Auberon Prints Mini Things

Recommended Posts

My printer has been sitting idle the last couple of weeks just because I was working every day and didn't want to spend my free time cleaning up and removing supports. Last night I fired it up and printed the last part of the figure I was working on, the display base.  It looks like someone took out a terminator.

And success!  Nothing fell off and after it was done, most of the prints popped off when the plate was flexed. I have now printed all of the Loot welcome pack heroes at default scale. I think at some

I've backed some patreons that I've not printed anything from, so I'm not sure how they look in hand.  Digital is all well and good, but I certainly prefer judging how a figure looks off a physical model.  So I set an overnight print up using presupports for RNEstudio's welcome pack.  They were done by 3D printing pro, who I find to be a bit hit or miss, but I just wanted to see what the minis looked like rather than getting the perfect print for a competition entry.

Also, my new phone has a macro camera so I'm trying it out.  The main limitation seems to be that it has a fixed focus of 3-5cm.  The phone gets in the way of the room light so for the moment I'm just using it's light to illuminate the print.

We'll start with the worst of the bunch, a knight who smacked his sword against something solid. Were I to print him again a few more supports on the sword to keep it aligned seem necessary.

The dwarf is not so bad.  He just had his right tassel pancake.  I'm not sure if it got missed or the support failed, but it would still work for tabletop.

And our female monk had a pancaked hamstring. There was a support connected to it but I guess it wasn't enough.  I just filed it down a bit and it seems fine.

The next three all printed fine, though I managed to damage one with my thumbnail removing supports.

Ah, those look nice you say, but what's the scale?  The answer is...

383293100_RNEtest07.thumb.jpg.4b7bdb25a3ad2fc2f9a713a62471203e.jpg

Tall.  I'm not sure what they are officially, but the knight is 40mm to the eyes.  Or for comparison we have a "32mm" Loot mini, a "28mm heroic scale" Reaper mini, the RN mini, and a KD mini (officially 35mm? I can't remember).  The Reaper mini is the old metal version, and is actually 28mm to the eye. You could drop these RN minis in a KD game and not notice a difference, but against the old metal Reaper minis they work as half-giants.

How much bigger do they seem than the Reapers. I am planning on printing the bare chested guy a couple times next weekend to add to the pirates for my sons Hero Kids adventure.

Considering you asked about this two months ago, you've likely seen the difference for yourself.  Even so I decided to do a little scaling experiment overnight.  Officially Loot is 32mm, and 32x0.9=28.8mm, so a 90% reducion should get them in the ballpark of the old Reaper metal minis.  Since Loot actually runs a bit taller than that they might still be a little large after scaling, but because of their proportions they would likely look thin at the same height. I took three of the starting heroes, scaled them, supported them, and printed them.

First, how they look at 90%

805340628_Loot901.thumb.jpg.201fea66025be5025b85c12fda337889.jpg

And how they look side by side.

So at 90% they are about shoulder height to their former selves, which is about what the 28mm figures were.  I grabbed some nearby 28mm metal minis to compare with, but they did have rather thick bases.

Ah, but what about Bones?  They seem to get a little bigger every kickstarter.  Soon we may as well call them 32 or 35 mm since that's what they seem to be anyway.  However all I had handy was an older figure.

And all together.

Next time I do this I'll try to find some figures that aren't already based so I can better comparison pictures.

Or captain obvious says there is another solution. Side by side, big and small.

Today I managed to succeed and fail at the same time, which is to say that the figure turned out OK, but the scenic base had some issues.  Usually you think of layer lines showing up when things are at their thickest, but in this case the problem arose about 2/3 of the way through the print.  I assume it wasn't stable enough and got floppy so I have it going again with some additional heavy supports thrown on.

First the foxy lady.

And her scenic base. You can see all the lines on the upper half of the wood circle.

Who makes the kitsune?

She reminds me of some minis from Anime Tactics.

Ah right, I believe she is from a patreon that hasn't been posted here.  I'll do some enabling in the patreon thread since more people probably look there.

It really feels like whoever sculpted this intended for it to be printed upside down.  I dislike placing supports that way so I have accepted the 1001 island challenge! We'll see how she prints tomorrow and if I need even more supports.

There we go, three dark elves. None of them have two swords.

Wait you say, there seems to be something odd about their bases.  Indeed there is.  One is 25mm, one is 28mm, and one is 30mm.  Apparently AVG doesn't bother to standardize their bases, so if you need to scale them for your preferred system you can't just figure out one factor to rule them all.  Each base will need to be checked individually.

One of the reasons why I haven't printed many bases so far. Come to think of it, I may have printed off just 2 or 3, unless the base is part of the figure. I know I printed one off for a Shadowdancer mini, mainly cause of the dynamic of the sculpt. It would have just looked wrong on a regular, plain plastic one,

Nice, looking prints too.

I think that is my only critique of AVG. The scale consistency is off. Even the minis might need to be scaled at a different percentage than the bases.

Ah, I missed an island.  I also was a little too light on my supports in a couple of places, but as a terrain piece I can still use it.  Even so we'll improve the supports and try for a pristine piece tomorrow.

I just realized I never posted any pics.  Can you tell which one had some support issues?

Spoiler

It was the one on your left.  You can see how the wood tapers on the far left of the table.

Still works for terrain.
