Query for Sept. 18:

What barbecue sauce is your preferred brand? (and please tell why...) If you can’t stand barbecue sauce, what was it that caused you to dislike it?

It's been forever since we made BBQ but we always went with whatever the recipe is in the Joy of Cooking Cookbook (8th Edition) but replace the ketchup with tomato sauce and tomato paste and throw in something a little spicy for bite.

There's so many I've had, I hardly remember names. I rarely buy it, yet we always seem to have a bottle in the fridge, and it's always a different brand. I don't crave bbq sauce, but in the summer I'll use it if we make pulled pork or pulled chicken sandwiches.

The only brand I do remember is one my sister brought to us from Memphis. It came from a restaurant called Central BBQ, and it was pretty good.

Story time:

My dad went through a phase about two years ago where he put bbq sauce on everything that was chicken. Tenders, nuggets, anything we made in the oven that had been frozen, bbq went on it. So one night, despite knowing the answer, I asked him if he wanted any ketchup or mustard on his chicken tenders. "No, I'll have bbq sauce," and he turns to the fridge to get it. A couple minutes later, I glance at his place and notice that his sauce, covering all of his tenders, looks very watery. I ask him if that sauce is still good, and he says it tastes funny. I look at the bottle he used, and it's not bbq sauce: he grabbed a bottle of balsamic vinaigrette and dumped it on. Never even checked the label (or noted the viscosity of the bottle contents).

That ended dad's bbq phase...

At home, we buy Sweet Baby Ray's.

But I've been to a lot of different BBQ restaurants that can top that with their house sauces. I'm just too cheap/lazy to buy them for home.  Jethro's here in Des Moines has some good sauces,  the small Bandana's and City BBQ chains do, too

Bullseye. A lot of the sauces I've tried tend to be too sour and that's my least favourite flavour. Like Whitewulfe I tend to put bullseye on a lot of things.

Dinosaur BBQ, out of Syracuse, NY. Phenomenal BBQ joint, and the sauces are on point.

I use both their primary bottled sauces, the original (Sensuous Slathering) and the garlic honey. I used to use a lot more Wango Tango (a hotter sauce), but tailed off of that, as the fiancee doesn't do hot food. The Mojito is a nice change-up, too, one of my favorite for poultry. The Creole Honey in the pic hasn't popped up in my supermarket yet, may have to poke around for it. Git you some!

I typically get one of two local brands, Jack Stack or Head Country when I smoke at home. They have good flavor without being loaded with sugar/corn syrup or pepper (or other non-BBQ flavors).  I have a jar of Spring Creek's sauce from last time I was in Texas.

While I like spicy food I don't like chilies on my BBQ.  If someone has spent all day preparing succulent smoky meat I want to be able to taste that, and not have it overwhelmed with sauce. Especially with the prices on a plate of ribs or burnt ends. If I want to taste sauce I can stay home and drink it from the bottle.

I don't use BBQ often anymore, but I tend toward Bullseye Hickory when I do. The best ones are from the competition BBQs that roll through here once a year.

I'm not dedicated to any particular brand. I do dislike quite a few that claim to be "Hawaiian" bbq sauce with pineapple in it. I love pineapple, but most of those sauces just have an off sweet flavor that just is not good.

I got a fresh answer.

I'm making pork chops in the slow cooker this weekend. I was out of BBQ sauce and went to buy some. Very poor selection locally.

Staying true to my previous answer, the least expensive one will do the job. KRAFT sauce, hickory flavored.

I dislike the vast majority of BBQ sauce. Too sweet. Good BBQ meat should have enough seasoning and be cooked well enough that none of this sauce nonsense is necessary. Sauce just tries to make up for subpar cooking.

Now if you use it as a rub while cooking, that's different, but it should never be used alone. You need some salt and spices in there too. Maybe a little liquid smoke or vinegar or worstershire.

I don't have a particular favorite. There are a lot that I like and I'm always open to trying a new one.

Query for Sept. 17th:
Tomorrow (the 18th)  is national (**US?) cheeseburger day, how do you like yours?

Cheese: Real, not that plastic 'American' broccoli. Past that, I'll try anything.

Someday, I really wanna try a brie burger.

Meat: Mammalian. Cooked, but unburned. If there's ANY black, it must be thrown back.

Overall: the ratio of cheese to meat most be equal to the cheese/meat ratio in the spelling of the word "cheeseburger". None of this one-slice-and-call-it-good laziness.

That does sound a bit dodgy.

The rules: as they were last month (in addition to all regular forum rules) except where I sneakily changed them:

      1. Every day, or so (unless I am out or ill or something) I will post a question. †
1.5. Should I be unable to post a question for the day, a crack team of deputy quisitors, former quisitors, and random forum members are all chomping at the bit to step in and post one... ††
      2. In theory there is a 24 hour span to answer that question before the next question is posted.
2.5. (Rule 2 is the most frequently ignored rule.)
      3. Questions are going to be posted sometime before 1 AM Reaper time (US Central).
      4. Everyone is encouraged to suggest future questions to be posted via PM to Talespinner or Morihalda…
      5. You do not have to answer every question to play...
      6. If a question is TMI or N/A simply wait for the next question.. ..or post that you decline to answer (clues regarding why can be fun...unless TMI).
      7. Weekend questions may take the form of two or three day quests, starting on Friday or Saturday.
      8. Pix always welcome.

The first question will need to be posted after a brief (10 minute) pause to foil the merging of posts.
The footnotes, because I can't resist doing †††footnotes:

      † I will aim for 0600 Reaper/Nottingham time.
††  If subs and backstops could wait until 11AM in Reaper/Denton's timezone to see if I remember.
      ††† …because I re-remembered how to do the dagger ( † ) symbol.

      Goal

The purpose of this thread is to gather in one place all the visual answers to the oft recurring question, “How big is Reaper miniature __ __ __ __ __ ?”

That question comes up about once a week; but always about different models. This thread is meant to serve as a place for those foolish kind souls who decide to answer in detail with a photograph to post their work.

      Guidelines for such photographs

“...Posed in front of an inch or centimeter grid, and / or with a ruler laid out in front of, above, or behind them, and / or next to other Miniatures for comparison...” Comparison pics are the most useful because the numerical height of a model doesn't always tell you how bulky it is, or how exaggerated the features might be. Common objects like paint dropper bottles, figure bases, and specific Miniatures like Sir Forscale (76543) can acquaint the viewer with size of a new Mini, especially while standing on a grid. The best comparison shots are like police line-ups: several miniatures side-by-side in front of an easily-read scale.

@Pingo @redambrosia and @lowlylowlycook contributed most of the wording in the preceding paragraph (which I edited a bit).
