Fake, recorded crowd noise during ***NFL games: Hate it? Dig it? Creepsational? Don’t care?

Necessary.

It is piped into the stadium not for aesthetic reasons, but because you can hear the other team decide what play they are going to do if things are silent.

If they didn't do crowd noise they would need to do music or something.

Ok now I want them to do music...

It's not a great substitute compared to the real thing, but the silence would be deafening if there was no noise. I think that would bother people a lot more, and they're just bringing some normality to the experience. And at least there's a season this year, the CFL cancelled theirs so we have absolutely nothing this year.

I've not watched any sports, but for those who enjoy such I'm glad it's back.  As for playback of pre-recorded crowd noises, I honestly don't know what to make of such. I can see how it could help those who are used to it, and could add to things... But the instant all those empty stands/bleachers make themselves known would definitely put a weird disconnect to things...

Also, for football as most of the world knows it (aka soccer in North America), the bigger question is whether or not they'd have annoying noisemakers in said recordings or not...

I feel the same way about the NFL and other sports the same way I do about herpes. <_<

So... Fascinating in a lab, but ten foot pole status anywhere else, eh?

I tend to view fake crowd noise in sporting events as being much the same as canned laughter in sitcoms,  i.e. more of a distracting irritation than an enhancement.

I'm also not a fan of laugh tracks, especially in shows that rely heavily on them to try and push not so funny jokes as actually funny.  Worse though when it's literally the same audio track played over and over again...

I don't care, as I don't tend to watch ball/puck sports, and when I do I tend to want to hear the commentators. I doubt it would add anything for me.  I might flip to a game for a few minutes to see what it is like.

If it helps the players, awesome.

I got a kick out of the cutouts behind the plate at baseball game clips.

I saw a bit of WWE without fans. That must be very hard for the performers, like filming a play in a an empty theatre.

Luckily my sports of choice all produce their own noise when they press on the loud pedal.

I miss visiting events where that pedal is the main focus..

..Heck, I even miss the F1 races we had here, yet I couldn't afford to go back then.

Weird. Reminds me of animated Batman bits where the Joker has a 'captive' audience  and Harley is running a canned laughter machine.

Hate it. I feel we're missing a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity as fans, to hear more of the on-field noise. More of the calling, more of the impacts, more banter. I'm also bothered by the underlying need to make things feel 'normal', but I understand most humans are not great at change (which makes me sad). It's so artificial, especially when the operators try to react to plays. I can't believe people would rather have some weird fake noise than experience reality.

On the other hand, I believe they are now piping that crowd noise into the stadium. The lack of home crowds has had a pretty big impact in games, the fake crowd noise is capped at 70db, CenturyLink (Seattle) can get up to 130+db. Much easier for the visiting teams to make adjustments at the line and hear the snap count. So at least that aspect of it makes some sense.

The fiancee enjoys the Fox baseball with the fake fans that float around on top of the stands. It's so bad and makes me even more bummed about about the human inability to just deal with reality.

I was going to take up cello at one point, after the art thing ran its course. Still might pick one up, if my career survives the next couple years. I also love the violin, but the position it has to be held is far too awkward for me. The cello allows me to bring over a lot of my guitar skills fairly directly (mostly learning to play tuned to 4ths and bowing).

Parenting...

The fact you're worried about it probably means you'll be fine :poke:

Most important thing to remember is that every child is different, so just because someone says something worked for them doesn't mean it will work for you - listen to everything and pick out the bits that work for you/your child/your family.

For example, a lot of what I've seen says to swaddle babies, well, our eldest just refused to be swaddled (she would get an arm out within about 5 sec regardless of how 'well' she was swaddled).

Oh, and everyone will have advice - don't get overwhelmed by it and don't be afraid to just ignore it!

Including this!

Digital sculpting but I'd settle for the ability to repose 3d models (this of course in the context of them being able to print said models).

As I don't care about NFL (or any professional sport to be honest), a lack of real people shouting has no impact on me.

You don't suppose it has to do with the level of cursing and taunting that would otherwise be heard?  I wondered that today.

That was my hope as well.  Like being on the sidelines at least as an audio experience.

Inquiry, the 28th of September: Inktober is only three days away... Do you have any idea what it is? Did you try it last year / are you thinking of trying it this year?

I know what it is, but I don't participate, I'm no artist.

I do hope someone does a thread for it though, I enjoy seeing other people get their art on.

Don't care.  I haven't watched any game since the early 80's.  Not into watching other people play games; I'd rather use the time to create things or play games myself.

Yes, I know what it is. No, I have never tried it as I would rather put the time in to sculpting.
