Question for January 12th:

How many starter boxes/armies do you have for games you never got to play? Estimates are ok if you don't feel like digging through your hoard. Or do you just like painting and never actually intended to play a game?

I have an undefeated (never played) , painted & based Night Goblin Army or most of it meant for 6th Edition Warhammer.

7th Edition killed interest in the game at my local hobby store...War Machine became THE game.

None. Never got into war gaming. All my stuff is for role playing games, display or gifting.  Now if we're talking unplayed and unpainted board games with lots of miniatures then it's at least a few.

Ummmm, yes?

*settles in, starts pondering*

This could take a bit.

First minis I ever bought was a 2nd Ed 40K starter box, just to have figs to paint. Never even read the rules.

Bloodbowl, bought it for the rules, never played either starter factions.

WOTC Chainmail, bought main starter and all the faction boxes. Only ever played Drazen's Horde so the other 6 factions never got played....or painted....

AEGs Clan War, bought the starter and all the faction boxes, only ever played Lion and Shadowlands, so Crab, Crane, Drago, Phoenix, Scorpion, Yorimoto, Tutori's Army, Unicorn (Have a massive Unicorn army that never got assembled).
Might Armies I picked up the Orcs and Elves.  Never really did anything with them although my wife painted some Elves.

(FYI I do occasionally actually play an army, I played Drazen's Horde in Chainmail, I played Lion and Shadowlands in Clan War, I played Chaos Dwarves in Bloodbowl, I played Syntha in VOID, and Blackbloods in Chronopea)

Then I took a few years off from minis, until Kickstarter......

West Wind's Empire of the Dead, I went all in on that.  There were 11 or so faction sets.  Some are painted.  None have been played.

Robotech RPG Tactics.  I did play the Zentraedi a bit, never played the UEF.

War & Empire.  3 Kickstarters, 5 armies (I think).  I primed a few Romans.  Hope to get to it at some point.

Counterblast.  Bought 5 factions I think.  1 is painted.  1 is mostly painted.  None are played.

Mercs: Recon.  Have actually played 3 of the 4 starter factions (there are 2 starters with 2 factions) with 2 or three of those painted. Plus have played 1 of the 7+ expansion factions I have.

Infamy: The Big Smoke.  I think I probably got all 8 Kingpins (factions) from the Kickstarter.  Have never even assembled anything.  They are beautiful but complicated and delicate so I put them off. Rules never really came out and I think they are trying to reboot them again this year......

CAV:SO.  3 Kickstarters,  all the factions. Haven't played other than the demo game with just a Dictator.  Was working hard on getting some units painted when I got the new job and moved.  Then got distracted by SWL.  Will get back to it.

Heavy Gear.  3 Kickstarters, 5 starter factions.  Nothing assembled let alone painted.  But I did go visit them in Montreal one year and met the boss.....

Burrows & Badgers: Not really starter boxes, but have bought all the figs, multiples of the bunnies, have two versions of the rules.  Have a few figures painted.  Came close to playing once...

Polyversal.  5 factions armies from the KS.  Nothing assembled or painted.  Online rules have been out for a while, printed rules are still in progress.  Haven't managed to read the rules yet.

The World of SMOG: Rise of Moloch, have played the main box faction.  There are ...a number (I count 6 boxes I can see) of additional factions and alternates, which I haven't even take the shrink wrap off of.

A Song of Fire and Ice.  3 playable factions from the starter.  I've played Starks a couple of times before we moved.  Lannisters and Neutrals I haven't.  This hasn't been unboxed since the move.

Battletech.  I picked up the two new intro/starter boxes.  I went in on the Kickstarter so have a new big box of Clan and Inner stuff with a whole bunch more coming in Wave 2.  Have mostly painted one figure.  Would probably have learned to play and gotten some games in but 2020 happened.

Star Wars Armada.  Picked up the starter on sale as I'd watched a video of play when it first came out and thought the rules looked neat. Plus Star Destroyer.  Still in box as I'm focusing on Legion right now.

Star Wars Legion.  Just got the Clone Wars starter for Christmas.  Have a Droid army assembled but haven't had a chance to play it yet.  Clones are going in a box and won't get assembled until I "finish" painting my Imperials and Droids.  I have played Rebels but my wife usually does.
Infinity: Code Red.  Got it just as I was moving. I opened it but have done nothing since.

Infinity Defiance. Just had the main box from the Kickstarter arrive around Christmas.  I took a quick look at the main box (very nice production) but that's it so far.  Haven't even found a spot on a shelf for it yet. Wave two will have many more factions......

Yeesh.
I expect I may have forgotten one or two games in there, maybe.

This is hard to answer. Not because I have many starter boxes/armies, but because I bought them for other games.  The Old Glory US Cavalry designed for Civil War battles?  Wild West Soldiers.  Bootleg wars Gangsters?  Call of Cthulhu minis.  Dog of War, Bolt action etc.  Modern soldiers for Stargate SG-1 and other games.  Egyptian Jacal headed and Hawk headed minis, Jafa for SG-1.  Also all the Western minis like Black Water Gulch, Desperado and all others for my Western RPG.

I have a Tau Army. They are fully assembled.  Have not played 40k in over a decade.

Roughly a dozen? I have a Reptus army for Warlord (really hoping to play that one day, maybe at an RCon). About 3 starter boxes for Warmachine (the old metal ones), a two-player starter-box for Hordes (so technically 2 there), a starter-box for each of the original factions in Alkemy (4?), a 1st edition Malifaux starter faction, two Kings of War armies. I have a Trojan army for WarGods of Olympus, and the two-player A Song of Ice and Fire starter box. Oh and 2 or 3 armies for the Doom of Rackham, the pre-painted Confrontation: Age of Ragnarok. Absolutely none of them are fully painted (excluding Rackham), many are still in the box. And I've never played any of the games they are for.

I do have small armies for WH40k; never played them, but I've played a single introductory game with someone else's army. Probably going to try and sell them this year, because I'm never going to play them.

Nowadays if I buy a game, I make sure that I can double-duty the miniatures for something else, usually D&D.

I'm much more interested in building and painting the minis than I am in most games, so...

Starter Boxes

None - I've played all the starter boxes I've bought at least once.

Armies...

A couple? But again, I tend to collect minis more than armies. I might pick up a small army's worth of minis, but it's more about the painting.

Actually I can think of a couple, for Battlefleet Gothic. I've never gotten to play my orc or space marine fleets, I have only just begun to paint my tau, and I have a small eldar fleet that's still in the blisters.

Question for January 10th:

Staying warm while you sleep in winter/cold temperatures: use as many blankets as needed, or crank up the heat so it feels like a tropical island?

I will lower the heat, turn on a fan to add a bit of a breeze, and then pile on blankets.  I don't want to be cold, but I hate being overheated.

Question for January 11th:

They say to never lose your inner child. How frequently do you find yourself engaging in "childish" behavior (of the harmless variety)?

Probably pretty frequently.  Most of my childhood interests have stuck in some way or another.  Though those interests have definitely matured with me.  I still like playing games and playing with toys and making art.  But those things have evolved into TTRPGs.  I play video games with decent regularity.  I still play dress up but that now mostly comes out through shadowcasting the Rocky Horror Picture Show, or through the burlesque/variety shows I perform in.  I don't read comics nearly as often these days, but that's mostly because I never moved my collection out of my childhood home.  The things that brought me joy as a child still bring me joy as an adult, but I indulge in them in different ways.

Not too many.  Most of these kinds of things are a result of me pillaging another game for minis for D&D use.  The biggest offender is my Rum & Bones collection.  I have most of the sets they released for that game, many still in shrink wrap.  Though my fiance and I did start playing the game this year, we don't play with enough frequency to test out all of the factions and options.  I also have some random sets from other games that I have zero intentions to learn.  I have some stuff from Wrath of Kings as well as Age of Sigmar, that are destined to be pillaged.  There's some boxes and baggies full of cheapo minis from Magic the Gathering and Warhammer, that are very low on the to-be-painted list.  I also have a few sprues from Frostgrave and similar skirmish games that I ordered and then let collect dust when I realized how much smaller they were compared to the rest of my collection.

Miniature wise, currently it would be my CAV miniatures. I haven't even cracked open the rule book.

In my defense, I haven't been with a regular group of roleplayers or wargamers in years. My current location is a pretty dead zone for gaming and hobbying with people.

In the back of my mind, I'm still someone who paints for gaming purposes over display purposes, and my choices in miniatures generally reflects that (typical fantasy).

Yes

I was a pure painter, so I never bought armies, though I have a few starter boxes of good sculpts like Infinity and Hell Dorado. When I got into a few board games (Zombicide, Massive Darkness, KDM), I realized I'd have to paint really fast and sacrifice quality to get them all painted up. That bummed me out, I've tried to do speed painting but it's not fun and I hate the quality. I've tried a few times since I stopped painting minis, even, because now I do play a solo game here and there, and the unpainted minis suck (I end up proxying in my display painted minis hah).

just one a box of star wars legion i think.  It was kinda of gift and i still feel guilty about not assembling much less painting it.

I haven't done any wargaming since college, and even then I mostly used someone elses spare team . - blood bowl, necromunda, space hulk..

If it's Imperials/Rebels you should at least put them together, they are 2-3 pieces each mostly (ok the speeder bikes and AT-RT are a bit more). Everyone needs a few Stormtroopers hanging around to play with at least. ::D:

If it is the Clone Wars starter, well, you should just send that to me ;)

I feel like this deserves a topic of its own.  With Reaper not doing starter sets for games, at least recently, at least talking people out of buying more is mostly Reaper-neutral.

(The part about what possesses one to buy a new starter, that is ... )

The rules: as they were last month (in addition to all regular forum rules) except where I sneakily changed them:

      1. Every day, or so (unless I am out or ill or something) I will post a question. †
1.5. Should I be unable to post a question for the day, a crack team of deputy quisitors, former quisitors, and random forum members are all chomping at the bit to step in and post one... ††
      2. In theory there is a 24 hour span to answer that question before the next question is posted.
2.5. (Rule 2 is the most frequently ignored rule.)
      3. Questions are going to be posted sometime before 1 AM Reaper time (US Central).
      4. Everyone is encouraged to suggest future questions to be posted via PM to Talespinner or Morihalda…
      5. You do not have to answer every question to play...
      6. If a question is TMI or N/A simply wait for the next question.. ..or post that you decline to answer (clues regarding why can be fun...unless TMI).
      7. Weekend questions may take the form of two or three day quests, starting on Friday or Saturday.
      8. Pix always welcome.

The first question will need to be posted after a brief (10 minute) pause to foil the merging of posts.
The footnotes, because I can't resist doing †††footnotes:

      † I will aim for 0600 Reaper/Nottingham time.
††  If subs and backstops could wait until 11AM in Reaper/Denton's timezone to see if I remember.
      ††† …because I re-remembered how to do the dagger ( † ) symbol.
