Cell Shaded Battletech

Recommended Posts

I like them. The first one looks strikingly like it stepped out of a classic animation cell.

So now I’m deadly curious.... There were Battletech cartoons?

In the mid ‘90’s, there was a BattleTech cartoon series that lasted 12 or 13 episodes. Where I lived at the time, the local station showed it at 6:30 am Saturday morning.

I’m not sure who has the original material and/or the animation license, so it’s probably lost to the ages.  The 1st Somerset Strikers sourcebook contains info about it.

Anyway, the minis look good!

look up “Battletech the Animated Series” on YouTube.  Someone always has all the episodes up somewhere, but certainly not with license...

And yeah, great paint jobs, they’re right out of the show, from the cheesy colors of the Bushwacker down to the ray traced green.  Excellent idea to fade between the two, by the way.

No guts, no galaxy!

These old Battletech miniatures were painted using some fairly recent techniques I’ve generally seen referred to as “Comic Book Style Painting.”

In addition to normal dark lining, I added dark edging to areas that would normally be the highest highlights on the minis. This creates an interesting cell shaded effect.

These particular minis were painted to match the old (and adequagely cheesy) Battletech Cartoons. Sometimes, they would forgo normal animation to employ then-state-of-the-art computer generated animation with everything outlined in green. This is why these minis are all in a transition state between the two styles.

The pics are not visible to me.

And now they are!

Awesome stuff!

Superb cell shaded look. Love the idea and the execution is top notch. I also saw it with cross hatching. Pretty cool trend.

Yeah, the cross hatching works for the old comic book style (and I remember some really nice busts at Reapercon last year painted this way). Since I was going for '90s cartoon, I didn't do that.

What I'm mostly wondering about is how much contrast can the technique take before it stops working. These minis were all done with relatively low contrast areas so that they'd appear more flat (not completely flat, but more than what is expected). I've seen some done with obvious layers in their shading instead, and that works well too so long as you get the lines super sharp.

I've got a few Starcadia minis that I'm doing right now with lots of really dark black lining and edging, but with my normal high contrast, so we'll see how that turns out.

That idea goes to my client, actually. When he first described it to me, I told him it wouldn't work, that the two styles weren't compatible enough for the transition.

But when I got the minis in hand, I realized I was wrong, so I went with it. We were both happy with the results.

I painted the clan side of the recent Battletech kickstarter as clan novacat. There will be a part 2 when I get more mechs.
      Gladiator

      Nova and madcat

      Mongrels

      Puma and ryoken

      Dragonflys

The Black Widows independent company, part of the mercenary Wolf's Dragoons. In full cheesy-80s-action-movie fashion, they're a Dirty Dozen-style group of criminals and misfits molded by Capt. Natasha Kerensky into one of the most feared fighting forces in known space.

      Command Lance

      Fire Lance

      Recon Lance

And because these are all canon characters, the pilots' names are marked.

Witty title not found.  Honestly couldn't think of one, not even a unit name.  I blame cramped up from assembly paws.  Didn't want to go with "rides again" or something, that feels too silly... or something

A while back another forum member here sent me what I've playfully called a "welcome back to the hobby" package which had a number of things in it, but specific to this thread would be five mechs - A Masakari Prime (aka Warhawk), Black Hawk Prime (aka Nova), Ryoken Prime (aka Stormcrow), Uller Prime (aka Kit fox), and Puma Prime (aka Adder).  Now that I have an extra 3' of hobbying space that I'm hoping will be reserved as a "build-out" area, I figured it was best to get that particular use started out.

But first, a soft lil "farewell, but this is not goodbye" set of pics to the previous use of the space - a hobby I was involved heavily in for over five years, and will return to at some point, but for the time being it just wasn't providing much in the way of joy.  Skip the spoiler if not interested

Okay, now what we're all really here for, the minis.

^As previously mentioned, I have enough to make an initial star of mechs.  For those that don't know BattleTech, a star is what the clans use for their unit sizing.  In this case, it's five mechs.

      ^First three, assembled!

      ^Ryoken/Stormcrow

      ^Blackhawk/Nova

      Uller/Kit Fox

The other two will see assembly once my paws stop feeling so cramped up from holding tiny, tiny pieces and cleaning many mold lines...  In short, things begin.  Oh, and odds are I'll be going with Alpha Keshik for the paintjob.  Sure, it's the "traditional" colour for them, and it's also hot rodder's delight, but eh.  Such is life :P

So I don't know much about Battletech, more of a fantasy guy myself, but I do like these figures which are some Mech Warriors that were sculpted back in the eighties by Bob Charette that Ral Partha just recently re-released.  They have eight per pack with different poses, and I got these first from the Liao Faction/Clan/Family.  Going to eventually get through the whole group and I'll eventually photograph the whole group together, which is why I haven't based them yet.  I've been told these are the pilots for the Mechs and it's very hot in the cockpit, which is why they are pretty scantily clad.

These are eighties Partha, so they are some pretty small  25mm sized figures.  More to come later as I finish them!

      Enjoy!
