The Black Knight of Winter - Chaos Warrior (Bones 4)

Hi all.  Another entry in my winter-themed minis.  This guy was intended to serve as the BBEG in my Frostrun campaign.  Kriger was the descendant of a greedy half-giant king who's line had been cursed to undeath.  Kriger sought to lead an army of Draugr and vikings to reclaim his family throne.  This "chaos warrior" model from Bones 4 was perfect.

This model was clearly "Evil" with a capital "E" and was also larger and more imposing than a standard 28mm.  I have him based on a 40mm base, which lends itself to emphasizing his size, as a giant-blooded warrior.  Plus the horned helm and fur lined cloak had just enough of a viking feel to suggest a winter-clad enemy.

 

 

The shield was a fun detail.  I've seen it painted up more organically, but I wanted it to look like something more decorative, so I kept the eyes and teeth metallic.  It still doesn't make sense as a practical shield, but it's cool looking.

 

 

The Sword was another fun detail.  It was originally going to be metal, but the mini was looking a bit plain and a sword that big was begging for some attention.  I tried out a hot metal effect.  I've never done anything like it before, but I'm happy with the result.  It definitely looks magical and warm, so that's close enough in my book.

 

 

I also tried to carry that light down into some OSL on the shoulder of the mini and his base.  You can also see where I tried freehanding a chain-mail pattern on his sleeve as the sculpt was lacking this detail and it only made sense to me that he'd be wearing armor.

 

 

I really like how this guy turned out.  He was one of those minis where I really pushed myself and tried some different things.  I think it shows.  Hopefully I'll get to continue his story, and return to my Frostrun game.  Maybe by then I'll have found some suitable viking-esque warriors to accompany him.

Thank you all! This is definitely one of my best minis of the past year. Put a lot of work into him.
