Getting to Know You January 2021!

On a family trip to Washington D.C. way back when (probably '85 or '86) everyone got real carsick from my dad's driving. REAL carsick. My dad is the kind of person who bobs and weaves instead of patiently waiting, so it's no surprise. Apparently we had just pulled in somewhere in the D.C. area at a rest stop, and everyone is racing for the bathroom to vomit. My two brothers and one of my sisters raced over a hill to puke, my nauseated oldest sister is getting me out of the car seat and I don't even make it outside before I'm boaking all over the floor of the van.

That may have also been the same trip that I puked all over the same sister a mile from home, not sure... gee, I wonder why we stopped taking family trips...

I only have vague memories of a similar event. Late 70s-early 80s.

Easter Sunday, we kids ate too much chocolate, then a two hour drive to see the relatives. First my baby sister got car sick, then the chain reaction in the back seat while dressed in our Sunday best. And it was still winter weather.

Did I mention it was a new car barely a week old?

So yeah... memories.

If you have the misfortune to end up at my house right now, you can cook for yourself. And while you’re at it, clean up the kitchen and take out the trash.

Swears.

Does getting married count?

Question for January 25th:

What’s the funniest (or most memorable) thing that happened on your family vacation (or a vacation just for yourself)?

Senior year, spring break, my friend (also named Heather) and I went to San Francisco. My first trip without my family and we had so much fun.

The mimosa breakfast was hilarious..  it involved way too many beverages. I think we had 6 glasses/cups and one tiny plate each. The waiter asked us if we would like more 'jews'... and well... I seriously hope we tipped the poor man well.

That same day (I think) we also visited Alcatraz. We got the walking tour recording and the proceeded to walk the tour in the wrong direction... we learned a lot, out of context. The last ferry was at four (If I remember correctly...) and when they blew the whistle to embark, we were on the other side of the island. We ran like two musician nerds with the same name have never run before. I actually had to jump a little gap as they were pulling away when we arrived. And that was the night I almost spent on Alcatraz.

Have you ever done something crazy/completely outside your comfort zone to impress someone you were attracted to?

Well, I could have chosen to call my 4'6" tall friend on her threat, but instead of dealing with a massively annoyed short chef who doesn't tolerate stupidity in her kitchen....  I decided not to risk her driving the seven hours up here so she could deck me with a cast iron frying pan for being too shy to - at the time - make a move on the one that's now my husband.

That counts right?  Oh yeah, I forgot to mention, she had a habit of flooring anyone stupid enough to try and test her authority in the kitchen too.

No, I am Sean Connery in a Zardoz mankini levels of handsome and therefore automatically attract potential suitors.

In reality though I have not done anything outside of my comfort zone, which is a pretty wide zone to begin with, to impress anyone. In fact I have a really hard time deciphering interpersonal relationships at that level so I never even tried. Thankfully a few people over the years have decided I was worth an attempt to get to know better so I haven't gone relationship-less. One of them, now my partner of 26 year or so, even decided I was worth holding onto. She tells me that people still try and flirt with me, but I'll be damned if I can tell.

Like the typical introvert, talking to them was a huge uncharacteristic step.

I think I seemed mostly human.

Like several others, talking to them was the biggest step outside my comfort zone.

No. After a few early disasters in the relationship game, I became somewhat shy around girls. I could be friends with them all day long, but it was never gonna go past that unless they started it.

Thankfully, my wife saw something she liked, so she invited herself into my life, and we've been married for 20 years now.

I did four 7 day challenges. Seems to have done the trick.

The rules: as they were last month (in addition to all regular forum rules) except where I sneakily changed them:

      1. Every day, or so (unless I am out or ill or something) I will post a question. †
1.5. Should I be unable to post a question for the day, a crack team of deputy quisitors, former quisitors, and random forum members are all chomping at the bit to step in and post one... ††
      2. In theory there is a 24 hour span to answer that question before the next question is posted.
2.5. (Rule 2 is the most frequently ignored rule.)
      3. Questions are going to be posted sometime before 1 AM Reaper time (US Central).
      4. Everyone is encouraged to suggest future questions to be posted via PM to Talespinner or Morihalda…
      5. You do not have to answer every question to play...
      6. If a question is TMI or N/A simply wait for the next question.. ..or post that you decline to answer (clues regarding why can be fun...unless TMI).
      7. Weekend questions may take the form of two or three day quests, starting on Friday or Saturday.
      8. Pix always welcome.

The first question will need to be posted after a brief (10 minute) pause to foil the merging of posts.
The footnotes, because I can't resist doing †††footnotes:

      † I will aim for 0600 Reaper/Nottingham time.
††  If subs and backstops could wait until 11AM in Reaper/Denton's timezone to see if I remember.
      ††† …because I re-remembered how to do the dagger ( † ) symbol.
