The painting room change... 2020 edition

So.  At the start of Reapercon live 2020, my hobby room was a semi organized space, that wasn't really planned out.  I also had not taught online so I had to create an area to do that.  This meant shuffling things around to clear up space for a PC, cameras, class supplies etc.  Post Reapercon I was left with a huge mess, as more shuffling occurred to not only teach, but to take a few courses.  Here are a few shots of my space on the last day of Reapercon...

So... one of my sons had moved out in mid 2019... he had left his room like this.  I called it his long term storage

Thus began a journey to make a space that would be better suited for painting, sculpting, teaching and storing the hoard that is my backlog.  First few days were just getting his stuff out and repainting the room.

Then, my wife helped me with refinishing the floor

Then Saturday, I started moving every thing up to the new space...

Lots of stuff

Wow, it looks Amazing!!! The floor looks especially nice, and I second the recommendation for a chair mat.

I need to this exact same thing. My hobby room blew up due to ReaperCon too, so I now only have about 2.5 square feet of usable floor space due to various boxes and bins and folding tables all over, and it's getting ridiculous.

Yep, that was exactly the state I was in.

Side note: were you watching A Knight's Tale on your monitor?

Watching is a strong term, but yes, it was playing in the background.

I thought I had spotted Alan Tudyk on the screen. Not knocking your choice of background movie, I find Paul Bettany quite brilliant in it.

Yeah, that pretty much sums it up. Not bad, but certain parts make it watchable. For me, it's Paul Bettany and Alan Tudyk. And probably the first time that I'd ever seen jousting represented as a competition, not just the initial charge in a film battle.

At the end of Sunday night, it was done....  love it.  I think I need a name for it...  haha.  Hope you like my journal about this transition.  Took less than a week.

So did you finally name the room?

I notice both Army Painter and Vallejo are selling sets of paints with bottles about half the size of their normal paints.  (Nolzur's Marvelous Pigments and Whiz kids Preminum Paints)

        I generally like that approach.

It provides an opportunity to get a variety of paint colors at a lower price.  Vallejo Whiz kids  sets consist of 40 paints in a plastic case for about $70. I know that there are many colors I like to have handy although I don't use them a lot so a 8 ml  bottle would  be more than enough. And, if I use some of the colors a lot, I can get a regular size bottle when the small bottle is gone.

The Va!!ejo sets consists of Game Color but the AP sets consists not only of repackaged Warpaints but several unique colors that I believe are only available as part of the set so it really is not practical to replace those colors when the small bottle is gone.

But, alas, as much as I like the packaging idea, the paints are Gsme Color which I don't at all and Warpaintt which I don't like as well as Reaper or Citadel.  Still I am hoping the idea catches on.

      Dear forum,

While doing research for my little hermit project (found here) I have been watching a lot of painting tutorials on youtube lately. I came across many techniques using rattle cans or even an airbrush and I would very much like to try some of those (like zenithal lighting or spraying on base coats and varnishes). Getting an airbrush would also be nice...

Here is the problem though: I live in a rented apartment with no dedicated hobby room or even hobby table. There is no garden for me to use and the balcony just got redone this spring - with white tiles. I paint my minis at my desk and use a few layers of newspaper to protect it. Works great - as long as I use brushes, that is.

I can't be the only one with a working space like this. So I am curious: How and where do you spray paint your minis? How do you protect walls and floor from the paint? I am especially interested to hear from all of you without a hobby room or a garden.

      Thank you for your ideas!

So the Carrion Worm is next up on my table. I would like to approximate the way it is painted in the picture but it doesn't have to be exact. Can anyone give me some advice on how to achieve the effects in the picture. Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.  #Help_A_Noob

Hi all, quick question what are some paints you would like to see from reaper?

I would like to see a line of effect paints, such as a few different rust effects, something for a running oil or grease, and a very flat black for soot build up.
