Display box : repurposed children's gift box

Recommended Posts

My child received a set of board books one Christmas and once the box was open it served no purpose to anyone but me. I rescued it to turn into a "fancy display box." I will tape up the edges of the acetate, then cover all the non-sky surfaces- on the inside and outside - with paint. What I need now is help choosing a/ some colour/s.

Dreadmere gulper for scale (approx 5x6x10.5).

Please post colour combo suggestions though I'll probably do a pale blue on the inside sides. Help me decide.

Black or a neutral grey would interfere less with any colours of the mini displayed, keeping the focus on the mini.

The insert in the back, you can leave it there or put something else in front, depending on the subject.

If you have seen my pics, I use pics from the internet and print those for such purposes.

I would be tempted to try to replicate the sky background on the left and right interior sides.

  1. Photograph just the background
  2. Take it to, or email it to, a place with a color copier (Office Depot or Kinkos can do this near me; equivalent in Toronto? unknown)
  3. Have them print it for you on color copier paper
  4. Mount that to stiffer cardboard inserts for the two sides.

Black would be OK for the exterior. Since you can unfold it as seen in picture two, a rattlecan could do that job.

Stark glossy white might be a thought.

What colour would coordinate with the display shelves it might sit on?

Maybe a steampunk brass effect. Rustoleum had some cool rattlecan options like that last time I checked.

Interior Floor Surface

Black, Jet Black.

Presumably you will create a rectangular, flocked diorama, slide-in, insert that will mostly cover the floor, to go with whatever models are put on display.

You could create two or three different swappable inserts as you think of different ideas.

My pale blue craft paint is a good match for colour. I did a base coat . Will do some sponging of white in a few spots, and maybe a satin turquoise, then seal with modge

Then I'll need to figure out the rest. Not sure if I'll try to prime grey  because it covers better than my white primer, and also won't be as difficult to cover with white craft paint as anything else.

Generally not impressed, likely to be my only purchasesin this line. Not close to terrain in quality.
Edgerunners set G ( missing right arm for exec 3, waiting to hear back from MFC)

      Edgerunners F primed, media glued
Guitarist leg broken in pack, waiting to hear back.  Looks too small to pin for me and won't glue on its own

      Keytarist primed manager glued

I've been wanting a few quick space saving buildings for  war gaming. I decided to make a few false fronts,  but use a simplified biscuit (instead of a tab like many paper models) to make them free standing. Rolling out the brick pattern would help.
These would be for my foam boards (insert link here sometime).  But it turns out my plan of 3 row buildings (8.25x 6 )with separate corner pieces isn't going to fit. Need to decide whether to split up into 2 building pieces  (5.5 in long x 6 in high) or do corner and 1 building and have them  connect. I also now need figure out whether to plan for an alley when I didn't in my boards. Hmm. Stay tuned.

I few years ago I emptied a can of spray foam for some hills. I decided to hack up one to see if I could do some scatter that was more rock  pile than grassy hill like I've previously done (insert link to foam experiments thread).
About a month ago I hacked the foam hill, and last night I glued it to a dead DVD as a base and clamped it.

This is what it looks like now.

I'm going to let it dry a bit more then give it some goop, then a modge seal. Then drybrush, and maybe some flock.

I got  few pieces to add to my previous set due to SW closing.
Here's my WIP thread for all of them. These most recent pieces start on p5.
