When was the last time you pulled an all-nighter? And why?

I don't remember, probably when I was in the Navy. It was probably due to some combination of the following: being on watch, needing to troubleshoot/repair a vital piece of equipment, fire drill, VBSS operations, flight operations, training, or leisure ( I'll just finish this chapter, then go to sleep ).

I wondered if that was today's inspiration.

It would have been over 3 years ago because it would have been at my last job.  Wasn't planned, but we were having data issues with a load that runs at 7, 11, 1, 3 and 7 and guess who was on call? It takes me a good hour to get back to sleep after working on a problem, so.....

Hopefully not a timely question....I start my oncall week at the new job on Monday.....

The last time I pulled an all-nighter was playing D&D almost 20 years ago.  We looked up and were curious why there was light coming in from outside and it was the sun that had come up...  oops!  I was supposed to head over to my girlfriend's house (now wife) when I was done and she was up most of the night worried when I didn't show up.  :ik_oops:

The Spring of '16; Cap'n John & I drove through the night on the last leg of our road trip North. It cast a pall over the trip.

Been a while. Probably a gaming session some time in the last decade. I seem to remember stumbling out of my buddy's basement and hearing birds and seeing a bit of sun on the horizon at least once in that time.

A few during the lockdowns because I don't have circadian rhythms and enjoy the quiet of the night.

Previous to that, I worked for years on 3rd shift and prior to that my career as a musician led to many, many sunrises.

A few months ago.

My housemate was feeling too poorly to get to bed to sleep, and since this normally results in a hospital trip in the wee hours of the morning (the time before this, it turned out she had double pneumonia), I stayed up just in case. Fortunately it wasn't anything serious.

An actual all nighter as in no sleep until late morning? Maybe 16 years ago the last time I stayed up all night drinking and visiting with some old friends. Just a very late night? Been many with the kids being sick or just not able to sleep. Last time was about a week ago with my wife being upset about her mom's health we stayed up until 3 am talking and then I couldn't fall asleep for another hour or so. Getting up at 7 wasn't a lot of fun. And the day before that I couldn't sleep so was up late watching the 70s Battlestar Galactica. Can't go days on only a couple hours of sleep like I used to. Now I feel perpetually tired even when I do sleep ok.

Magic pre-release at the game store when I was in college. They didn't start until midnight and I did well enough to stay until 5. I had class at 8, so I figured I'd just go to class. I was so miserable the whole day. Interestingly, I never pulled an all nighter to write an essay or study...

Sometimes feels like I do it all the time, but I know I'm not.

The last all-nighter I remember is from a couple of years ago. 7-month old Molly had a chew toy that made noise, and the person who was supposed to be watching her on the couch didn't pay attention as she ripped it open to get at the noise-box, which used a lithium ion battery. We found the chew toy and the box cracked open, worried that she had swallowed the battery because we couldn't find it, and rushed her down to the nearest animal hospital, an hour away. This was at 10pm on July 3rd. X-ray showed that sure enough she had swallowed it, and they had to call in surgical and gastro specialists to put her under, and snake some grabby-claw thing down her esophagus to get it before it worked out of her stomach (otherwise they would have needed to operate on her).

I don't remember anything else about the 4th of July that year other than the waiting, worrying, relief and crashing once we got her home around 7am. All battery-requiring chew toys are banned from the house.

I lose a lot of sleep for my animals, in retrospect.

When was the last time you pulled an all-nighter? And why?

I've been almost fully nocturnal the last few months, I can't remember the last time I actually stayed awake a full day and slept at night. Usually pass out around noon-2pm and wake up between 7-9pm. Years of working 2nd shift have probably screwed up my sleep cycle beyond repair.

But on the other hand, I'm not paticularly fond of bright daylight anyway, and the social isolation that came with spending most of my working years on evening shift, while hellish for a younger me, is also probably the reason that I've felt no real "cabin fever" at all this year from the lockdown/quarantine.

Not sure college?  1996ish

I remember watching the sunrise with a girl. talking till dawn is an excellent first date.

I learned that even 2 hours of sleep is better than nothing for me.  Even with two kids,  I always slept part of the night.
