Microsoft to acquire Bethesda

Recommended Posts

No all that surprised - Bethesda had a few very expensive bombs over the past few years - Fallout 76 was in the red, and it wasn't until Far Harbor that Fallout 4 turned a profit. (Far Harbor is much, much better than the base FO4.)

Their games have an enormous lead time, and not showing a profit quickly.... yeah.

I'm not sure what this is really going to change to be honest. The "industry standard" seems to be "how can we turn every game into an always-online skinner box to hook us some whales?"

The writing was on the wall when Rockstar figured the GTA online shark cards were an almost endless source of continuing income and everyone else took notice. That pretty much sealed the fate of the idea of the old school offline single player game. Add to that a generation of younger customers who don't know anything more than an always online/ always connected lifestyle providing a deep demographic to chase....and that the earliest predictions I've heard for Elder Scrolls 6 was 2025...

Bethesda shot themselves in the foot one time too many, but the entire industry is following suit and I don't think they're going to learn until it's far too late that strip mining your customer base ensures that sooner or later it's all gonna come crashing down.

But that's been the trend so far of this century, endless remakes, reboots, and milking the 'member berries. Hollywood is feeling the effects of that now, gaming won't be far behind, both rely heavily on franchises that date back to the 90s, and over time have drained them almost completely dry while failing to produce anything that can match that level since the drought of creativity combined with the viciousness of the current culture wars has ensured that in both industries the idea of quality falls far far below other considerations.

Goodbye elder scrolls 6 I guess. <_<

I've read a number of people today who think this will be a good thing for that and future FO games and the like, maybe stabilizing things a bit and pushing them all along. Certainly don't seem to think it won't be coming still, anyway.

Though, yeah, I'm sure ESO is in for a whole new level of milking.

I also think ES6 is going to be helped by this.. as an offshoot of Zenimax, there was never any pressure to speed up development.. going decades between games was okay.. so as long as thats the only pressure MS brings to bear i'll be fine..

I only PC game anyhow so that part doesnt worry me..

I would say this is part of Microsoft's overall strategy of accumulating Xbox content.  It's not that 6 won't be coming, but that it will be an Xbox/PC exclusive and PlayStation owners will be left out.

That’s exactly what I meant.

I remember Fallout 3 being broken on later versions of Windows by the Microsoft Games for Windows launcher.

So you had to bypass the Microsof part to load.

But there is just something about leaving Vault 101, and seeing the Washington Monument on the horizon.

Something that makes me want to grab an assault rifle and kill super mutants!
