Dark Sword Dragonkin Rogue WIP (PaintingBig Patreon paintalong)

Recommended Posts

I haven’t been on the forum much this year.  Since joining Anne Foerster’s Patreon I’ve been spending more time on Discord.

I’ve been painting this guy following the paintalong she’s done for one of the tiers.  It’s the first time I’ve tried to do a “display quality” paint job.  Other firsts are NMM, freehand, leather texture, cloth texture, and sculpted base elements.

I actually started this guy early this year, but then stopped painting altogether for about 4 months after the pandemic started.  I picked him back up in July and am getting close to finishing.  I’m posting a series of pics I’ve taken as I went, and will continue to post as I finish him up soon.

Feb 29: prepped and primed, with some minor GS work

Mar 1:  base GS sculpting

Aug 2:  skin lined, basecoated, and shaded

Aug 6:  skin initial highlights

Great progress.  The scale color, texture, and highlighting are great!  The cloth has a very interesting and eye pleasing color as well.

Thanks!  The cloak is mostly Cailean Wine from the Pathfinder line, shaded with some black indigo I think.  Highlights (next post) were with some Runic Glow added, and then it was glazed with clear magenta at the end to bring up the saturation.

I've just been following Anne's instructions, so I can't take credit for any of the choices.  She's a color wizard - I've learned a lot about color (and everything else!) on this project.

FYI - I’m posting this partly to have a record of the process, so I’ll add some commentary as I go on where I had issues, etc.  I hope others find it useful or interesting, too.

Aug 16:  after finishing the blending and highlighting on the cloth.  I’m really happy with the loincloth, but still not completely satisfied with the shading on the back.  It’s a really complex surface.  I’ll probably work on it a little more when I touch up at the end.

Next was some freehand on the cloak.  Painting over the best blended cloak I had ever painted was pretty nerve wracking!  Sure enough, I screwed it up.  This was supposed to just have a single horizontal line through the middle of the pattern, but I placed the line too high.  So I turned a bug into a feature and added a second line below!  ::D:

Aug 23:  initial sketch in white over walnut brown (also I need to be more careful to minimize rub-off!)

Aug 27:  finished up the initial pattern in white.  It was tricky figuring out how to distort the pattern over a cloak sculpted this way.  The cloth is sculpted to look beautiful, not to accurately represent a symmetrical piece of fabric.  The right side is “too long” so I wasn’t sure exactly how to orient the pattern there.  I tried to fade it to dark in the deep fold on the left.

And then the NMM-ification.  This was done with the NMM gold triad and Pure White, with some glazing with Walnut Brown in the folds.

28 Aug:  basecoated with NMM Gold Shadow (and touched up the pattern a bit)

30 Aug:  Finished the NMM

Basecoated leather armor and then worked on trying to get a suede-like texture on the bracers and greaves.  This was Walnut Brown, Russet Brown, and then highlighting up by stippling with Rich Leather abs NMm Gold Highlight.

Finished Dragonkin’s leather last week.  Pretty happy with the bracers and greaves, not so much with the cuirass, but leaving it this way.

Oct 10:  leather finished

Oct 11:  NMM steel on small buckles and blades, then quick job on tan trousers

Oct 17:  Yesterday I did a little more work on the trousers and then did the highlighting/texturing on the inside of the cloak

And that’s all caught up.  Next is some more gold NMM on some small details, hopefully this evening.

Great mini, looks good!

Thanks!  Sorry for the delayed response - work got busy and I was away for a while.

This guy is getting very close!  I'm giving myself a deadline of end of Thanksgiving weekend to finish him, come hell or high water.

I finished the gold NMM (on the dagger hilt) and did eyes, claws and a couple of other details.  Did some touchups on the cloak too.  Need to clean up the sword NMM, a few more touchups and then basing.  So close!

Most of these aren't up to date and I've changed bits of them here and there since these, I'll be saving those shots for the finished product, but hopefully you enjoy the journey.

Starting with a dry fit of 19507 Spiders of Emrith Kul encounter set.
Not sure what to do with those bodies in webs on the slot. Need to go back and look at the pics to see if I should cut them or see if I have a spare slotta base to stand them up.
      Backdrop is a black cardstock.

Assembled my crew and prepped and primed them.
Two clopsen troopers, a lizardman recruit, sniper and another recruit/ chisler.

A gnoll commando, medic and recruit, and a cultist recruit/hacker and trooper.
Edit: It is a bit funny that My crew isn't using much of the actual Stargrave miniatures other than a few arms and guns, but then this is just the first crew, and I'll need some ruffians and pirates as well.

During my Shelf of Shame Project I started with the fairy. Since there is only room for one project on my wet palette, this one had to take the back seat during RVE. Today I finished another project, at least as far as the palette is concerned, so I can finally continue with my little fairy. Every aspect of this project was created by rolling dice.
For everyone interested, here is a somewhat elaborate summary of part one:
During weekend I usually put down my brushes. At the moment, painting is a stand in for my job that's on hold because of Corona restrictions, so there will probably be no progress until next week. I just wanted to set up everything so I can start right away!
