Question for January 11th:

They say to never lose your inner child. How frequently do you find yourself engaging in "childish" behavior (of the harmless variety)?

Not nearly often enough.

I agree.

I need to work on that.

If you have the misfortune to end up at my house right now, you can cook for yourself. And while you’re at it, clean up the kitchen and take out the trash.

Swears.

Does getting married count?

Critics who treat 'adult' as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very grown up.

Question for January 12th:

How many starter boxes/armies do you have for games you never got to play? Estimates are ok if you don't feel like digging through your hoard. Or do you just like painting and never actually intended to play a game?

"A few".  We're looking at upwards of half a dozen for Infinity that are either half-assembled, assembled, or primed...  With one of them still being in the box (it came in one of the Operation boxes, and I don't really like the Aleph aesthetics).

Now, if we add in Games Workshop, let's just go with another half dozen or so from various starters.  For 40k, I've a ton of Tau (mostly unassembled), my primer army of doom (Catachans), Space Marines (because they're in every starter set, grr!), Tyranids (they came in a starter set), and I'll count the Dark Eldar as well since they're painted, but were never used.  Then there's the Fantasy side, where I have a ton of Skaven, a good amount of Orks, some Empire, and some... Whatever else came in the Isle of Blood set.

Then we also have both BattleTech boxes that haven't been touched too.....

A lot of it is slowwwly being worked on >.>;;; I swear.

Got about 20 just for 40K right now, I do like a lot of the sculpts. Slowly chipping away at them, but right now I'm selecting those units that I will probably be playing once lockdown has ended.

...a few

Some I just like painting. Some I totally intended to use the minis for a Pathfinder game. The Skorne I in fact intended the play then Privateer Press... did what they did to the rules.

Tbh,  none. I'm not a wargamer so the whole army aspect of the hobby hasn't hit me.

I remember back in the day, circle of friends decided we were gonna try Warhammer & one of my friends purchased a big starter undead box. He moved maybe a week later....ouch!

Four for sure. But they are really Navies rather than Armies.

I watched two cartoons and ate a “peanut butter and jelly dog” yesterday.

So I will go with 3 instances / day.  (It’s a likely story...)

None now.

I did pick up a few Games Workshop army starter sets before I realised I can't do the whole paint an army thing, and those have mostly been given away.

Although, if you include skirmish game team boxes, then the answer is too many. I currently have most of the Warhammer Underworlds teams, most of the Guild Ball ones too and all the Twisted ones.

None of this was picked up so I could play the various games, I just like collecting sets of things.

A few.

I do some Warmachine/Hordes stuff that I bought solely to paint; I have no intention of playing the game. I may use them for other games, but not the one they were produced for.

Question for January 9th:

Go to your unpainted hoard, close your eyes, and pull out a mini. What is it? Is it something you forgot you had? Pics are optional, but always welcome. (If your treasure trove is like Russian dolls, storage box within storage box, keep going until you get to a mini.)

That would not work for me now.

I just went through my stuff and put everything on Ebay that I know I won't paint and sorted all else in boxes and such what I hope to paint one day.

Question for January 10th:

Staying warm while you sleep in winter/cold temperatures: use as many blankets as needed, or crank up the heat so it feels like a tropical island?

The girls use blankets and a Brutus...

I just wait till Brutus decides he can spare half an hour to keep me warm before returning to the girls.

I'm 56 almost 57...how dare you insinuate that I engage in childish behaviour!

*** Puts fingers in ears***

I can't hear you!!! Nana nana nanahhh!!!!

Okay, maybe sometimes...

Puts his hands over Brutus his ears, pretend that Brutus is a motorcycle and makes Vroom Vroom noises.

Somehow Brutus is used to this...

I have maybe played warhammer twice or three times in my whole life.

I game on the PC and only paint for fun and display.

In the past I bought a Warhammer Starter box or two and maybe a 40K and Warmaster box but that's it.

I rather buy single models I like and I'm very selective about that.

*** Backs Kickstarter with dozens of models***

***Downloads whole patreon sets of 3D models***

Nope..not even in purple...

By virtue of using on sale Infinity starter boxes to collect figures, quite a few.  Of course I wasn't actually planning to play most of them, just paint them.

I think that there are only a couple.  Most of the time I don't get the starter boxes or if I do, I actually play the game (like Mordheim and Adeptus Titanicus).  the only one that comes to mind a 1) Dark Heaven, Reaper's first wargame, and b) some sort of sci-fi game that I picked up second hand for the minis.  I have no problem buying a set without intending to play it.  Usually I just want the minis, or to read the rules.

Almost none...I have been in this hobby now for 50 years, and have seen the new hotness in gaming come and go so many times that I don’t get excited by new boxed set sorts of games.  They’ll be gone before I get around to painting them.  My vast hoard is built in the other direction, by period/genre, and what *I* end up accumulating are new rules that might be used with existing miniatures.  I think the most recent time I caved in and bought the new exciting thing was The Great Rail Wars box for Deadlands.  I did get all the figures painted, but never played.

That said, I did pick up an Age of Battles box last year at the flea market at Cincycon, since I got it for less than the two boxes of Zvezda figures would have cost at retail.  But it’s basically just raw material...like all of the boxes it’s stacked on, full of 1/72 scale scale medievals/fantasy/ancients.

The rules: as they were last month (in addition to all regular forum rules) except where I sneakily changed them:

      1. Every day, or so (unless I am out or ill or something) I will post a question. †
1.5. Should I be unable to post a question for the day, a crack team of deputy quisitors, former quisitors, and random forum members are all chomping at the bit to step in and post one... ††
      2. In theory there is a 24 hour span to answer that question before the next question is posted.
2.5. (Rule 2 is the most frequently ignored rule.)
      3. Questions are going to be posted sometime before 1 AM Reaper time (US Central).
      4. Everyone is encouraged to suggest future questions to be posted via PM to Talespinner or Morihalda…
      5. You do not have to answer every question to play...
      6. If a question is TMI or N/A simply wait for the next question.. ..or post that you decline to answer (clues regarding why can be fun...unless TMI).
      7. Weekend questions may take the form of two or three day quests, starting on Friday or Saturday.
      8. Pix always welcome.

The first question will need to be posted after a brief (10 minute) pause to foil the merging of posts.
The footnotes, because I can't resist doing †††footnotes:

      † I will aim for 0600 Reaper/Nottingham time.
††  If subs and backstops could wait until 11AM in Reaper/Denton's timezone to see if I remember.
      ††† …because I re-remembered how to do the dagger ( † ) symbol.
