Did Reaper Drop Paint Colors Unannounced?

Recommended Posts

There is something to be said for that. Of course more reliable means they never change their line up, except for GW. I have also heard some distressing reports of dropping paint quality in several other non reaper paint lines.

Having the colors in a lesser quality still beats not having it at all.

I'm hoping the news is something along the lines of new non-fading paint labels, and not another paint line my FLGS won't carry, like they didn't carry HD or anything after about #2300.

Ron mentioned they were going to rotate out colors that were not selling well to allow for some other colors like Rose Gold to be always available.. I'd imagine it's a compromise to keep the number of available SKUs stays at a consistent number.. which only makes sense, with all the new paints Sadie is creating, the upcoming 'Effects' paints they have talked about adding and an airbrush line of paints having been talked about, inventory control is going to just get tougher.  it's no different than how they just quietly stop restocking bones and minis that don't sell.. it just hits harder when a color you use a lot is one of the low sellers..

Yeah, I totally get it.  Ultimately, Reaper is a company (a great company too let me say) but there are tons of logistics when it comes to managing one.  Sometimes hard decisions must be made.  They can't keep making very color they ever made for ever and ever, especially if it isn't selling well.  The only thing is I wish there was some warning so we could have had a chance to order what we want before it is gone.

Having paints quietly drop off the web site is kind of jarring.  I had some stuff in my Wishlist I was going to order soon but can't now.  I would have pulled the trigger earlier if I had known.

Before we jump to judgments lets wait until the statement comes out.

I certainly wouldn’t argue with that. I think the biggest issue for the FLGS is if they already carried one or two other paint lines bringing in a third didn’t make good financial sense. Vallejo has a big footprint and at least half a dozen different lines a retailer can carry, if you commit to that it doesn’t leave a lot of room. Add GW which supports a very specific product and you don’t need anything else. Most Hobby shops aren’t pure game stores and Vallejo and Tamiya plus GW just make a lot more sense for their bottom line.

I think the box sets make a lot of sense because you don’t need a paint rack to support it.

Same here.  My FLGS has limited space, so they carry GW and Vallejo.  They used to carry Reaper figures, but stopped to carry more GW, Nulzurs and Wizkids.

One of the biggest problems I have with a color drop is I make up my own triads.  For example, my Chestnut Gold triad consist of that color, Tanned Leather, and Amber Gold.  So with Chestnut Gold discontinued, I have to come up with a completely new triad, which is more difficult than it sounds.  At least, for an idiot like me.

As was helpfully mentioned, there are some colors that come close to Chestnut Gold, but they are too far away for me to simply slot them into my existing ad hoc triad.

I understand the need to keep inventory SKU’s to a manageable level; I really do.  But Reaper, please just be a bit more customer conscious and give us a month or so to stock up on colors that will be discontinued.  That’s all I’m asking.  To spring surprises like this just causes unnecessary angst.

Yup... Having them silently be discontinued (I'm saying silently, because mentioning it on just Twitch when there's many readily available 24/7 mediums such as the mailing list, Instagram, forums, Facebook, Twitter, and others might as well be silent) without warning makes one... I dunno. Hesitant feels a touch too strong of a word, but it definitely brings back memories of HD being discontinued... At least that one we were given notice, even though it was rather late in the year, and too late for those of us in climates where paint freezing in the mail is a rather likely possibility... And the popular/regularly used ones sold out in like a day...

I can understand the desire to do new, especially with markets changing but some warning is always nice - and warning during times when those of us who live in colder climates but are actually able to buy without taking on massive risks of freezing (trust me, nothing is worse than opening a  box only to find frozen paint. It's frustrating, because it's always the colour you waited impatiently for 2-4 weeks to come in aaaaaand it's frozen, and never the extra you threw in on an "eh, it's getting low" or "that could be neat" colour).

Luckily i was able to get the Redstone Triad I had in my Wishlist off of Amazon.  Hopefully it will arrive in good condition.  I always get direct from Reaper if I can because I never know how long it's been sitting in a warehouse or under what conditions.  I know they would do their best to replace the paints.  I've had nothing but good experiences with Reapers support.  But they can't replace something they don't make anymore.

Let me reiterate, I don't fault them for making changes to their line.  This happens with any company.  Some warning would have been nice, but really, I wouldn't get too down on them.  I still love their figures, their paints, and especially the community.

It's the silent dropping of so many colors that frustrates me. I had three of the missing colors in my "next order" wishlist waiting to be converted to an order, I was just waiting on some early October releases to finish the order. Had I known the paints would have disappeared, I could have split the order.

I hope there will be somewhere to indicate ones we'd like to come back. Peacock Green is one I'm very sad to lose. Several of the missing ones were used during ReaperCon and opened my eyes to their possibilities.

I love Reaper paints, but I've been slowly having no choice but to phase other companies in as my "go to colours".  Ability to acquire them in a reasonable amount of time has been getting harder and harder for us Canadians - few places carry them (or restock when they run out), and this has been something going on for a few years now.

Here's hoping the statement doesn't take too long to come, and comes in multiple forms (and not just a Facebook post).

Since moving to Canada I've been getting less Reaper paints. Increased shipping fees or minimum order for free shipping hits quite a bit. And the local shops don't have Reaper paint, even if they have the figures. A lot of mine I got because I'd pick up a triad each month at the Colorado painting club meeting as a thanks to the shop owner, and that doesn't happen here.

Reaper has a LOT of paints to choose from. Honestly, an absurd amount. I understand keeping it more manageable in size. I do wish they'd be announced. I'm finding that I have my favorites, but use the whole range less. So... I hope my favorites stick around at least. I did just use Soft Blue for a project, although it doesn't come out tons. I really like a lot of the MSP line paint consistency - Reaper does well on having flowier paints, compared to the goop of GW, or the tame-thick of Vallejo and S75. I'll be sad if I can't replace a favorite bottle, but even those don't get used super fast. I can adapt with others if needed. Reaper should know that at least being up in Canada makes it more likely that when I replace a bottle though, it won't be their new alternative to an old favorite. It will be a different brand that is easier to get here, but if the old favorite existed, I'd still go for that one.

I've read the reaper statement and I completely understand.

I am confused about part of the list.  9325-9336 are the new MSP colors from bones V. of those 12 paints, 8 are on the list.  will those 8 be available only as part of bones V?  will they then enter the non-production list?
9325    Carnival purple
9326    Bruised Purple
9328    Black Indigo
9329    Rich Indigo
9330    Wild Violet
9334    Orchid Purple
9335    Lotus Orange
9336    Leaf Bud Green
