Cranky Dog
Recent family news, the worst has hit one of my aunts (one of my father's younger sisters). First of all, she's been living with a transplanted lung for over 20 years (she had a degenerative disease), and had already beaten the odds of survival by many many years. But now she's been hit not only with Covid, but with C. Difficile too (a nasty gut bacteria). From what I heard earlier this week, her lung capacity was down to 20%. And yesterday we've been told she's been placed in palliative care. 😢 [Update Jan 8] Sigh. I've been informed in the last hour that she passed away this afternoon. 😭 I don't have any other details at the moment. Werkrobotwerk
Well, I'm back at work. I waited out the isolation recommendations before I ever got my test results. Not that they mean much now as if I had covid it would now be at least two incubation periods past me. In other news, dad was sent home from the hospital early after a heart procedure because they decided the risk of infection from other patients was more of a threat than just sending him home. He is doing well so far, but the whole thing is off putting.
Arkady
My nephew's wife is the first confirmed Covid case in the family. Given they live, almost as literally as feasible, on the other side of the globe, not a very immediate risk. Considering they had to change/axe a lot of international travel plans over the last two years, I get why they are particularly not amused by the entire Djokovic thing. Going by the claims his family makes, the guy is an irresponsible arse that made unmasked public appearances the day after testing positive for Covid. which is a blatant breach of Serbian quarantine rules and might even constitute reckless endangerment. Why should the Australian public have to put up with someone like that?
WhiteWulfe
Numbers are still skyrocketing here in the province (something like 50% positivity rates now), so much so they've switched to a system that can be summarized as "if you have symptoms, isolate for five days", and "we'll only test you if you fit into some of these small categories" (namely higher risk of complication ones). Aaaand I wound up calling in to work today due to symptoms - symptoms that have been getting worse through the day. Hubby has symptoms too, fweeeee. Thankfully they're mild ones, but I am trying to look at this on the positive side of things: while my focus wanders off randomly, it is giving my hands a chance to recover from that month of cold (right hand especially flared up with a skin condition), and drink a bunch of fluids. Hubby likes having someone brew him tea twice a day too 😛

Hubby likes having someone brew him tea twice a day too 😛 Hope you and the hubby feel better soon! My riskiest contact will be one D&D player who works with more other people (he's good at masking in public, no chinstraps); the other people in my bubble are two officemates who are pretty darn cautious. We aren't going out, and we don't work with the public. I'm at home today because although the roads are no longer icy, the rain is making some THICK puddles exacerbated by melting snow/ice. Yesterday I biked in it - not too bad, but one frequent puddle spot was deep enough that I soaked my legs going through it last night, and it is undoubtedly deeper today. The hospitals have some warnings of "don't get injured right now" so..... I may as well do my writing work at home. No need to risk hydroplaning into a bus right now when there isn't a good place to put my pieces back together. Plus the lizard wanted attention today, so hey, I can please the scaly brat too. Sure hope I get my booster invite in 3 days. <twiddles thumbs>
strawhat
Like everywhere else, numbers are through the roof. Hospitals have been 85%+ capacity for months. So our new county health director has re-instituted a mask mandate for the city. Naturally, the state attorney general is convinced he needs to sue the county health department because the county is trying to alleviate pressure on the hospitals as well as save lives.
Inarah
As I expected the mask orders that were allowed to lapse at the end of November are being put back in place. School districts are requiring them too, at least the ones that have enough non-infected staff to stay open. The major hospital that handles COVID patients is out of ventilators, beds, and room in the morgue and is telling people NOT to come to the emergency room for anything less than a major injury. I feel like we've done this before...
Rahz
While I should not be surprised, like everywhere else, things are nuts and changing day to day. When not virtually at work, I've been avoiding the internet for the most part, including friendly refuges like here, as I've hit, like so many, that stage of weary apathy. My wife had major surgery right before Christmas (successful and she's well on the mend) so we have mostly ignored the outside world but when they announced schools were going virtual again and they closed my son's dorm (boarding school for kids with learning disabilities) I can admit that it took a few days of crankiness to hit the acceptance stage again. Day schools return on Monday (cause closing them for 1-2 weeks helped?! /shrug) but my son's home e-learning with our support "until further notice". I work in a large Government department and am one of the lucky guys trying to organize the "return to the office" from an IT standpoint which is about as much fun as it sounds. Just before the holidays we had entire divisions going in to the office to "test things out" but of course equipment has been pillaged over the 2 years we've been at home, minor maintenance things that would have been flagged and dealt with months ago have been ignored or become bigger issues and folks, including some of our techs, have honestly forgotten how to do things or use certain tools as they haven't been touched in so long. This of course leads to lots of cranky employees who "can't work" and a deluge of support tickets we don't have the bodies on hand to deal with. Really hoping things settle as little as we have hung on to plane tickets to Cancun for March break for a friend's wedding and it's been comforting dreaming of laying on a beach or play with the kids in the water... I need some sun and fun as I haven't touched a paintbrush in almost 2 months and I miss it but don't have the mojo these days... 1
Jasper_the_2nd
Our numbers were skyrocketing, then they restricted PCR tests to those at highest risk and/or need, so now most people are just using the quick home tests and then theoretically entering data on a web site if positive. So our numbers no longer mean anything, other than the hospital numbers, which continue to rise.... My work's back to the office plan took a hit, as the January date has now been cancelled. It doesn't affect me since I had always planned to take the latest date possible (currently the end of March) because why would I want to have to go out and drive and park and walk in our winter weather if I can avoid it? Less than 2 months until my 2 year anniversary of working from home..... 1

Pegazus
The schools just sent out an email about their Covid exposure procedures. In short, they are stopping them because there are just too many and staff cannot keep up. They are saying that if your child shows symptoms such as cough, fever, sore throat, or sneezing, to keep your child home. Ya know, like you’re supposed to do anytime a kid is sick. So I guess we’re returning to normal? Hahahahahaha…. 1
