UPDATE 10/19: We are doing two rounds of sign ups. The assignments for the first round were sent out on 10/18. Any questionnaires received after that date will be part of the second round. The deadline for the second round will be 11/13. Updates to the rules due to this change are in green.

Yes, it seems too early to start this but with how this year has gone I thought to give you guys as much time as I could. Also this will give you a slight chance to utilize Reaper's October specials and/or any specials they do next month.

What is Secret Sophie, you ask?

Well, it's a lot like Secret Santa, with a more attractive (albeit more dangerous) delivery person!  (For those not in the know, Sophie the Succubus is Reaper's mascot.)  This is the time of year for Reaper forumites to give a little holiday cheer to each other.

Unlike most of the exchanges we do on the forums, this will have two categories

- miniature and gift exchange and gift-only exchange.

Round 1: Signups will run from October 4th to October 16th, with the assignments going out by end of day October 19th.

Sign ups for Round 2 will run from October 19th to end of day November 13th, with assignments going out by end of day November 16th.

If you've never done an exchange before, how it works is like this:

  • Everyone who is interested PMs me (SGHawkins09) with the questionnaire below filled out by the deadline.
  • The organizer (SGHawkins09) then matches you with a person to whom you will send your gift/mini, and another person from whom you will receive a gift/mini from in return (sometimes it's the same person).
  • Halfway through the exchange, you'll need to send the organizers a WIP.
  • You have until the deadline to send your gift/mini out.

This exchange is based on trust.  Please be respectful of the fact that someone else is investing their time, money and energy into painting a mini for you.  I am simply the organizer, but I will do everything I can to make sure that everyone who paints a miniature receives one.

The Rules (tl;dr version)

  • Gifts should be primarily new, Reaper-branded presents.
  • Exchanging painted miniatures is optional.
  • Fill out the questionnaire below and send it to me via PM.
  • Painters must post a Work In Progress (WIP) image of your mini under a spoiler tag to this thread by December 29th.
  • The deadline for non-painters to mail their items is December 21st.  The deadline for painters is January 31st.

Full Rules

  • Decide whether you are doing gift and miniature exchange or gift-only exchange.
    • "Gifts" are Reaper paints, unpainted miniatures, or other Reaper painting supplies.  Recommended dollar value of gifts is $25 or less.
    • The miniature exchange is where you paint a Reaper miniature for someone and mail it to them.  If you want to paint more than one miniature, you may do so.
    • Reaper minis are the focus. If you want to paint more than one miniature, you may do so. If you wish to include other gifts for your recipient, you may do so, but please keep them small.  The focus of the exchange should be a Reaper product.
  • Fill out all the appropriate sections of the questionnaire below and send it to me via PM.  Please fill out the current version of the questionnaire, Please don't just send an old one, as questions may have changed.
  • Please don't contact your partner unless they have listed themselves as okay with contact. I've included it on the questionnaire, so you'll know who wants to keep it secret and who doesn't.
  • You will need to acknowledge your assignment message and/or post or message me that you have selected a miniature by November 13th. Basically, if I do not hear anything from you once the assignments go out, you will be dropped, and your recipient will be reassigned as part of Round 2. I really do not want to do this but there have been too many instances in the past of radio silence once assignments go out. Round 2 participants will need to acknowledge your assignment message and/or post or message me that you have selected a miniature by November 30th.
  • In order to encourage people to start painting early, you will need to post a Work In Progress (WIP) image of your mini under a spoiler tag to this thread by December 29th.  The mini should be at least base-coated by this time.  If you don't post a WIP by this point, I may have to demote you to gift-only or drop you from the exchange.  Please don't make me do this.
  • Try really hard to get your miniature out by the deadline.  Let an organizer know if you are going to be late.
  • Please post in this thread once you have received your miniature from your partner. We all love seeing what everyone did and it serves as an acknowledgement that you received it.
  • In the past some people have wanted to send food - please verify allergens, etc. with your partner before proceeding.
  • If you are mailing internationally and plan to send more than just miniatures/paint, you must contact your recipient to get any "bonus items" approved.  We don't want any trouble with customs.  As an example, plant matter or powders can cause a lot of trouble.
  • The organizers (SGHawkins09) can help facilitate any anonymous conversations you want to have with your partner.
  • Have fun!

Deadline

The deadline for acknowledging your assignment is November 13th for Round 1 and November 30th for Round 2.

The deadline for mailing gifts is December 21stThis is for the gift only participants, painters can send the gifts separate and earlier than the painted figure but it is not required.

The deadline for a WIP photo is December 29th.

The deadline for mailing exchange miniatures is January 31st, but it's even better if you can get them out by Christmas.

Assignments Deadline
Round 1 assignments have been sent. The organizer will send the assignments for Round 2 by end of day November 16th.  Please let me know if you're interested by end of day, November 13th.  I can't make any guarantees if you're late, but I will try to make arrangements.

Exchange Assistant
It is just me (SGHawkins09) this time so be patient if you send me a message or post a question, I will get back to you as soon as I can.

Secret Sophie Exchange Questionnaire - Examples and Notes

-Contact Information-
Name:  Forum Guy
E-mail: Forum Guy at emailservice dot com

Notes: This is backup contact information in case we can't contact you via forum PM.  The organizers will not share this with anyone, and we'll only use it as a last resort.
Address:  1234 my street .
My town, My province or state

                  (Postal code) or (ZIP code)

                  My Country

Notes: Remember to include your zip code and country.

Please format this correctly for your country in case you have an international partner.

-Gift Information: Inbound-
What are you interested in receiving? Metal or Bones fantasy monsters
Examples: metal/resin/bones, scenic elements, Dark Heaven Legends/Chronoscope/Warlord/Pathfinder/Savage Worlds, paints
Other gift preferences? I love peppermint but hate licorice

Some people like to include other holiday related gifts, this would be were you could not if you like or dislike stuff related to that. Some things that are commonly asked about are candies, cookies, hot chocolate, tea, etc. If you note something here, it is not a guarantee you will get something extra as non Reaper items are optional.

-Painted Miniature Information: Outbound-
What can you paint?  Fantasy PCs or monsters
Examples: fantasy, sci-fi, monsters, PCs, women, undead, demons, etc
What do you like painting the most? bugbears and orcs
Notes: if possible, the organizers will try to match you up with someone who wants this thing, but if we can't we'll fall back to what you "can" paint

-Painted Miniature Information: Inbound-
What do you want to receive?  Fantasy enemies for my players to fight!  Monsters or human(ish) are both fine.
Examples: mouslings, necromancers, warriors, dual-wielders, etc
What DON'T you want to receive?  No nudity please.  Also, I have plenty of goblins so I don't need more.
Examples: gross, nudity, undead, kobolds, animals, etc
What material do you want to receive?  I'm fine with any material
Notes: Reaper miniatures come in Bones, resin and metal
Do you have a particular color scheme in mind?  No preference.
Notes: If you're asking for a miniature to be used in army, you can ask your partner to match the colors.
What style of basing would you prefer? Plain or basic - I will use these miniatures in my PFRPG games.
Examples: round or square preference? Unbased, plain base (simple black base), basic base (standard sized base with some scenic elements), or scenic base (fancy base not really suitable for gaming)
Please give your partner some inspiration, especially if you have very few preferences above.
I'm starting the PFRPG Adventure Path "Jade Regent" soon.  Try painting non-human skin tones.  My favorite color is blue.  "Spring has sprung!"

Notes: Consider this a non-binding word of inspiration for your partner.  If they're stuck and can't figure out what to paint, maybe this will help them.  No need to repeat your preferences above.  You partner may ignore this question if they already have an idea from the your previously answered questions.
Examples: Are there any books or movies you've enjoyed recently?  Is there a challenge or technique you'd like your partner to try?  How about some song lyrics or a quote from a book?

-Personal Information-
Will you ship internationally? Yes
Notes: Be aware that postage costs will be higher than domestic postage.  If you mail internationally, you will need permission from your partner to include other gift items so that we don't run afoul of customs.  Most participants in these exchanges are located in the USA.
Would you be willing to have multiple exchange partners? Yes, I love painting!
Notes: If yes, specify if there is a limit (though it is unlikely we'll ask you to do more than 2)
Would you like to know who is painting for you? No
Examples: Yes, No, No Preference
Notes: If you say yes, your preference will be communicated to your partner.  It will be up to them to contact you.

Would you like your partner to know who is painting for them? No
Examples: Yes, No, No Preference
Notes: You can contact them directly to work out details or ask for advice.  We will attempt to match people with similar preferences, but can't guarantee this is the case.

Is there anybody you would prefer not to paint for?  (please include why)    I painted for johndoe123 in the last miniature exchange.
Notes:  If you like to paint for a variety of different people, you can list those you've painted for in the past.  We will do our best to pair you with someone new.  Another situation is that you know certain people in real life, and would prefer to paint for someone you don't know.

Alright we have two days remaining for sign-ups and I have only received 7 questionnaires so far. Not sure if that is due to lack of interest this year or lack of awareness as people may not be looking for the post this early. With this in mind, I wanted to get feedback on some ways to boost participation.

Here are the options I thought of:

  • Extend current deadline another two weeks to the end of the month but if people wanted to be able to order their mini this month due to the promos, they would not be able to .
  • Keep current deadline and do a second set of sign ups next month. Those that sent a questionnaire would get their assignment now and an extra month to paint.
  • Extend current deadline a couple of days and try to boost awareness on other Social Media like Facebook and Discord.

What do you guys think?

I’d be okay with any of the three options. Some combination of 1 and 3 would be my preference. Extend the deadline a couple weeks and promote it on other social media.

I would go with #2.  Not really comfortable swapping with random strangers.  I know most of the people here and know they'll send their packages.

But in the end it doesn't matter how many participate. Everyone still gets a partner.

I'd go for 2 or 3. I've been holding out on buying and getting the promos specifically so I could buy for my Sophie partner as part of my order. Also, if we do 2, I can sign up again and do another exchange :-D

I'll be submitting my form once I get back from work this evening. That is assuming anybody wanted to ship internationally!

I am good with whatever but I do agree with Inarah. I feel like I "know" the people here on the forums. It is too bad that more people didn't sign up but in the end, everyone will have a partner.

I'd personally be happier if it was just a forum kinda thing. I feel as if we know and trust each other here and I'm not sure how I'd feel it it waa extended to people that I don't know.

I am happy to extend the deadline for signups and to do a repeat for notifying everyone that SS2020 is up and running.  I would like to keep it to forum members, its more like we are painting for family rather than complete strangers.  (what can I say, I am a bit insular)  I would like to stay in the forum but there is no reason we cant add the SS to our Signatures for a little while to get the word out once we get a new extended date.

and I am more than happy to ship internationally. ::D:

Presenting a trio of Christmas Ghosts by Reaper (Unfortunately I can't find their catalogue numbers).

Despite their eyes being a bit googly, I'm really pleased with how all three of them came out (Particularly Christmas Future).
I still don't get why Christmas Present is dressed like a pirate though.

As always, any comments or criticisms are warmly received.

I've bought several Christmas minis over the years, but this is the first one I painted! He's such a cute fellow and I had fun with him, even if it was Dec 28th before he was done...

"Come out to the coast, we'll get together, have a few laughs..."

First, let me explain "why" I made this.  Yes, "Die Hard" is a Christmas movie.  The same as any of those Hallmark channel movies, "It's a Wonderful Life," or "Elf."  I can feel my teeth rotting just mentioning that movie.

Second, my wife wears holiday pins everyday for the month of December.  She even wears a pair of pins on occasion.  She has too many to fit into 25 days.

Since this became a tradition, as is watching "Die Hard," every year, I started planning this craft project.

I did have this sidelined for a bit, mostly due to not having the right size "vent" I wanted to use for the size of the pin.  I finally found a rounded corner rectangular set of cookie cutters (pkg of 10) that fit the bill.  LOL

So with laminated pictures of John in the can, as it were, I cut him in and then added UV resin to seal him in.  A generous layer of resin.  Then I added a cutout of his head and his hand with the lighter to add some depth.

Voila, John McClane in the vents of the Nakatomi Building. You might have seen some ornaments around the 'net.

Here are some pics as well as my wife sporting the pin today.

Just john bent into the "vent."

John with a cutout of his head one layer in front of the background pic and his hand and light another layer ahead of that.

Sadly a few bubbles formed on the top layers.  I got a few out before hardening the resin.

      The pin in place.

My wife's new Christmas Pin.  LMAO

It has two pin backs attached to the back with the UV resin.  Both with the clasp end and pin point down.  Easy placement and closing.  Holds it in place well.

I think I am going to find a mini-bow for the top and add a ribbon around the outside.  Add to the Christmas presentation.

For those wondering what UV resin I used... I got a couple of .75oz bottles off of Wish for the job a while ago.  Worked well.

Enjoy and leave your thoughts and CC.  I am interested in hearing what you all think.

This month I felt particularly inspired by the Nutcracker characters and decided to do a whole themed set. I learned a lot about the original source material and had fun reimagining some of my favorite Reaper painters as Christmas characters. If you want to play the guessing game, go right ahead, I'll put my inspirations after the images

      Sugar Plum Fairy- Erin Hartwell
      Drosselmeyer- Aaron Lovejoy
      The Nutcracker- James Wappel
      The Rat King- Ian Markon
