To clarify further: the question is about adding noise and SFX to simulate a crowd that is not there, not as much about the particular flavor of Sportsball.

Without sounds such a thing might become a bit dull.

On the other hand, if it sounds too fake it will only be annoying.

So do it, but do it well!

At least you are honest about it. Most people think they are the best driver. I didn't learn to drive until age 21, about five years after all my friends had. Still wouldn't call myself great, but I know where I am comfortable driving (you won't catch me parallel parking on a street in a big city).

It is a good skill to learn though. Have you ever tried driving a golf cart? If you can find a way to ease into driving something small, and work up, it might help you improve, both in skill and in confidence that you can do it.

Nope, never tried driving a golf cart.

My problem was that I found the whole driving thing so boring, I was desperate for something, anything to distract me. If I tried really hard I could probably have focused long enough to pass my test, but I figured I was always going to be an accident waiting to happen, so I didn't bother.

It didn't help that the last driving instructor I had was kinda crazy and wouldn't correct my driving unless we were about to die (I think he was trying to scare me into being a better driver). After a few terrifying lessons full of near misses, kerb-bumps and panic-induced moments of hitting the accelerator instead of the brake, I decided this driving lark wasn't really for me.

Inquiry, the 27th of September:

Fake, recorded crowd noise during ***NFL games: Hate it? Dig it? Creepsational? Don’t care?

When I watch a sporting event, I usually turn off the sound. SO I wouldn't have noticed if I was watching a NFL game. I don't follow football of any type, however; baseball & basketball are my sports.

Don't care, I've never really been all that interested in watching football. The last time I watched it with any regularity was when I was in the Navy and a bunch of us would go to spend the evening having a few drinks in a bar that happened to be playing the game.

I also think it's a bit weird; does it somehow help the players to think that there are people watching them?

Truly don't care, but if it acts like a security blanket for the players and crew who otherwise might be weirded out and thrown off their game, then go for it.

Either do it well, or do it blatantly unrealistic. Let's see what it sounds like when Godzilla is a fan of one team, and Mothra the other!

Haven't watched a sports match in ages, and I don't even know how common the practice currently is.

If it were similar to laugh tracks, I wouldn't mind. You hear a crowd's reaction, but never have to see them. But large empty arenas or stadiums just feel sad and lacking. And the ghost crowd noises does make it feel unnatural as a TV viewer.

However, seeing how computer sports games have had fake crowds for ages, I figure it's only a matter of time before we see artificial VR style crowds appear. I'm pretty sure the technology already exists. Prerender a crowd, and play it back during actual games with a few people tweaking the crowd reactions.

Don't care.

Parenting is easier, harder and weirder than you are expecting. You'll do great, that fact that it is on your list makes it so. I have a 10 and a 12 year old, I will soon have 2 teenagers (one of each)... the fear doesnt go away.

Don't care really, don't watch spectator sports. I didn't know they were doing this, I can see why...  silence could be awful for the players, and creepy to watch (ever see Hitchcock's Lifeboat?). But I think it would also have a lot of 'miss cues' and the laughtrack feel that I really hate. Music might be better.

Don't really care as I don't watch many sports. If they want to then by all means.

Much more of a combat sports person, and I will say I have not missed the crowds when watching people fight. While chanting for your favorite fighter is perfectly acceptable, currently when an American goes up against an international fighter I don't have to hear on the screen the disrespectful chants of "USA! USA!" by the drunk section of the crowd; it's not Rocky vs Drago, no need to do that just because the other fighter is from beyond the borders.

Pro-wrestling is admittedly sports-entertainment and not a sport, but that definitely needs crowd participation to have the same feel. Saw some on tv without crowds for a few weeks, didn't have the same feel to it. It didn't take my preferred televised company (not WWE) very long to decide "hey, since we have tested wrestlers backstage just waiting around, let's put them in masks and line the front row with them and let them enjoy the show." It really helped the production.

I've been listening to baseball games on the radio lately and the recorded crowd noise in the background makes it feel more like a normal game than a bunch of guys playing in an empty stadium. It's a bit weird to hear that noise when watching a game on TV and seeing the empty stands though, but only slightly less weird than I imagine a game with no crowd noise would be.

In kind of related news (since we're talking sports, sort of), my favorite baseball team the Cincinnati Reds clinched a playoff spot on Friday! So it looks like I get to listen to at least a couple of more games this season!

I have two Vinyl mats (by Chessex?) that are Jet Black with white (and numbered) hexes. Pretty sure they were meant for Star Fleet Battles or some space game.

Otherwise I have a selection of table cloths. Some are vinyl, some really are cloth. I don’t have as many as “Twenty” but I have at least ten. I know I have grass, desert, water, snow, and I do remember one that was deep purple textured badlands. That one was vinyl, in a weird purple color, with a strong leather/scales/snakeskin faux texture in it.

Sorta wishing I had something better. At least for Frostgrave. You have @Froggy the Great and a skirmish table he posted pictures of on Facebok to thank for inspiring this question.

Summoned, I appear.

Apropos to the topic, the lack of an orb match league has not affected my consideration in the slightest.
