lowlylowlycook
Seems like Patreon rivals China in it's distain for IP law.

From what I've read there is a line they need to be aware of as far as keeping on the "fan" and "inspired by" side of things. Battletech has a ton of "inspired by" models out there. As long as they are modeled from scratch and based off the shows or whatever they seem to be fine. It's when they start pulling 3D models out of games that the problems start. Star Wars seems to be the same way as there are a number of SW inspired folks out there that seem to be doing fine (and Disney is not afraid to send out cease and desist orders). The vast majority of the Star Wars stuff are things that you can't buy an official figure for, like the "new order look" troopers, or the awesome "bounty hunter" sets available with many unique helmets and jet packs and weapons. I mostly want a crashed TIE (whichever one that is close to) for terrain, but right now Legion on has a crashed AT-ST and an escape pod available.
lowlylowlycook
Yeah, it wouldn't surprise me to see that kind of stuff on Thingiverse for free. I'm just surprised that "selling" stuff on Patreon manages to get under the radar of even GW and Disney.
Clearman
I think it really just depends on how lucky you are, and who's IP you're creating fan art of. Also, the Dark Realms Patreon got a C&D from Weta for his model of Helms Deep, and it really freaked him out. So I do know people are watching.

Gadgetman!
I woted for the Dragonborn, too... Mostly because I used to play a Drakken Warrior/Wizard/Shaman on Minions of Mirth way back in the mists of time... (Game can still be downloaded, but online play ended when the server died 3 years ago) triple-classing meant a lot of grinding, but... It was so much fun to suddenly cast 'Meteor Impact' while surrounded by enemies, then power though the few that were still standing... (And the Shaman added buffs, some heals, and summoning pets... that could be ordered to attack specific opponents) Edited October 1, 2020 by Gadgetman!

People also seem to like to confuse "haven't gotten caught yet" with "it's legal" You can totally make one thing from scratch for yourself as a piece of fan art and be totally fine. If you start using it as part of your advertisements you are tempting the Gods. Start distributing files of, say, a crashed TIE, even for free, and you are tempting the Gods even more. Start selling the files and you are really asking for trouble. It's probably more the sheer volume of IP violations that ensure a few slip under the radar. You have to be careful with "inspired by" works too, if you are making something that can be recognized as being part of someone's IP you can totally get hit with the C&D hammer. This does vary by the desires of the IP holders too, some are more militant than others. But all IP holders have a motivation to enforce their claims on IP simply because not going after violators actually weakens their claim to their own IP

I was wrong - and today was the last day to download it.... So, I did! If only there was some Adventure Path that I could use it with.... Oh, wait! There is! And then, for a second level encounter... 18 hours ago, TheAuldGrump said: Huh, I could swear that there was a Patreon this month that had a giant holding a church bell, but now I can't seem to find it. *EDIT* Never mind - it was RG Sculpt - who are doing Fire Giants for September - but the model I was remembering was a Frost Giant from a previous month - The Auld Grump Whoa! That's a lass with a story to tell and a song to sing! I have a hammer, and I have a bell, and I have a SONG TO SING all over this land! Not the direction I meant to take this post, but the song TOOK OVER! I gotta get that giantess, she's obviously a character, not a grunt. I know you probably meant her to be a present or something, but I'm not waiting. She is effing AWESOME! 3
