Imperial Guard PDF

Recommended Posts

At the moment I'm not exactly starved for projects (I've actually got a long list taped to my desk), but what I really wanted was something quick and easy. Luckily one of the projects on that list fit the bill perfectly so my third Imperial Guard joke squad has started.

Unlike my "Fabulous" squad or even my Tau defectors this is a more nuanced joke. Instead of painting battle hardened Cadiens I'll be painting a squad of the Planetary Defense Force. GW lore is a funny thing whenever comparisons are made as any player can tell you. So while the Imperial Guard especially the Cadiens are "elite" warriors completely at home on the battlefield the Planetary Defense Forces are easily killed cannon fodder living the cushy good life on Imperial worlds. The PDF act as peacekeepers and the first line of defense during any attack and they usually end up dying in droves (not unlike the actual Guard).

The only real difference at least on the actual tabletop will come down to color scheme. I've decided a peacekeeper's color scheme would work well and I've come up with two options. 20200913_231759.thumb.jpg.6ab624362d1dacc35bbbaf4be30cce31.jpg20200913_231743.thumb.jpg.42076ad013aafd89c3012850290ee15d.jpg

I think I prefer the blue tunic with the grey armor, but the reverse could work too. I figure I'll just sleep on it and decide tomorrow with fresh eyes, but I'm open to any thoughts/ideas.

In the real world peacekeeping forces havblue helmets.

The uniforms are standard issue.

If you do that everybody will subconsiously recognize them as peacekeepers.

In this case his headgear could be blue.

On a subconscious level I agree with you and see exactly what you mean. Most people would probably think of the UN helmets.

Unfortunately I know my friends pretty well and I know myself even better. We would all just think of the peacekeeping forces from the Street Fighter movie.1531858896614-amazonjcvd.thumb.jpeg.34be4d3274b97c072dc25ad2c6cfd14d.jpeg

If I do the helmets in a blue I'd be forced to replicate their camo fatigues as well. Not an unpleasant prospect, appealing actually it's just not exactly what I'd set out to do this time.

I think my actual intention was to use a lighter blue more in line with older police uniforms combined with the stark contrast of a darker more modern armor.

Robocop-Lewis-police-jumpsuit-2.jpg.e33d3d3a83b3404ebd6b9de4c90a4759.jpg

This was my starting reference from the Robocop uniforms where I wondered just how cheesy it would look overall if their uniform was a lighter blue while keeping that dark armor.

I've got to hand it to you @Glitterwolf you really got me thinking about my choices on this project way more than I expected too. Thanks for that, but you've also made it nearly impossible for me not to make a Street Fighter squad at some point too.

As for tonight's progress I completed all the blue uniforms and managed to start a bit on the armor and weapons. 20200914_222152.thumb.jpg.22eabdcf205610cb7ae31fd692834b39.jpg20200914_222222.thumb.jpg.443e20c0596d6eaf8191d357e86b56c8.jpg

Well, I for one would love to see a Streetfighter Squad and it would fit in your project.

I'm helping :upside:

Sat down tonight and actually made a lot of progress. The armor and weapons recieved it's grey plus their white and metallic details (I even managed to add "PDF" to all of their right shoulder pads too). The skin also recieved a basecoat and a wash. That right there is way more progress than I expected but I still wasn't finished for the night. I also pushed ahead and added sand to their bases.20200917_232749.thumb.jpg.8d48ab3c180c2e35766237f7df33a8e6.jpg

At this point there is probably more drying time left on this project than actual painting. Not a bad place to stop for the night.

It's a nice change of pace to see some IG that aren't khaki or olive drab! I think you've done a swell job with it.

Thanks; aside from a few odd projects/squads though my army is in the stereotypical Cadien color scheme. Though you'd probably get a kick out of my "Fabulous" squad.20191224_130314.thumb.jpg.531f2a9aa99a34c71160dd26c11d78aa.jpg

After tonight the squad is just about finished. I went ahead and used a black wash just like I did on the rest of my guardsmen. It brought their bright blue down quite a bit, but they still look pretty good and they'll blend a little better with the rest of my army now (which is a plus). The base also received a wash, a highlight, and some flock so they're almost done.

Now I've got a bit of thinking to do as I just watched an old Reaper livestream about painting eyes. This probably isn't the project to try it, but I may give it a go anyway.

I slept on it and really thought about trying my hand at painting eyes on a whole squad. In the end I decided to go for it, but it's up to interpretation how successful I was.20200921_221053.thumb.jpg.173982a6ab3249473ee020e2111f0fe3.jpg20200921_221116.thumb.jpg.bf0f8e961422836ee400ac08f70e2e7a.jpg20200921_221207.thumb.jpg.fba5d80e508f2c23a656bc6d977873b1.jpg20200921_222803.thumb.jpg.0f541e0aa031d5fc21768c478fa21f2f.jpg

I think I'm happy enough with them to keep them as is. It is certainly a tabletop passable first attempt. However the extra detail now has me doubting the "PDF" on their right shoulder pads. They all look pretty rough (hence why I haven't shown them off yet) and the "hidden" detail of the eyes is making me rethink my initial freehand attempt. Why paint "nice" eyes if the very large and noticeable freehand looks messy?

Just like with the eyes I think I'll sleep on it, but the safe bet says I try again.

I went ahead and gave the freehand on the shoulder pads another go and I'm glad I did. Like everything they're better the second time around.20200922_213958.thumb.jpg.eb01ca42a7c2ca6bccbfd094b25ce371.jpg20200922_214029.thumb.jpg.929d5a507f8bf83a87f2b5aa5ace0be5.jpg

After sealing them I can officially call them done.

I'm glad I decided to push myself and try some new things, I think this squad really benefited from the extra time and attention.

I painted some minis from the Kill Team: Rogue Trader box. They are originally a nurglish warband called the Gellerpox Infected, but I will use them in my Swampstalkers army for Kings of War.
The second line in the big unit is made of Titan Forge ogre pirates mixed with parts of the Reaper's Crab Man (SKU:44110). They are all now Butchers, and they also have the dedicated hero for them (Fleshripper, one with the cleaver ). Smaller guys are Horrors, wizards in my army.

I painted this GW's Lord of Plagues as a hero for my Swampstalkers. He is now the Swamp Drinker, one of the Reapers  (the unit I showed recently).

And this Morphus from the (unfortunately) defunct Enigma Models was actually painted few years ago. I found him in my display cabinet and though he would make for a nice Swamp Hunter, another hero for my army.  So, here he is, with just a new base

I bought these 16 converted nurgle warriors for my Swampstalkers army and added two Reaper minis (battleguard golem 77169 and Anval Thricedamned, Evil Warrior 77055) to get 3 bases with 6 warriors each.

This is some variant of the Great Unclean One, called Rotigus. I will use it as Terror in my Swamptalkers. He's a big... fellow…

Another unit for my Swampstalkers  I was looking for a suitable alternative for Scarecrows, the cheapest zombie-like unit in my army. These goblins from the Hobbit game looked like a good choice - gnarly, twisted bodies with some wounds, smaller in size than plaguebearers I used for a slightly stronger unit of blood worms (my other infantry unit). And I got them very cheap, second-hand - they already came primed white to me, which saved some time. Lots of different washes, picked some details (mainly eyes and wounds/warts - both with GW blood effect). Swampy base of course, as this is the main theme for my army. Cut some of the models legs off to create an effect of them rising from the mud.
