GETTING TO KNOW YOU.... SEPTEMBER 2020 …GTKY

Did you know there are 300 different sign languages? Today is International Sign Language Day (so sayeth the UN). Can you sign? If so in which one/ones?

I did not know that. I don't know any sign language other than rude gestures, my wife knows a little American sign language. Enough to spell words if necessary. Fun story, several years ago I gave some friends a sign language for your baby book as a baby shower gift. About a year later I'm at dinner with them and their kid starts making signs for food and drink. I thought the book was neat but didn't expect it to work. Apparently it does. Last year we were all at a Pirates versus Mets baseball game and his parents left him alone with us. By the time they got back their three year old had learned some great new signs and when to yell at the ref. We're not allowed to be alone with their kid at ball games any more.

I used to know some sign language (ASL) when I was younger as my paternal grandparents were both deaf.  They both read lips, so I never got really proficient.  I have lost most of what I knew in the 20+ years since their passing.  I know several hand signal of a profession variety (mostly for signaling crane operators) but I'm pretty sure those don't classify as a language.

I did not know there were 300, but I knew there were many different sign languages.

I cannot sign, but Lady Klarg is pretty fluent in American Sign Language (ASL), and works with institutions for deaf education as part of her day job.

I know of the ASL. Occasionally I see charts to remind me of the alphabet.

But overall, I know of no sign languages that are not popular common gestures.

Maybe if I was Italian?

I did not know, but I am not insanely surprised that there are that many (considering the amount of countries, languages and dialects in the world).

I never learned any form of sign language. In grade school there were a few kids who had been deaf since birth, but I never had any classes with them, so we never interacted, so no opportunity to learn anything. Freshman year of university, the administration had finally decided that ASL could count as foreign language credits, but immediately after being told that we were informed there was currently a 5-year wait-list to get into the introductory class.

I know a smattering of ASL, and have forgotten more than I now remember.  My Son is right now enrolled in an ASL class, so I may do a little learning along with him.

I can say "Oh well" in ASL and that is about it.  And as everyone else I can say "Disapproving Hand" in the 301st sign language universal gestures.
I was going to put this in purple but i thought "Hey this is the truth.

I learned the alphabet in high school.  I am very rusty in it, never got to use it for anything. I could, in relaxed company, probably misspell a few sentences.

I went and got a Flu Shot.

I actually managed to have a decent Monday up to that point. Getting it was something of a hassle. Then afterward, I felt like I was coming down with the Flu. I just had to curl up in my lair and sleep. Felt like I had a fever, ached everywhere…

:zombie:

Hope you are feeling better now. I thought the vaccine wasn't supposed to make you sick?

I'm pretty good at using 1 finger sign language. Usually involves the middle finger, but other then that no I don't know beyond "I love you".

Very cool!  I know a handful (ha!) of ASL that we used with our kids when they were very little (more, milk, thank you, etc) but my kids sort of bastardized them and we ran with their interpretation.

Due to the diversity of my place of employment, I am learning rude hand gestures from all across the world.

All vaccines can give you symptoms of the virus. That’s a sign that your immune system is working.

It hammered me for about 9 hours. But I woke up at around zero one thirty (01:30) hrs with the distinct feeling I had broken a fever. Then it :upside: was over.

Yay (?) immunity.

I would have guessed that there were a couple of dozen.

I do not know any sign language.

After reading more about it I was fascinated to learn that BSL and ASL are far more different from each other than British and American spoken English.

I have created a link above, within the question, so that anyone that is interested can begin reading where I did.

It is supposed to give you a bad day though. That's what happens when your immune system Does Stuff. For a lot of people it just makes your arm hurt, for others they have to sleep it off like a hangover.

Because one bad day is generally a better deal than one to three weeks unable to get out of bed because Da Flu is sitting on your chest.

      Goal

The purpose of this thread is to gather in one place all the visual answers to the oft recurring question, “How big is Reaper miniature __ __ __ __ __ ?”

That question comes up about once a week; but always about different models. This thread is meant to serve as a place for those foolish kind souls who decide to answer in detail with a photograph to post their work.

      Guidelines for such photographs

“...Posed in front of an inch or centimeter grid, and / or with a ruler laid out in front of, above, or behind them, and / or next to other Miniatures for comparison...” Comparison pics are the most useful because the numerical height of a model doesn't always tell you how bulky it is, or how exaggerated the features might be. Common objects like paint dropper bottles, figure bases, and specific Miniatures like Sir Forscale (76543) can acquaint the viewer with size of a new Mini, especially while standing on a grid. The best comparison shots are like police line-ups: several miniatures side-by-side in front of an easily-read scale.

@Pingo @redambrosia and @lowlylowlycook contributed most of the wording in the preceding paragraph (which I edited a bit).

Happy New Year and welcome to Getting to Know You, January 2021 Edition!

The rules as they currently stand (in addition to all regular forum rules):

      1. Every day, or so (unless I am out or ill or something) I will post a question.
1.5. Should I be unable to post a question for the day a crack team of deputy quisitors, former quisitors, and random forum members are all chomping at the bit to step in and post one...
      2. In theory there is a 24 hour span to answer that question before the next question is posted.
2.5. (Rule 2 is the most frequently ignored rule.)
      3. Questions are going to be posted sometime before 10:30am Eastern US Daylight time.
      4. Everyone is encouraged to suggest future questions to be posted via PM to me...
      5. You do not have to answer every question to play...
      6. If a question is TMI or N/A simply wait for the next question.. ..or post that you decline to answer (clues regarding why can be fun...unless TMI).
      7. Weekend questions may take the form of two or three day quests, starting on Friday or Saturday.

Thank you all for playing along as we get to know the real you... tell me, Malcolm Reynolds, are you familiar with the works of Shan Yu?

The first question shall be posted after a brief pause to prevent the merging of posts.
