My only experience with it was 25 years ago when in university when I realised that I don't really enjoy more advanced maths and physics. Spent almost a month in a class with a very enthusiastic calculus professor. He'd write a ton of stuff on the board at maximum speed and before we could even copy it he'd go, "Oh, I got carried away. This isn't what we needed to look at right now!" and then erase it. Me and the other people I knew in the class gave up and dropped it because we didn't have a clue what we were trying to learn.

Numerate, at least I used to think so. <_<

Then last weekend happened…

@Glitterwolf might ^ be ONE THE FEW who noticed but as the Glorious Leader of W.O.O.F great things are just expected, ya know?

(Also, Looks like @ManvsMini fixed it in his post without commenting.)

I was asking about the ability to mess with numbers and kinda keep them sorted @malefactus

I have no idea what you are asking.

Or dumber. But I like your alternate spelling…

Dumber could be reserved for the concept involving speech  "a diminishing or reduced ability to speak". As in "Dumb" = Speechless.

But,

Dummer could be reserved for the concept of becoming "progressively less less intelligent or increasingling idiotic".

So last weekend I never got the numbers of the days correct. The first attempt had it "…11, 12, 12, 13…" as quoted by Chaoswolf. I noticed something was not right and I attempted to fix it and came up with: "…11, 12, 11, 12…" that was the version Malefactus quoted.

I can't count. ::(:

And it looks like most of you can't either! Or, you are all too nice to say anything……. yeah, we'll go with that.

Tommorrow:  no numbers.
