Unruly's 3D Printing Follies

Recommended Posts

Don't think of it as a failure. I see it becoming part of a diorama, a horribly slain eye tyrant. ::D: Print out some eye stalks to lie severed on the ground around it, and get creative with making it work.

So I've had another set of support failures. I've been making it a habit to have a multitude of files ready to print and switch to printing a different thing when one fails, rather than going and fixing the first thing's issues and immediately reprinting it. This time around it was a giant demon mini.

The torso/arms did a similar double failure to what I had with the beholder, but not nearly as badly. And this one wasn't hollowed out so I can't blame it on that. I just must have missed some islands or under-supported. I'm betting on under-supporting, because lately I've been trying to use fewer supports than I was.

When the torso failed, I switched to the right wing. This printed up nicely, except it actually broke while it was printing. When it finished and I went to take it off the build plate the part that connects to the body had broken off of the main wing. Not a big deal, though. Some super glue, a pin or two, and a tiny sliver of green stuff will fix that up. But it still makes me think I need to go in and add another couple supports there and see if that helps prevent future breaks.

It also got a couple weird lines in it. Could be that those were mishaps caused by my pausing the print, though. I may have accidentally made it skip a layer or two, I don't know. It just looks like something shifted slightly mid-print. And speaking of shifted...

I went on to printing the left wing after that, and it printed fine. Or rather it would have printed fine, had I remembered to tighten the build plate down after I removed the right wing. So I got a "complete" wing but it looks like it was carved out of a striated cliff. No offense to the people with FDM printers, I know they've gotten better than they were a few years ago, but I got a resin printer because I didn't want to see layer lines like that.

These supports are supposed to be straight...

Ah yes, I think we all forget to tighten either the resin vat or build plate at least once.  Sucks that yours was on such a large piece.

For me, checking it is now almost an obsession.

Only once?

Ooops....

I'm tempted to replace the small finger screws that holds the Resin vat in place with something a bit more... substantial...  Long arms that will block the print plate from even getting down into the vat unless they've been tightened.

I'm not sure what a crash like that would do to your Z-screw alignment.

OK, maybe make them so that it blocks me from adding resin.  Or at least make it very visible that something needs to be done.

So these have to be support failures. They have to be. I've gotten failures like this across 3 different pieces, from two different models. This one isn't as bad as the other two, but it still bugs me because I could have sworn I got everything and had enough supports stuck up his crotch to make sure it would print right.

The way this is going, I'm going to kill my first bottle of resin and half the prints are going to be failures. I know, I'm new to the game and it's a learning process, but I can still get frustrated.

Do make sure you use the right kind of supports for the right area.

Trying to help here, maybe you already thought of it all.

The lowest parts that are built first on the build plates ( especially with some bigger stuff) should be at least medium supports and if big, Heavy supports.

Smaller parts can be supported by either medium or light supports.

Maybe you did place the supports in the right area but they weren't heavy enough?

Another possibility.

Before slicing you check for islands, right?

Now look very carefully at those place, if the area starts building just before the support reaches it, it will still fail.

The support needs to be the first thing that is in that area, then the mini.

I have adopted the approach that it is better with too much support than too little. Toeing the line will in my experience lead to failures on some level more often than not. Usually it is the contact points between the supportbraces and the actual mini  that are too thin and fail, so I like to up the diameter of those and also add extra thick supports at the lowest point.

I agree, I rather clean up a little more than have prints fail due to lack of supports.

Do you want to post a screen shot of your supports for the failed prints? Someone might have some advice to give.

First bottle tends to be the tester bottle. Look at this way, you paid for the printer & the bottle was free! Now if your still having problems after you've bought your bottles, then yah it gets frustrating. Have you thought about switching to a different brand or color?

      Story
      The Death Knight Rises
To me there's only one true fallen paladin who, deceived by the darkest forces, broke his oath and became a paragon of hatred and terror. But, I am into classic TTRPGs, so I wanted to rethink the concept. Boris Woloszyn, amazing sculptor that he is, took over and has transformed this idea into a remarkable sets of miniatures.
        The Miniatures
There are only two. The Minion is 32mm scale and the Fallen Paladin measures 40mm to the top of his head. They will get cast in the crispest of resins. They come unassembled and without bases.
The Paladin - doing a gentle spin
       PLAY The Minions
      The Pledge Levels
There are two. Ones comes with only the Death Knight, the other comes with the Death Knight and two minions.
The price for only the Death Knight is 15CA$, the set with 1 Death Knight and 2 minions is 35CA$ (less than 30US$).
Backerkit will charge max. 14CA$ for postage on top of that.
        Stretch Goals
We have one and I will unlock it if we reach 10K.
        Add-On's
We will open a backer kit pledge manager for those that want some extra minis, and we make sure to drop all the suitable Boris stuff in there too.

I want to give you a little preview what to expect in terms of add-on's.

There will be this well known lot sculpted by Boris. 10C$ each. (In case you want to top up to find out what 10K will bring)
And there will be some 3D printed things (20 Microns, they paint like casts).

      1. This lad and his little buddy, because dwarves and gobbos. 8CA$
      2. 3 Halflings on a rampage. 2 female 1 male, because. Also - kettle jump pack. The pacK of 3 plus 2 steam bases will be 20 C$
I still have more to throw into the mix, but I need to re-watch that episode now.

      Thanks again!

      Story
Signum Workshop is a division of Signum Games company that specializes in the creation of high-quality fantasy miniatures in STL format for self-printing.
Signum Games have been creating and casting fantasy resin miniatures for several years, and our miniatures have a lot of admirers from all over the world. 3D printers are nowadays becoming more and more popular, therefore we decided to join the market and make our miniatures more accessible to you.
The imagination of our artists and modellers have no borders, and sometimes there are just too many new characters (or variations of one character) for us to be able to cast all at once in resin. But we don't want new characters to just gather dust on the hard drive and wait for their time to come. After all, now we finally can share all our new products with you!
All of our miniatures have 32mm scale, which was not a suitable scale for some board games. All our models in files will be pre-assembled and have an option of individual parts.
You can learn all about the quality of our models and to print files simply by clicking on the link and download a free model!
The Signum Workshop project is only at the very beginning of its journey, so we will be happy to see your support, questions, advice, and comments on Patreon!
By supporting us on Patreon, every month you will get access to a new set of STL files of our newest miniatures.
        Dear friends,
this set introduces 4 factions that will appear on our Patreon in the future.
You will meet Plague fighters from the far East, proud warriors from the hot South, harsh warriors from the cold North, and adventurers from the mountains of the West.

Found and thought I'd pass on.  Could be fun.  With the continued weakening of the dollar vs. Euro currencies it makes it increasingly more difficult to get in one these.

After launching our brand with our historical line "Ancient Duels", we embarked on the project of developing our Fantasy line and introducing you to "Dungeon Classics".
A line designed to evoke the memories of those Heroquest and D&D games from our childhood that today are still very interesting concepts.
We wanted to present them in a dungeon, to allow you to paint it in unimaginable ways, they have been designed so that painters can enjoy all kinds of materials, textures and effects so that you let your imagination run

We have decided to present this project on Kickstarter to be able to offer you an interesting range of exclusive pieces that will be yours completely free of charge to help us produce and finance it.
For those who acquire the complete scene, they will also have the opportunity to obtain the roof of the scenic base if it is unlocked as Stretch Goal, having a complete cave!
We currently have the masters printed and we are doing the first casting tests.
