A winter storm buried my part of the globe in snow last night so I'm filling a bit chilly.  So today's the perfect day to show off these frigid little birds from Bones 4.

Emperor Penguins

 

First up are these fantastic little penguins.  Based on their size and sculpt, I decided they best represented Emperor Penguins.  I didn't where the sculpt implied their bellies ended so I just ignored it and used reference images instead.  I probably should have smoothed out the gap ahead of time, but I didn't realize how much I didn't like the location until I had already started painting.  I tried adding some detail on to these guys other than just flat black and white.  I think this shows best on the stomachs and the slight shadow around their midriffs.  I also highlighted the heads and wings a bit brighter than usual to imply the sun reflecting off their feathers, but this might not be very noticeable with my overhead lights.  The eyes got a few reflective dots to help them stand out from the all-black head.  And the yellow necks were exactly the pop of color these monochromatic birds needed.

 

Dire Penguin

 

And then we have this guy.  I did not know I needed a dire penguin until I got one.  These unusual options are one of the things I love about the Bones Kick Starters.  Just unique offerings.  I styled this guy after Northern Rock Hopper penguins because of the ear tufts.  Thankfully this meant that this guy could be a bit more colorful than the other 3.  The pink feet were a fun touch.  The red eyes are also an accurate representation of the real bird.  I did end up dissatisfied with the back.  I tried making the smaller bumps look like boils, and the center spikes look more like a spine of yellow feathers, much like the ear tufts.  I just really hate how they turned out.  Especially the yellow feathers.  On the actual bird, the yellow feathers are interspersed with black, but trying to replicate this just looks like a poorly painted spine.  Anyone have recommendations on a better way to imply that detail?

Other than the back, I like this guy.  I'll have to think up a fun encounter for my players to face this guy.

 

These were a fun little set, though they took me longer to do than I anticipated.  So much black and white really killed my motivation.  Glad they're done and decently satisfied with the results.  They make a nice addition to my winter collection.  If you want to see more of my wintery minis, check out my ongoing Frostrun Project Here
