Chain Devils - (WoK Pelegarth Brutes Conversion)

Another day another devil.

 

Several months ago I was searching for a suitable mini for a chain devil.  I was in need of a few of them to represent hellish prison guards.  Unfortunately, there's not a lot of options that I liked.  Most of the official pre-painted chain devils look like awkward Michelin Men.  So I went looking for a suitable substitute.

 

I settled on the Pelegarth Brutes from CMON's Wrath of Kings.  A few modifications later and...

 

 

Three frightening and unrelenting guards of hell.

The Brutes worked perfectly.  They had the body-builder mass to evoke that classic prison guard/ torturer character, with enough infernal and mysterious detail to fit the hell vibe.  The big chain hook weapons are what sold me.

 

 

There just wasn't quite enough chain to scream "chain devil" so I decided to do some minor mods to these guys.

 

 

Each of them got several bits of tiny chain attached to their belts and collars.  I didn't really need these guys to be made out of chains, just masters of chains.  Just imagining the sound of rattling chains echoing through the halls of some hellish prison is enough to get my DM heart pumping.

 

 

The rest of the metals got painted up with a rusty look.  The flaps along their waists could be leather, but I wanted to lean into the metal theme.

 

 

I also enjoyed the masks on these guys.  Reminded me of the "Man in the Iron Mask" which was fitting for prison-themed characters.  Perhaps an eternity of being tortured turns a damned soul into the tormentor.  The original models have large fan-like horns.  I tried filing them down to a more conventional pointed-horn look.

 

 

Since I was reinterpreting the character, I didn't have any frame of reference for their skin.  I was considering devilish red or a corps-like pale.  Since I decided i wanted them to be covered in scars from always swinging around their hooks and chains so I opted out of red, not wanting the scars to blend in with the skin.  The scars/cuts are okay.  not my favorite, but they work and stand out from a distance.

 

 

And here's a closer look at how I attached the chains.  I went through a lot of variations.  The first chains I got were too thick, so they ended up as basing decoration on some of these guys.  The next chain was perfect but I wanted it to look rusted.  Figuring this would be hard to do once assembled, I strung out a length of chain on a piece of foam board and pinned it in place.  I then painted it there.  I tried supergluing the chains to the minis but was having a lot of trouble controlling it or getting it to set correctly.  The baking soda trick didn't help here either.  Maybe some kind of activator would have helped but I still don't have any.  I eventually decided to use some green stuff to adhere the chains.  It's not the prettiest, but it worked and looks fine enough on the finished models.

 

I really liked working on these guys.  It was a lot of fun reinterpreting an existing monster and finding a way to make it unique.  They're definitely a favorite of mine.  Plus I love that the chains actually dangle and swing when moving the minis around.

How have you reinterpreted a mini in your own projects?

I do that all the time, I don't play any of the games, I paint for display and fun.

Creating armies/warbands and background stories all the time and a minis gets it's own place in that story.
