Cultists and Warlock (77040, 77351, and WotC)

Hello all.  Today I wanted to show off my collection of cultists that I painted up a year ago.  Like others on this site, I debated what colors to paint my cultists for awhile, but I ultimately settled on a blue-black and red scheme.  I choose to highlight the black with blue just to add more color, though looking back I wish I had just gone with neutral black, or a different color entirely.  But they still work.  I also tried out my new dark elf skin triad on these fellas.  Though they aren't necessarily meant to represent Drow in my games, I figured it made them mysterious and it wouldn't really matter if they were perfect representations.  I wanted the cultists to be adaptable and reusable for any cult situation in my games.

Wrath of Ashardalon - Cultists

I've had these guys since I started collecting minis.  The D&D boardgames are a great source of minis for those starting out.  Though I have found that I don't particularly love the quality of sculpts included.  Their faces are a bit subdued and I remember them being hard to pick out form under the shadowy hoods.  I also like the skulls on the back as they add a much needed color pop on these otherwise uniform minis.  These guys informed my color decisions for the rest.

 

Cultists and Circle (77351)

These guys are a bit more dynamic and interesting than the Wrath of Ashardalon cultists.  I was pleased that their clothing matched the former as well as it did.  I had some fun trying out some tiny freehand work on the one cultist's book.  The summoning circle they came with sat around unpainted until a few months ago when I painted it up along side a demi-lich.  You can check out the summoning circle, demi-lich, and other Tomb of Horrors inspired paintjobs HERE.

 

Satheras, Male Warlock (77040)

I wanted someone a bit more unique to lead the cultists and ended up settling on this warlock.  The hood and robes were similar enough to feel like they came from the same tailor, but unique enough to stand out.  I also opted to invert the colors for additional distinction.  This guy also got some freehand embellishments on his scroll.  His staff is the part I'm least happy with.  The crystal isn't quite right and I must have been rushing the paintjob on the staff itself.  I think I was going for a bone-look and wanted to use some of the tans and whites I had used on his scroll, but I can't help but see a candycane when looking at it.  But he looks alright standing in front of the crowd.  This guy was meant to be a long-term antagonist in my Frostrun game, though he had only just made his first appearance when I had to stop doing in-person games.  Hopefully I get a chance to restart that game when things clear up.  I'll eventually get around to doing a write-up on him, but in the meantime you can check out my other Winter minis of Frostrun HERE.

Awesome job. The guy with the staff means business. They're certainly summoning fiends from Malbolge. I like the color scheme, they could be worshipers of Wee Jas or even Nerull.
