I'm not a fan of his, but Marilyn Manson's cover of Sweet Dreams by the Eurythmics is incredible. He makes it creepy as hell.

Just reminded me of the Inkubus Sukkubus 'cover' of Just Can't Get You Out of My Head by Kylie Minogue.

changes it from this happy pop song to something a bit more obsessive

I completely forgot one of my favorite covers! For those who were fans of the tv show Scrubs, the hospital lawyer Ted and his a cappella band did a cover of Outkast's "Hey Ya!", though they did add a guitar so it isn't truly a cappella anymore

The Blanks - Hey Ya!

I find this one far superior to the original.

Query for Sept. 15:

What song cover/remix do you enjoy? Do you like it better than the original?

So very, very many.

To keep things clean, I’ll define covers as songs made famous by one artist with a later rendition by another artist made after 1970.  Back in the 1960’s, it was not uncommon for different artists to perform the same song.  (Or maybe it’s a feature of some of the artists from back then I listen to.)

Okay, list of covers I prefer over the original (or what I believe the original to be)...

Bond, “Kashmir” (over Led Zepplin - sorry, just don’t like the vocals)

Orgy, “Blue Monday” (over New Order - Orgy’s version is... angrier?)

Hybrid, “I Won’t Back Down” (over Tom Petty - Hybrid’s version slows the tempo and adds depth, turning the song into a passionate statement of defiance)

Covers I enjoy:

Alestorm, “In the Navy” (The Village People - no lie, I heard the preview for this on iTunes and broke out laughing)

Chiasm, “Major Tom” (Peter Schilling)

Collide, “White Rabbit” (Jefferson Airplane)

Hybrid, “Enjoy the Silence” (Depeche Mode)

Hybrid, “Experiment IV” (Kate Bush - Hybrid’s version is more melodic but I think it misses some of Kate Bush’s passion)

Remixes?  Also several... but I’ve run out of time to list them.

What is the difference between a cover and a remix?

A cover song is one that is performed by a singer or a band who is not the original artist.  Usually no significant changes are made.  For example, the Pentatonix cover of Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody.

A remix involves altering the original work by rearranging or changing parts of it.  An example of that would be this hip hop version, in which the lyrics and music are changed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MV1GlpwCG0I

Apart from the fact that I would tend to exclude items where there are significant changes to lyrical content, these are my definitions as well.

use of an original work within a hip-hop or other song I would refer to as sampling, this includes adding new lyrical content over the original recordings - re-recording in a different style is still a cover

My example of a remix would be:
Collide - Euphoria

Collide - Euphoria (Emirian Mix)

A cover is performing/recording a song and staying as close as possible to the original version, a little personal touch is allowed.

A remix is adding other sounds / instruments maybe even extra lyrics to the original song.

See I'm of the opinion that a cover can be done in a different style to the original song, as long as it's done well.

e.g https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YUOuJJdjFHc

of course, by definition, that means that any hip hop/rap rendition is blasphemy as @Glitterwolf pointed out ::P:

I absolutely love this cover of Genesis's Land of Confusion. It sounds like the soundtrack to the most epic movie trailer EVER, as well as being the theme song of 2020

(The original isn't too bad either, btw)

This sounds about right to me.

And both differ from a parody, which for me strives to match the sound of the original while changing the lyrics, presumably in a humorous way.

Of course there tend to be fringe cases, like the Muppets version of Bohemian Rhapsody, which is pretty much a cover, but "because Muppets" may slip into parody.

And Weird Al's Polkas, which would be, ummm, a cover medley that you might consider a remix, with humorous tendencies?

I'm not sure where you put "covers" like Luthor Wright and the Wrongs country version of Pink Floyd's The Wall (yes, the whole album) which they took somewhat seriously (and is really quite good if you haven't heard it), or Hayseed Dixie's "A Hillbilly Tribute to AC/DC" which is a bit more on the humorous side of covers (their version of Big Balls is pretty good.....).

FTFY  Hip hop is not music and never will be.

I differ.  A cover is the song by another group.  A remix is the same recording changed in editing the way the multiple tracks are mixed to create the stereo or mono recording. It can be changed by synth or addition but the main part is the original recording.
